Book My Extraordinary Courageous Adventure

Download or read book My Extraordinary Courageous Adventure written by Bella Pearce and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of 2011, after a horrendous year that she would rather forget and struggling with a midlife crisis, author Bella Pearce knew something had to change. Summoning her strength, she decided to spend twelve months on an overseas adventure, volunteering around Canada and the United States through the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) program. Bella relied on her courage to leave behind a thirty-two-year-old marriage, close down her business, and walk away. She initially intended to use the trip to rediscover the person she knew had been buried by grief, stress, and loneliness. But over time, it became an extraordinary and courageous journey. She could never have dreamed up the experiences she had, the challenges she faced, or the places she encountered. The universe directed Bella to where she needed to be, and at each location she learned lessons on the path to her recovery. Although she expected to find passion, compassion, and a renewed perspective on life, what she gained during her time away was much more than she ever imagined possible. In this memoir, one woman recounts the story of her life-changing year volunteering and traveling around North America and the Caribbean, while in search of herself.

Book Constructing Black Selves

Download or read book Constructing Black Selves written by Lisa Diane McGill and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1965, the Hart-Cellar Immigration Reform Act ushered in a huge wave of immigrants from across the Caribbean—Jamaicans, Cubans, Haitians, and Dominicans, among others. How have these immigrants and their children negotiated languages of race and ethnicity in American social and cultural politics? As black immigrants, to which America do they assimilate? Constructing Black Selves explores the cultural production of second-generation Caribbean immigrants in the United States after World War II as a prism for understanding the formation of Caribbean American identity. Lisa D. McGill pays particular attention to music, literature, and film, centering her study around the figures of singer-actor Harry Belafonte, writers Paule Marshall, Audre Lorde, and Piri Thomas, and meringue-hip-hop group Proyecto Uno. Illuminating the ways in which Caribbean identity has been transformed by mass migration to urban landscapes, as well as the dynamic and sometimes conflicted relationship between Caribbean American and African American cultural politics, Constructing Black Selves is an important contribution to studies of twentieth century U.S. immigration, African American and Afro-Caribbean history and literature, and theories of ethnicity and race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian filmmakers have created some of the most magical and moving, violent and controversial films in world cinema. During its twentieth-century heyday, Italy's film industry was second only to Hollywood as a popular film factory, exporting cinematic dreams with multinational casts to the world, ranging across multiple genres. 'Cinema Italiano' is the first book to discuss comprehensively and in depth this Italian cinema, both popular and arthouse. It is illustrated throughout with rare stills and international posters from this revered era in European cinema and reviews over 350 movies. Howard Hughes uncovers this treasure trove of Italian films, from Lucino Visconti's epic 'The Leopard' to the cult superhero movie 'Puma Man'. Dario Argento's bloody 'gialli' thrillers and Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns are explored alongside films of Federico Fellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michelangelo Antonioni. Chapters discuss the rise and fall of genres such as mythological epics, gothic horrors, science fiction, spy films, war movies, costume adventures, zombie films, swashbucklers, political cinema and 'poliziotteschi' crime films. They also trace the directorial careers of Mario Bava, Sergio Corbucci, Francesco Rosi, Lucio Fulci, Duccio Tessari, Enzo G. Castellari, Bernardo Bertolucci and Gillo Pontecorvo.

Book Colonialism s Children

Book excerpt: The book that you are about to read are actual events that happen in my life. Only the names of the people have been changed. When I was growing up as a girl, I had dreams of getting a good job and marring a wonderful man and raising a family. And live the fairy tale of living happily ever after. But my life did not take that route.. Instead, I had a whirlwind of marriages gone wrong. Some women, especially single women would ask me what I did to get all those men to marry me. My responds to them was nothing. I met my true love when I was going through a terrible divorce from my second husband. I met Leroy when I was in a difficult situation. My ex-husband played around on me and committed adultery. That is why I filed for divorce. And the bad thing about the whole ordeal is that he really did not love me and he did not want anybody else to love me either. I was just too blind at the time to see. What really made matters worst is, I was still very much in love with my ex-husband. Even though I had filed for a divorce. To make a long story short it ended up breaking Leroy's heart. Therefore, I ended up marring my ex-husband a second time. And that marriage was an even bigger mistake than before. The marriage did not last over two months. But it left a big scare in my life. That is when I went into a whirlwind of marriages that followed. I did not see Leroy until thirteen years later. Leroy went on with his life and married a woman and moved to San Diego, Ca. to start their new life together.
