Book Beneath the Broom Tree

Download or read book Beneath the Broom Tree written by Jill Penrod and published by Jill Penrod. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Ninian’s Sanctuary is a spiritual retreat center on a mysterious island so far south it’s nearly in Antarctica. At this center guests find healing, hope, and renewal, or so says its website. Ione Stavros needs it to be true, because she needs healed. Memories of horror haunt her, and she’s desperate to hear God again and regain her life. Soon after she arrives she meets Callen McGill, who is clearly as haunted as she is. Through an unspoken agreement, they don’t share their pain, but they share adventures, sometimes dangerous adventures, digging more deeply into the island’s secrets. God begins to knit Ione’s wounds, but Callen falls farther into darkness, and he doesn’t understand why God won’t heal him. If God is dealing with them together—and it seems that’s what He means to do—surely He will heal both of them. At least Callen hopes so, because this isn’t simply about healing their spirits. It’s also about rebuilding their lives, and Callen needs a job, a home, and mostly a way to keep Ione in his everyday life, whatever that will look like. It isn’t until God puts everything in Callen’s life to the test that he realizes God’s paths might lead to places he never expected to go. Small-town Christian contemporary romance with an island twist.

Book Under the Broom Tree

Download or read book Under the Broom Tree written by B. E. Mathews and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nurturing of a devoted parent, the kindness of a closest friend, and the loving heart of an often-misunderstood Father...all were the things Elijah, the greatest prophet of the Old Testament, found in his weakest moment when lying under a broom tree. Though he'd performed extraordinary miracles and offered faith-filled prayers, anxiety and depression drove him to a place where he asked God to end his life. Elijah's story was much like our own because he was an ordinary person, just like you and me. Discover God's extraordinary, sustaining love that is specifically for you. Find the answer to what is at the core of today's identity issues. Conquer difficulty in forgiving others. Learn to love the way God uniquely made you, flaws and all. Written by a board-certified pediatrician with almost 20 years of clinical experience, Under The Broom Tree explores the mental health epidemic of this generation with fearless faith, openhearted honesty, and refreshing transparency. Endorsement: B.E. Mathews deftly spins a wonderful and thought-provoking brief story that bridges the Old Testament with the modern day world, showing once again that the Bible and God's teachings transcend time and societal values. Under the Broom Tree will have you re-examine your faith and everything you thought to be true with insightful and delicious recountings of a woman coming to age in a culture that misplaces its values of what true beauty are. ─Julia Mathew, MSN About the Author: Dr. Beena Wilkins, who writes under the pen name B. E. Mathews, is a graduate of The University of Texas Medical Branch and completed her pediatric residency training at The University of California at Irvine. She is a board-certified pediatrician with almost two decades of dedication to the well-being of children and adolescents. In her debut book, Under The Broom Tree, she offers a fresh perspective regarding current mental health issues and shares her own soul-searching story about growing up in a hushed, closed-off Indian culture. She uses the life of Elijah, the greatest prophet of the Old Testament, as a powerful example of the common, fallible humanity in all of us. She is a Texas girl at heart, but currently resides in Florida with her husband and sons.

Book excerpt: Poems that explore the wilderness in order to find rest and divine providence. In the story of the prophet Elijah, he must flee his home, and, after an arduous journey, he arrives under a broom tree, where he prays for his own death. But in his sleep, he is touched by an angel who provides food and water. In this moment, the broom tree becomes a symbol for shelter in a barren landscape, a portent of hope and renewal. Drawing inspiration from this tale, Natalie Homer's debut poetry collection is a trek through the wildernesses of the heart and of the natural world. Exploring the idea of divine providence, Homer finds seams of light opening between forlorn moments and locates, "Something to run a finger through, / something to shine in the ocher light." Within these narrow spaces, Homer explores themes of longing, home, family, and self-worth amidst the wondrous backdrop of the American West and the Rust Belt, while integrating a rich mythology of narrative, image, and association. The broom tree, offering the capacity for shade and respite, becomes a source of connection and an inspiration for the collection. It is an invitation to sink deep into the earth and self and feel the roots entwine.

Book excerpt: They thought healing was impossible... Haunted by grisly scenes from her past, journalist Ione Stavros needs to heal and recharge. According to its website, the mysterious St. Ninian's Sanctuary is a perfect place to do that. On an island so far south it's nearly in Antarctica, the retreat center promises quiet opportunities to meet with God and find refreshment. She prays that's true, because this is her last hope. Callen came to the island to escape a fatal failure that won't leave him alone. Working the island farm and hiding in a cabin alone, he prays God will let him stop hearing, even for a moment, screams from the past, back in his former life as a paramedic working Rocky Mountain search and rescue. He never expects God to begin that healing by placing a woman in his path who might be more broken than he is. He can't bear to carry her pain along with his own, but every time he turns around, there she is. Together they listen for God's voice, explore the mysteries of the island, and try to make sense of hurts in their lives. As Ione moves forward, Callen steps back, and even the fragile healing they experience is put to the test. It isn't until danger threatens the entire island that they begin to understand God's plans for them--apart and together--as well as plans for the island they've grown to love. Beneath the Broom Tree is book one in the St. Ninian's Sanctuary series, contemporary Christian small-town romance with a mysterious island twist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angels have fascinated people for millennia because they point to an invisible dimension that parallels our own. This book examines the different ways that angels have been portrayed at certain key points in biblical and theological history. By tracing patterns in the appearance of higher-order beings from their ancient Near Eastern origins, the Hebrew Scriptures, the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius, Thomas Aquinas, Karl Barth, and even modern New Age writers, Angelology demonstrates that angels allow various authors to emphasise divine transcendence, immanence, and creativity. Identifying the theological purpose underlying the depiction of angels at certain key points in the history of their use raises new questions about how angels are to be understood by people today.

Book excerpt: When we think about Elijah, most often we think of a man who walked closely with God, who was bold, and who did miracles in His name - all of which was true! But Elijah was also a man who struggled like we do with fear, doubt, and even depression. He is an ancient example of a still-existing truth: it is not we who are strong, but God Almighty who works in and through us! We must be fully reliant on our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, as we face each day and its difficulties. In this book we will study the life of Elijah, and how God's faithfulness to him in the circumstances of his life brought him out from under the broom tree of despair. If God did this for him, surely God can do the same for you and I!

Book From Contemplation to Action

Download or read book From Contemplation to Action written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemplation is a spiritual process involving long, thoughtful, steady, serious, and attentive consideration or observation in order to achieve closer unity with God and to discover and understand God's will for the contemplative. Contemplation gives rise to activity, and activity, in turn, gives rise to more contemplation. The result of contemplation is often called discernment, seeing clearly what is at first not very clear or obvious, understanding what is not immediately obvious, resulting in accuracy of spiritual perception. Divine discernment is contemplation in action; it results in insight, inspiration, and an awareness of inner truth upon which one must act. While there are countless models of contemplation leading to action, the ninth-century BCE prophets Elijah and Elisha are the examples used in this book. Both are seers, messengers, and heralds of the LORD. They appear in activity when they are needed, and they disappear into solitude and silence when they are not.
