Book American Science Fiction Television and Space

Download or read book American Science Fiction Television and Space written by Joel Hawkes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection reads the science fiction genre and television medium as examples of heterotopia (and television as science fiction technology), in which forms, processes, and productions of space and time collide – a multiplicity of spaces produced and (re)configured. The book looks to be a heterotopic production, with different chapters and “spaces” (of genre, production, mediums, technologies, homes, bodies, etc), reflecting, refracting, and colliding to offer insight into spatial relationships and the implications of these spaces for a society that increasingly inhabits the world through the space of the screen. A focus on American science fiction offers further spatial focus for this study – a question of geographical and cultural borders and influence not only in terms of American science fiction but American television and streaming services. The (contested) hegemonic nature of American science fiction television will be discussed alongside a nation that has significantly been understood, even produced, through the television screen. Essays will examine the various (re)configurations, or productions, of space as they collapse into the science fiction heterotopia of television since 1987, the year Star Trek: Next Generation began airing.

Download or read book Reimagining American Education to Serve All Our Children written by Deborah Greenblatt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagining American Education to Serve All Our Children: Why Should We Educate in a Democracy? examines and reevaluates the history and purpose of public education in the United States, in order to provide students of current and future generations with a robust and fulfilling learning experience. The authors approach knowledge from a critical perspective, with the intention of broadening the definition of knowledge and critical thinking, positioning education as a gateway to life’s endless possibilities and participation in a democratic society. In asking "why should we educate in a democracy rather than why do we educate in a democracy," the authors suggest directions that need to be taken to enhance democracy, social justice, and the positive effects of education for all. Divided into ten concise chapters, this volume provides activities and strategies for developing meaning for often contentious concepts, illustrates concepts, and brings together new ideas as well as assessment ideas. Greenblatt and Michelli and their coauthors cover a diverse range of important topics allowing us to understand education in a democracy, including: Sociopolitical barriers to knowledge The importance of all subjects, including the arts, health and physical education Methods of fostering imaginative thinking The political nature of the effects of policies on education Reimagining American Education to Serve All Our Children aims to provide practicing teachers, teacher educators, graduate education students—and all those interested in enhancing education, a discussion on the relationship between education and policy. A topical conversation, this book aids readers to develop a better understanding of the effects of social justice on American learners and the effects of education on social justice and democracy in order to take a position on these critical issues.

Book excerpt: The only existing biography of the 33 Day Pope. It is the record of his struggles as an impoverished child, as a revolutionary priest, as an outspoken bishop, as a compassionate cardinal and as a beloved pope. It is the record of his philosophies, and of his hopes, and of his dreams, for mankind. For twenty years as a bishop, he was a rampaging locomotive running about the courts and Parliament of Italy demanding equal rights for oppressed peoples. In 1967, faced by an orphan population of two million in Italy, it was his lobbying in Italian Parliament that made it legal for single persons to adopt children. An opposition member challenged, "That would make it legal for homosexuals to adopt children," Bishop Luciani, responded, "Until the day comes that we can guarantee equal human rights and dignity to the tiniest minority, we cannot truthfully call ourselves a democracy." His intentions concerning bastards, women, homosexuals, etc. was quite evident in his acceptance speech, ". . . we must rise up the courage within us to set aside the convictions of our forefathers and together we will muster the strength to lift those restraints that have been unfairly placed by doctrine upon the everyday lives of many innocent people . . . for God-given human life is infinitely more precious than is man-made doctrine . . ." On the evening of September 26, 1978, he called together the Vatican cardinals. He told them "The Church's ban on contraception is the driving force behind disease, poverty and starvation in third world countries and abortions in first world countries." . . .He told them one thing more. "Mother Church is about to cease to be the cause of many of the world's problems and rather will begin to be the answer to them."

Here, Burns examines Roosevelt’s skillful wartime leadership as well as his vision for post-war peace. Hailed by William Shirer as “the definitive book on Roosevelt in the war years,” and by bestselling author Barbara Tuchman as “engrossing, informative, endlessly readable,” The Soldier of Freedom is a moving profile of a leader gifted with rare political talent in an era of extraordinary challenges, sacrifices, heroism, and hardship.

Book The Rise of AI

    Book Details:
  • Author : Scott Billups
  • Publisher : Netcastle Press
  • Release : 2024-03-12
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 107 pages

Download or read book The Rise of AI written by Scott Billups and published by Netcastle Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’re looking for a feel-good book about AI, this isn’t it. This book is written by a battle-scared veteran who innovated the use of AI in the trenches of Hollywood, healthcare, and defense. Grounded in the author's extensive experience, this book delivers a quantifiable vision of the near future that presents a uniquely relatable narrative. Using personal ground-breaking projects, he leverages the well-established precision of Moore's Law to trace the trajectory of pivotal AI-driven technologies and project them into our immediate future. HEALTHCARE Healthcare is a ravenous beast that gobbles up more of the federal budget than Social Security, Defense, and education combined. Despite the illusion of benevolence, it is this country’s largest industry, with only one edict: “charge as much as the market will bear.” So, before we start lauding the abilities of AI to revolutionize healthcare, let’s take a look at what is really going on. Moore’s Law indicates that without strategic advances in AI-robotic healthcare, the global healthcare system will collapse in eight years. HOLOSAPIENS Soon, many of your favorite people won’t be. The integration of Augmented Reality (AR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Brain Control Interfaces, Edge Computing sets the stage for the emergence of Holosapiens. In this era, AI-driven virtual entities seamlessly weave into our daily lives, offering companionship, assistance, and entertainment in a profoundly interactive and immersive manner. Moore’s Law says that as BCI and Quantum AI continue to develop, we will soon become them - or them us. AUTONOMOUS LETHALITY if AI were to take on human form, devoid of morals, unable to experience empathy, and untouched by fear, we would undoubtedly label such a being as an extremely dangerous psychopath. Yet these same attributes conspire to give birth to weaponized autonomy, the new face of armed conflict. Moore's Law predicts that within the next five years, we will lose control of autonomous lethality as macro drones and bio-bots upend the society’s balance of checks and measures.
