Book excerpt: Since the mid-2000s, the population has shown evidence of major demographic changes including increased neonate mortality and a decline in the proportion of young individuals in the population. [...] Reproductive output appears to have changed recently, with a decline in the proportion of immature individuals and other major changes in demography of the population since the late 1990s. [...] Special Significance The Beluga is the only species of its genus and is one of only two species in the family Monodontidae, the other being the Narwhal. [...] Beluga summer distribution in the SLE is centred at the outflow of the Saguenay River, between Battures aux Loups Marins and Rivière Portneuf on the north shore of the SLE, Rimouski on the south shore of the SLE, and to Baie-Sainte-Marguerite in the Saguenay River (Figure 4). [...] Habitat alteration resulting from the damming of the Manicouagan and Outardes Rivers in the 1960s, in combination with over-hunting in this area, may be responsible for the disappearance of Belugas from that part of their historical range (Vladykov 1944; Pippard and Malcolm 1978; Sergeant and Brodie 1975; Laurin 1982; Reeves and Mitchell 1984; Pippard 1985a; Michaud et al.

Patricia Wynne illustrates baby beluga’s icy blue north Atlantic home and lets children get up close to these fascinating and friendly creatures.

Book Effects of Anthropogenic Noise on Animals

Download or read book Effects of Anthropogenic Noise on Animals written by Hans Slabbekoorn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, many investigators interested in the effects of man-made sounds on animals have come to realize that there is much to gain from studying the broader literature on hearing sound and the effects of sound as well as data from the effects on humans. It has also become clear that knowledge of the effects of sound on one group of animals (e.g., birds or frogs) can guide studies on other groups (e.g., marine mammals or fishes) and that a review of all such studies together would be very useful to get a better understanding of the general principles and underlying cochlear and cognitive mechanisms that explain damage, disturbance, and deterrence across taxa. The purpose of this volume, then, is to provide a comprehensive review of the effects of man-made sounds on animals, with the goal of fulfilling two major needs. First, it was thought to be important to bring together data on sound and bioacoustics that have implications across all taxa (including humans) so that such information is generally available to the community of scholars interested in the effects of sound. This is done in Chaps. 2-5. Second, in Chaps. 6-10, the volume brings together what is known about the effects of sound on diverse vertebrate taxa so that investigators with interests in specific groups can learn from the data and experimental approaches from other species. Put another way, having an overview of the similarities and discrepancies among various animal groups and insight into the “how and why” will benefit the overall conceptual understanding, applications in society, and all future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in whale origins is now in an explosive phase, with a cascade of discoveries adding to our understanding of the evolutionary pattern and a suite of new techniques being applied to address new questions. The objective of this volume is to provide a snapshot of this explosion. The volume paints the scene with a broad brush. Taken together the chapters clearly indicate that cetacean origins is a field that is dynamic, multidisciplinary, and that the end of the explosive phase is not in sight.

Book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Odontocetes

Download or read book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Odontocetes written by Bernd Würsig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on the marine mammalian group of Odontocetes, the toothed whales, dolphins, and porpoises. In 23 chapters, a total of 40 authors describe general patterns of ethological concepts of odontocetes in their natural environments, with a strong bent towards behavioral ecology. Examples are given of particularly well-studied species and species groups for which enough data exist, especially from the past 15 years. The aim is to give a modern flavor of present knowledge of ethology and behavior of generally large-brained behaviorally flexible mammals that have evolved quite separately from social mammals on land. As well, the plight of populations and species due to humans is described in multiple chapters, with the goal that an understanding of behavior can help to solve or alleviate at least some human-made problems.
