This book was released on 2005 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the peer review meeting summarized in this report was to proceed with a recovery potential assessment for 4 beluga populations designated as at risk under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). The 4 beluga populations are the Cumberland Sound, the Saint Lawrence Estuary, the Ungava Bay and the Eastern Hudson Bay populations. The 1st part of the meeting focussed on the development of interim descriptions of the biological properties of suitable recovery targets and recovery times that could be applied to beluga populations of concern. The 2nd part of the meeting addressed the recovery potential assessment for each beluga population.

Download or read book Recovery Potential Assessment of Cumberland Sound Ungava Bay Eastern Hudson Bay and St Lawrence Beluga Populations Delphinapterus Leucas written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) occur throughout the Canadian Arctic and in the Saint Lawrence River estuary. The beluga populations of Cumberland Sound, Eastern Hudson Bay, Ungava Bay and Saint Lawrence River Estuary are considered endangered. This document describes the characteristics of a recovered beluga population, discusses considerations in selecting recovery times, and provides information on species biology. It then provides a recovery potential assessment for each of the endangered populations.

Book Update to the Proportion of Eastern Hudson Bay Beluga Harvested and Implications for Harvest Allocations in Nunavik

Download or read book Update to the Proportion of Eastern Hudson Bay Beluga Harvested and Implications for Harvest Allocations in Nunavik written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated information indicated that the proportion of EHB beluga whales taken in the Ungava Bay spring hunt declined from the 10% used in the plan to 8.8%, while the proportion in the Hudson Strait spring hunt increased from the 10% used in the plan to 11.7%, and from 20% to 23.6% in the Hudson Strait fall hunt (Tables 1 and 2). [...] If the 2016 harvest is 98 whales, and the seasonal pattern is the same as in 2014 and 2015, then the estimated total number of EHB belugas harvested by Sanikiluaq hunters would be (4.7 + 2.3) = 7 animals over the life of the 2014-2017 management plan, not the 18 animals as originally assumed. [...] Estimated seasonal breakdown of reported beluga harvest from Sanikiluaq, assuming that the distribution of harvest effort is the same as the proportion of sample kits returned by hunters, and the estimated total number of belugas harvested. [...] Based on the reported 2014 and 2015 harvests and assuming that the seasonal distribution of the overall harvest is the same as the distribution of the skin sampling program, then 83% of the animals are harvested between April 1 to June 30 harvests, and 2.8% of these are EHB beluga whales. [...] Adding in the estimated 6 EHB beluga whales removed in 2014-2015 in Sanikiluaq, results in removal estimates of 8 to 16 EHB belugas over the life of the plan (Tables 5 and 6).

Download or read book Stock Discrimination of Belugas Delphinapterus Leucas Hunted in Eastern Hudson Bay Northern Qu bec Hudson Strait and Sanikiluaq Belcher Islands Using Mitochondrial DNA and 15 Nuclear Microsatellite Loci written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the possibility that beluga of eastern Hudson Bay (EHB) were hunted by communities outside the EHB arc. It presents results of molecular genetic studies of tissue samples collected from beluga from the Belcher Islands area, EHB communities, north-west Quebec, and Hudson Strait. Individuals & sample populations were characterized with a mitochondrial DNA d-loop sequence of 324 base pairs which described 32 different halotypes (maternally inherited) and with 15 nuclear microsatellite loci (inherited from both parents).

Book Land based Observations of Beluga at Tuututuup Nuvunga Southern Ungava Bay Summer 1993

Download or read book Land based Observations of Beluga at Tuututuup Nuvunga Southern Ungava Bay Summer 1993 written by D. W. Doidge and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on catch records, the beluga population in southern Ungava Bay was estimated to contain at least 1 000 individuals before the start of commercial exploitation in the late 1870s (Finley et al 1982, Reeves and Mitchell 1987). During the 1880s, the Hudson's Bay Company conducted a beluga fishery at the Whale River in conjunction with a fishery on the Koksoak. Commercial exploitation continued in the Koksoak and Leaf rivers until the turn of the century, whereupon the combination of reduced whale numbers and the reluctance of the belugas to enter nets led to the closure of the commercial fishery (Reeves and Mitchell 1987). It is unclear whether the belugas which presently summer in estuaries in southern Ungava Bay form a resident stock, or are migrants from Hudson Strait. The low number of beluga which now frequent the Mucalic [Marralik] and Whale Rivers may be due to reduced population size or human disturbance which may have caused the whales to go elsewhere. These rivers are on the sea-route for travel between Kuujjuaq and Kangiqsualujjuaq. A popular charr fishing area exists in the area to the northeast of the Mucalic River. People also hunt seal and gather eggs in this vicinity. Caron (1987) described the behaviour and reaction of belugas to human disturbance at the Nastapoka River, eastern Hudson Bay, but comparable studies have not been conducted in southern Ungava Bay. The present study was conducted at Tuttutuup Nuvunga to document the level of human activity and the frequency of occupation by belugas in the area of the Mucalic [Marralik] River and Whale estuaries.
