If you like stories that attempt to educate, encourage, inspire, enlighten, and motivate, as well as entertain, and ... (in the Epilogue,) end happily ever-after, this one is for you. Happy Trails! Dare to dream... ...Your future is bright... ...And so it shall be! - Dr. DeLight Prologue to The Magic Bottle by Dr. DeLight Too Close To The Edge After a long day driving straight through from Ohio, Ben Aiah and his second wife Janelle were now spending their first night of a week-long stay at a hotel right on the beach at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. For the previous 9 1/2 months Janelle had taught an intermediate elementary class in the Ohio public school system and was looking forward to some relaxation and fun on the vacation that was now beginning. Ben on the other hand had been keeping a deep dark secret. Bens life, outside of the time he spent with Janelle, had not been going so well. Ben considered himself a failure both personally and professionally and he had been planning for months now to make this trip to the ocean his last one, one from which he would not return. Since his return from a South East Asian Air Base in the early 70s when he got out of the service, Ben had a very difficult time making civilian life work. After spending over 18 months of craziness on and off-duty in the Orient during the Viet Nam War, Ben found coming back to a peacetime U. S. A. both dull and boring. He had a difficult time trying to be the Saturday Evening Post kind of husband and father his first wife and children (three daughters,) deserved. He was really a mess in a civilized environment. After a few years he had his first and most devastating nervous breakdown. Struggling to recover from that was the most difficult challenge he ever faced or ever wanted to. For a long time it was an everyday battle just to keep his head above water. For a long time he cried every morning when he woke up, losing the peace and escape of sleep, knowing that he would have to face another day of spiritual mountain climbing, and trying to keep from drowning in a whirlpool, all rolled into one. After a few years, things got better but they still werent good. Bens personal problems and struggles to recover had taken their toll and were continuing to take their toll on his marriage. Consequently his childhood sweetheart divorced him and he was separated from his children. Heartbreak and another mental breakdown ensued...

Book excerpt: “Captures the culture and poverty on reservations still suffering from greed and mismanagement . . . A ripped-from-the-headlines story with a shocking ending.” —Kirkus Reviews Now that journalist Lola Wicks finally decided to settle down and marry small-town sheriff Charlie Laurendeau, she’s long overdue to meet her in-laws. But shortly after arriving at the Arizona Navajo reservation where they live, an eco-terrorist attack leaves a tribal elder dead, escalating the controversy surrounding the new coal mine on the reservation. Lola’s reporter instincts kick in and soon she’s pursuing the story, which doesn’t exactly ingratiate her with Charlie’s parents. But as the violence escalates, Lola begins to wonder if her husband’s family is somehow involved—a suspicion that could cost her not only her marriage—but her life. “Compelling, realistically flawed characters and a timely story line . . . make this one of Florio’s hardest-hitting mysteries yet.” —Library Journal, starred review Praise for the Lola Wicks mysteries “A gutsy series.” —The New York Times “Outstanding . . . Believable action complements razor-sharp observations of people and scenery.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review on Montana “Gwen Florio weaves a compelling tapestry that combines family saga, social consciousness and human frailty.” —Craig Johnson, New York Times–bestselling author on Disgraced “The writing is top-notch, and the action builds at just the right pace . . . Lola Wicks is going to be around for a long, long time.” —Kirkus Reviews on Dakota

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop water use can be increased by management of surface runoff, groundwater, irrigation, and soil water. Technological innovations to enhance availability of water for agricultural crops depend on soil and site-specific conditions. Devoted to the principles and practices of enhancing water use efficiency, Soil Water and Agronomic Productivity addresses current problems associated with water supplies required for agricultural purposes and food production. Written for professionals and students in agricultural fields, the book focuses on innovative technologies for improving soil water availability, enhancing water use efficiency, and using productive irrigation systems. It also presents techniques to conserve water in the root zone as well as remote sensing techniques to assess soil water regime and predict drought on a regional scale. Soil water management is crucial to reducing the vulnerability to agronomic drought. There are numerous examples of aquifers that have been severely depleted by misuse and mismanagement. Soil Water and Agronomic Productivity explains the factors and causes of the mismanagement of soil water and proposes options for sustainable and efficient use of scarce water resources.
