When the dispute over taxation of proprietary estates led the Assembly to send him to England, Franklin make a new will, arranged for supervision of the colonial postal system during his absence, tended to much personal business, yet found time to correspond with friends on such topics as the nature of heat and cold. On the voyage to England he wrote what is generally known as "The Way to Wealth," his most widely reprinted single composition.

These letters called "for suppressive measures" and advised "action detrimental to the colonies." Benjamin Franklin came before the privy council in London, on behalf of the House of Representatives, to petition for the removal of Hutchinson and Oliver from office. This account includes a description of the event from Bancroft's History of the United States , and the text of the letters and speeches relating to the event. It was originally published in Philadelphia in 1860.
