Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1771 and 1790, American Founding Father Benjamin Franklin sat down to record the important events of his life, from his childhood in Boston to his work as a printer in Philadelphia, to his trips to Paris and his plans for the first public library. The story of the invention of the Franklin stove, the first Poor Richard's Almanac, and his experiments with electricity are all included here. His "Project for Moral Perfection"—a list of desirable virtues and steps to achieve them—influenced the modern self-help genre. Hundreds of years later, Franklin's account of his rise from middle-class obscurity to become a world-renowned scholar and civic figure continues to promote the American Dream. First published in 1791, this unabridged version of Franklin's autobiography is taken from the 1909 copyright edition.

This book was released on 2016-07-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Benjamin Franklin should be of importance to every American, primarily because of the part he played in securing the independence of the United States and in establishing it as a nation. Franklin shares with Washington the honors of the Revolution, and of the events leading to the birth of the new nation. While Washington was the animating spirit of the struggle in the colonies, Franklin was its ablest champion abroad. To Franklin's cogent reasoning and keen satire, we owe the clear and forcible presentation of the American case in England and France; while to his personality and diplomacy as well as to his facile pen, we are indebted for the foreign alliance and the funds without which Washington's work must have failed. His patience, fortitude, and practical wisdom, coupled with self-sacrificing devotion to the cause of his country, are hardly less noticeable than similar qualities displayed by Washington. In fact, Franklin as a public man was much like Washington, especially in the entire disinterestedness of his public service. Franklin is also interesting to us because by his life and teachings he has done more than any other American to advance the material prosperity of his countrymen. It is said that his widely and faithfully read maxims made Philadelphia and Pennsylvania wealthy, while Poor Richard's pithy sayings, translated into many languages, have had a world-wide influence. Franklin is a good type of our American manhood. Although not the wealthiest or the most powerful, he is undoubtedly, in the versatility of his genius and achievements, the greatest of our self-made men. The simple yet graphic story in the Autobiography of his steady rise from humble boyhood in a tallow-chandler shop, by industry, economy, and perseverance in self-improvement, to eminence, is the most remarkable of all the remarkable histories of our self-made men. It is in itself a wonderful illustration of the results possible to be attained in a land of unequaled opportunity by following Franklin's maxims.

This book was released on 2016-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" the life story of one of the most important figures in American history is recounted. Franklin was more than just a founding father of the country; he was also a prolific writer, tradesman, scientist, diplomat, and philosopher. His autobiography tells the story of his life from childhood through the year 1757 where it ends uncompleted. The work begins by detailing many of the personal aspects of his childhood including his contentious relationship with his brother James, from whom he would learn the printing business as an apprentice. A falling out with his brother would lead to him setting out on his own as a printer, where he ultimately would find great financial success in publishing the "Philadelphia Gazette" and "Poor Richard's Almanac." Largely absent from the work is much discussion regarding his role in the American Revolution and the founding of the United States. Readers will find instead more of a focus on his own personal life and exposition of his moral philosophy. There may be no greater figure in American history than Benjamin Franklin and here the reader will delight in an intimate portrait of the man in his own words. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes an introduction by Henry Ketcham.
