Download or read book Benedict s Treatise Vol 1 of 2 written by Joseph Benedict and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Benedict's Treatise, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing a Summary of the Jurisdiction, Powers and Duties; Justices of the Peace in the State of New York, Adapted to the Code of Procedure in Civil Cases; Also, a Practical Treatise on Their Jurisdiction, Duties and Authority in Criminal Cases; Togethe IT is now twelve years since the Fourth Edition of my Treatise was issued, and I am grateful to be able to state that it has been received with favor by those who have had occasion to use it in the line of their business and profession. Since that time, however, many important changes have been made in the law governing Justices' Courts, and the various special proceedings within their jurisdiction. I have inserted in this edition much new matter, such as amendments made by the Legislature, and have cited authorities made by the various Courts, in order to give those doing business in Justices' Courts and within their jurisdiction, the benefit of the law governing these Courts, and defining their powers. When we consider that the greater portion of the litiga tion in our country is settled by and before these Courts, no one will, for a moment, hesitate in saying that the latest alterations of the statutes, and the latest decisions of the appellate Courts, should be placed before them; and more especially when we realize that among the greater number of these Justices of the Peace, but very few, comparatively, have access to the Law Libraries of our country. Book excerpt: Born in Amsterdam in 1634, Benedict Spinoza continues to be one of the most admired thinkers. His work, including the Ethics, the Tractatus Theologico Politicus and the Political Treatise that we present in this volume are widely read and the subject of philosophical, political, religious and psychological studies, not only by fellow philosophers but also by writers and poets. Famous writers and poets became admirers and followers of Spinoza, particularly Lessing, Heine, Auerbach, Coleridge, Shelley, George Eliot and many more. Robert Harvey Monro Elwes a renowned XIX century English scholar and the English translator of Spinoza's works, in his Introduction to the Tractatus Theologico Politicus (included in this book) wrote that these poets and intellectuals "not only admired him but studied him deeply. Shelley not only contemplated but began a translation of the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, to be published with a preface by Lord Byron, but the project was cut short by his death." "to be a philosopher one must first be a Spinozist.." G. W. F. Hegel "I, at last, chanced upon the Ethica of this man. To say exactly how much I gained from that work was due to Spinoza or to my reading of him would be impossible; enough that I found in him a sedative for my passions and that he appeared to me to open up a large and free outlook on the material and moral world." Johann Wolfgang von Goethe "Spinoza, like Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, on whose lives and philosophy I have based two earlier novels, wrote much that is highly relevant to my field of psychiatry and psychotherapy--for example, that ideas, thoughts, and feelings are caused by previous experiences, that passions may be studied dispassionately, that understanding leads to transcendence--and I wished to celebrate his contributions through a novel of ideas." Irvin D. Yalom, from his novel The Spinoza Problem

Book Benedict XVI A Life Volume One

Download or read book Benedict XVI A Life Volume One written by Peter Seewald and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By any reckoning, the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI was extraordinary, with moments of high drama. Not the least of these was his resignation from office in February 2013, the first papal resignation in 500 years. But who is Joseph Ratzinger? In this definitive biography, based on meticulous historical research and many hours of taped interviews with his subject, Peter Seewald shows the exceptional circumstances in which the exceptionally talented son of a Bavarian policeman became the first German pope for 950 years. In this first volume, covering the years 1927–1965, we witness Joseph Ratzinger's early days, living above his father's police station. Ratzinger came to adulthood through the years of National Socialism. Though hostile to the rise of Hitler, his family knew well about Dachau and Ratzinger himself was conscripted into the Hitler Youth. Joseph Ratzinger proved to be a man of exceptional intellectual gifts and by the time of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) he was already noted as one of the outstanding intellects present and was nominated a 'peritus' or theological expert. This was also the time of the start of his friendship with the Swiss theologian Hans Küng who was to become his nemesis. Of his predecessor, Pope Francis has said: 'Pope Benedict was a great Pope, great for the penetration of his intelligence, great for his important contribution to theology, great for his love of the Church and human beings, great for his virtues and faith'. Even in this first volume, we begin to understand how this came to be true.

Book Treating the Body in Medicine and Religion

Download or read book Treating the Body in Medicine and Religion written by John J. Fitzgerald and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern medicine has produced many wonderful technological breakthroughs that have extended the limits of the frail human body. However, much of the focus of this medical research has been on the physical, often reducing the human being to a biological machine to be examined, understood, and controlled. This book begins by asking whether the modern medical milieu has overly objectified the body, unwittingly or not, and whether current studies in bioethics are up to the task of restoring a fuller understanding of the human person. In response, various authors here suggest that a more theological/religious approach would be helpful, or perhaps even necessary. Presenting specific perspectives from Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the book is divided into three parts: "Understanding the Body," "Respecting the Body," and "The Body at the End of Life." A panel of expert contributors—including philosophers, physicians, and theologians and scholars of religion— answer key questions such as: What is the relationship between body and soul? What are our obligations toward human bodies? How should medicine respond to suffering and death? The resulting text is an interdisciplinary treatise on how medicine can best function in our societies. Offering a new way to approach the medical humanities, this book will be of keen interest to any scholars with an interest in contemporary religious perspectives on medicine and the body.

First, that those things written con cerning Job are a true history, and not a ficti tious argument for exhortation or doctrine, as in comedies and tragedies, as the Anabaptists and some Jews of old have said, for feigned examples do not seriously affect us; neither if the history had been a fiction would the Lord have joined him with the other two in Ezek. The art historian Kenneth Clark called it 'the keystone of European art', and for a century after its creation it was regarded as nothing less than a miraculous image. And yet there is a very human story behind this artistic 'miracle'. Ross King's Leonardo and the Last Supper is both a 'biography' of one of the most famous works of art ever painted and a record of Leonardo da Vinci's last five years in Milan.
