Book excerpt: In the early 1900's a gentleman and financier named Sir Henry Mill Pellatt (builder of the famous 'Casa Loma' in Toronto) started to piece together several farms (1,214 acres) to create what he called Lake (or Lac) Marie Farm & Country Estate. The name Marie was to honor his first wife Lady Mary Pellatt (nee Dodgson). Designed to be a place of respite for high society, hunt events and highballs on the verandah (1911-1935) this land came into the ownership of a group of Basilian leaders who took this site of social indulgence and converted into "Marylake Agricultural School and Farm Settlement Association" (now 814 acres). On August 25, 1942, the Agricultural School sold to the Augustinian Father of Ontario (Inc.) and as such, Marylake Monastery, Retreat House and site of Pilgrimage was born.

Book Historic Native Peoples of Texas

Download or read book Historic Native Peoples of Texas written by William C. Foster and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incredibly detailed account of Indigenous lifeways during the initial rounds of European exploration in south-central North America. Several hundred tribes of Native Americans were living within or hunting and trading across the present-day borders of Texas when Cabeza de Vaca and his shipwrecked companions washed up on a Gulf Coast beach in 1528. Over the next two centuries, as Spanish and French expeditions explored the state, they recorded detailed information about the locations and lifeways of Texas’s Native peoples. Using recent translations of these expedition diaries and journals, along with discoveries from ongoing archaeological investigations, William C. Foster here assembles the most complete account ever published of Texas’s Native peoples during the early historic period (AD 1528 to 1722). Foster describes the historic Native peoples of Texas by geographic regions. His chronological narrative records the interactions of Native groups with European explorers and with Native trading partners across a wide network that extended into Louisiana, the Great Plains, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Foster provides extensive ethnohistorical information about Texas’s Native peoples, as well as data on the various regions’ animals, plants, and climate. Accompanying each regional account is an annotated list of named Indigenous tribes in that region and maps that show tribal territories and European expedition routes. “A very useful encyclopedic regional account of the Europeans and Native peoples of Texas who encountered one another during the relatively unexamined two hundred years before the Spanish occupation of Texas and the French establishment of Louisiana.” —Southwestern Historical Quarterly

Book Tamers of the Texas Frontier

Download or read book Tamers of the Texas Frontier written by C. Herndon Williams and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-06 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1820s, Texas was a wilderness. Settlers thought it was uninhabited although rich with wild game. But many Native American tribes lived in Texas and were at war with the Spanish in Mexico. Mexico ignored Texas and did not try to inhabit this wilderness. Finally, in the late 1820s and early 1830s Stephen F. Austin was allowed to bring in three hundred Anglo settlers and Texas began to be civilized. But to start there was only one town, no roads, no bridges, no planted fields. Texas was starting from ground zero but started fast. They tamed the wilderness and fought the Indians. They got their independence from Mexico and became a Republic, soon a U S state. They established a stable government similar to the one in the US and developed the infrastructure for business and international commerce. In less than eighty years Texas had tamed the wild frontier and became a modern state in the United States. C. Herndon Williams has found forty-two stories that chart this progress.

Book excerpt: An earl has been appointed guardian to a teenage boy—but all is not what it seems in this romantic comedy by “the best of the Regency writers” (Kirkus Reviews). Freddie Armstrong, an eighteen-year-old boy, is joining the earl of Berham’s household. It’s the earl’s duty to serve as guardian, even though he doesn’t feel enthusiastic about taking on the responsibility. But when he finds out that Freddie is actually Frederica, the situation becomes intolerable. Freddie, the product of an unconventional childhood, is soon sent away to a seminary for young ladies—at the suggestion of Lady Clarissa, who secretly wants the earl all to herself. But Freddie intends to escape the awful institution, and what follows will surprise the earl even more than discovering his ward’s true identity Originally published under the name Marion Chesney, this Regency romp comes from the New York Times–bestselling author who “deftly blends humor and adventure” (Booklist).
