I wish I had written the book." ?Capt. Edward L. Beach, USN (Ret.) author of Run Silent, Run Deep "Peter Padfield is the best British naval historian of his generation now working. [His] book...will now become the standard work on the subject." ?Daily Telegraph (London) "Peter Padfield has produced by far the best and most complete critical history of the submarine operations of all the combatants in the Second World War, at the same time providing vivid narrative accounts of particular actions and events." ?Lloyd?s List (London) "An excellent account of submarine warfare in 1939?45... [it] recreates the tribulations and horrors of that especially brutal form of warfare within a sturdily analytical and often critical framework." ?The Economist "[A] marvelously complete and detailed study of World War II submarine warfare...an interesting, serious, and timely book." ?Houston Chronicle "A brilliant submarine warfare study." ?Military Review
Download or read book Currents Beneath the Sea written by Frank Nacozy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tale is about three men, whose lives have paralleled and intertined over the decades from childhood to manhood to past middle age. They had been fighters. All of them had had a penchant for violence and had chased the glory and high voltage of the boxing ring. They had challenged themselves to their very limits and perhaps beyond. It is the chronicle of three boys growing uprough and lustful, accumulating the physical and psychic scars of their rather reckless actions both in and out of the ring. The powerful, main women in the book are the romantic essence of the narrative. Without their erotic entanglements, the entire tale would have missed an important dimension of fun and sensuality. Each of the main charaters ultimately searchs out the sea in an attempt to escape the disappointments of ordinary life, by challenging their souls over the existential battlefields of their own choosing.

Download or read book The Lithosphere Beneath the Indian Shield written by Ashoka G. Dessai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the geotectonic evolution of the lithosphere beneath the Indian Shield, which comprises a collage of cratons variously bounded by mobile belts and palaeo-rifts. The lithosphere beneath these is fairly thin compared to other cratons worldwide, petrologically varied and shows considerable variation in thickness with depth both intra-craton and among cratons. Moreover, it has been subjected to the influence of repeated magmatic episodes from Proterozoic to Palaeocene, which have variously impacted different parts of the shield. The thermotectonic influence on constituent cratons is variable depending on the evolutionary history. This book discusses the impact of successive tectonomagmatic events on the evolution of the deep crust and shallow mantle, and their Phanerozoic modification as gleaned through the xenolith window. The book provides a petrotectonic perspective on the deep crust and shallow mantle from direct samples brought up as xenoliths of deep lithologies, and offers a comprehensive overview for students, researchers, academics and professionals, integrating the results of petrological studies of deep lithologies and geophysical investigations to (i) shed light on the physico-chemical and thermal structure of the lithosphere from an array of geotectonic settings and (ii) gain insights into the spatio-temporal evolution of the Indian Shield. An in-depth guide critical thinking on the complex issue of mantle differentiation, magmatism, lithosphere modification and crustal growth over time, the book allows readers to gain a better understanding of the processes that affect the lithosphere and shape the crust on which we live.

Download or read book Exploration and Science written by Michael Sean Reidy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-12-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume explores the intricate, mutually dependent relationship between science and exploration—how each has repeatedly built on the discoveries of the other and, in the process, opened new frontiers. A simple question: Which came first, advances in navigation or successful voyages of discovery? A complicated answer: Both and neither. For more than four centuries, scientists and explorers have worked together—sometimes intentionally and sometimes not—in an ongoing, symbiotic partnership. When early explorers brought back exotic flora and fauna from newly discovered lands, scientists were able to challenge ancient authorities for the first time. As a result, scientists not only invented new navigational tools to encourage exploration, but also created a new approach to studying nature, in which observations were more important than reason and authority. The story of the relationship between science and exploration, analyzed here for the first time, is nothing less than the history of modern science and the expanding human universe.
