Download or read book Now and Then We Time Travel written by Fraser A. Sherman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 400 films and 150 television series have featured time travel--stories of rewriting history, lovers separated by centuries, journeys to the past or the (often dystopian) future. This book examines some of the roles time travel plays on screen in science fiction and fantasy. Plot synopses and credits are listed for films and TV series from England, Canada, the UK and Japan, as well as for TV and films from elsewhere in the world. Tropes and plot elements are highlighted. The author discusses philosophical questions about time travel, such as the logic of timelines, causality (what's to keep time-travelers from jumping back and correcting every mistake?) and morality (if you correct a mistake, are you still guilty of it?).
Download or read book Uncanny Histories in Film and Media written by Patrice Petro and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncanny Histories in Film and Media brings together a stellar lineup of established and emergent scholars who explore the uncanny twists and turns that are often occluded in larger accounts of film and media. Prompted by fresh archival research and new conceptual approaches, the works included here probe the uncanny as a mode of historical analysis that reveals surprising connections and unsettling continuities. The uncanny stands for what often eludes us, for what remains unfamiliar or mysterious or strange. Whether writing about film movements, individual works, or the legacies of major or forgotten critics and theorists, the contributors remind us that at the heart of the uncanny, and indeed the writing of history, is a troubling of definitions, a challenge to our inherited narratives, and a disturbance of what was once familiar in the uncanny histories of our field.

Download or read book And the Garden Is You written by Michael Taussig and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-08-26 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new collection of essays reflecting on the centrality of writing anthropological practice from one of the discipline’s most influential thinkers. Michael Taussig’s work is known for its critical insights and bold, experimental style. In the eleven essays in this new collection, Taussig reflects on the act of writing itself, demonstrating its importance for anthropological practice and calling for the discipline to keep experiential knowledge from being extinguished as fieldnotes become scholarship. Setting out to show how this can be done, And the Garden Is You exemplifies a form of exploratory writing that preserves the spontaneity of notes scribbled down in haste. In these essays, the author’s reflections take us from his childhood in Sydney to trips to Afghanistan, Colombia, Finland, Italy, Turkey, and Syria. Along the way, Taussig explores themes of fabulation and provocation that are central to his life’s work, in addition to the thinkers dearest to him—Bataille, Benjamin, Burroughs, and Nietzsche, among others. This collection is vintage Taussig, bound to interest longtime readers and newcomers alike.

Download or read book Time Travelers written by Adelene Buckland and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorians, perhaps more than any Britons before them, were diggers and sifters of the past. Though they were not the first to be fascinated by history, the intensity and range of their preoccupations with the past were unprecedented and of lasting importance. The Victorians paved the way for our modern disciplines, discovered the primeval monsters we now call the dinosaurs, and built many of Britain’s most important national museums and galleries. To a large degree, they created the perceptual frameworks through which we continue to understand the past. Out of their discoveries, new histories emerged, giving rise to fresh debates, while seemingly well-known histories were thrown into confusion by novel tools and methods of scrutiny. If in the eighteenth century the study of the past had been the province of a handful of elites, new technologies and economic development in the nineteenth century meant that the past, in all its brilliant detail, was for the first time the property of the many, not the few. Time Travelers is a book about the myriad ways in which Victorians approached the past, offering a vivid picture of the Victorian world and its historical obsessions.

Download or read book Orange Cat written by Danielle Lyon and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toys go missing, of course, in a house with six children. It’s as natural as apple pie and ice-cream. It’s a different matter when they start appearing. When beautiful old toy soldiers—just like the ones in the antique shop down the road—start popping up on Mary Frances’ bedroom window-sill, her search for clues to the curious figures leads her to a wider mystery. Things aren’t where they should be. Or, perhaps, they aren’t when they should be. Either way, Mary Frances and her sister Annie are going to need all the help they can get to solve the mystery. That help comes to them unexpectedly in the form of Thunderpaws, a mysterious orange cat with remarkable abilities. With Thunderpaws guiding them, Mary Frances and Annie learn to slip into the space between the lightning and the thunder and emerge into a place that looks a lot like home. Here, too, there are things going missing and other things appearing that don’t belong, and a wandering man who might hold the key to the whole affair. The girls meet young boys Evan and Johnathan (who live in a suspiciously familiar-looking farmhouse), and the four children must band together with an elusive group of time-travelling orange cats to put everything back when it belongs.
Download or read book The Tourist as a Metaphor of the Social World written by Graham Dann and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of papers from the prestigious Research Committee on International Tourism presented at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association, Brisbane, Australia, July 2002. It provides a sociological and anthropological critique of existing tourism theory as well as some directions for its future development and research. While much of the present understanding of the tourist and tourism is grounded in metaphor (e.g. tourism as a sacred journey, tourism as play, the tourist as a child, etc.) such analogies need to be linked to transformations in tourism generating and receiving societies. Hence the focus on the tourist and everyday life, socio-psychological dimensions of the tourist experience, the tourist and conflicting expectations, and the tourist in a changing world.
Download or read book Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way written by Bruce Campbell and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What you're reading right now is known as the "cover copy," or “flap copy.” This is where the 84,951 words of my latest book are cooked down to 350 words or less to capture your imagination/download. I pondered how to do that. Should I cut to the chase and reveal pivotal plot points like the one at the end of the book where the little girl on crutches points an accusing finger and shouts, "the killer is Mr. Porter"? No. I have too much respect for you as an intelligent consumer to attempt such an obvious ruse. But let's not play games here. You clicked your way to this page, so you either: A. Know who I am. B. Like the cool smoking jacket I'm wearing on the cover. Or: C. Thought this was a secret link to Ashley Madison. Is it a sequel to my autobiography If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor? Sadly, no, which made it much harder to write. Is it an "autobiographical novel"? Yes. I am the lead character in the story (coincidentally an actor), and I am a real person, and everything in the book actually happened - except for the stuff that didn't. The action revolves around my preparations for a pivotal role in the A-list relationship film, Let's Make Love! My Homeric attempt to break through the glass ceiling of B-grade genre fair is hampered by a vengeful studio executive and a production that becomes infected by something called the "B-movie virus" - symptoms of which include excessive use of cheesy special effects, slapstick, and projectile vomiting. From a violent fistfight with a Buddhist to a life-altering stint in federal prison, this novel has it all. And if the 84,951 words are too time-consuming, there are lots and lots of cool graphics – all of which have been upgraded to vibrant color since the first publication. I hope you enjoy the book – and if you learn anything at all about making love, please share it with me! Regards, Bruce "Go Ahead and Call Me Ash" Campbell
