Book Wordsworth s Counterrevolutionary Turn

Download or read book Wordsworth s Counterrevolutionary Turn written by John Rieder and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing throughout that Wordsworth's originality springs from his invention and elaboration of a peculiarly literary form of community, Rieder maintains that the didactic element in Wordsworth's concept of community was doomed to irrelevance by the course of English economic and social development. Yet, Wordsworth's writing became enormously influential, not by virtue of the agrarian community it envisioned, but rather by virtue of the literary form of community it modeled and produced in its dissemination.

Book The Neo classic Mock Epic and Its Relation to Epic and Satire

Download or read book The Neo classic Mock Epic and Its Relation to Epic and Satire written by Sister M. Francesca Cabrini Weber and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present study is interested in discovering why the mock epic should rise to such widespread popularity; what constituted its special appeal; why, in fact, the peak of its development should be almost coterminous with the general limits of this age. Even if we attribute much of this prominence to the genius of a poet such as [Alexander] Pope, we must still account for the interest which it elicited from him." Examined works include Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" and "The Dunciad" and Samuel Garth's "The Dispensary."--The Introduction, l.1

Book Writing Spaces 1

Download or read book Writing Spaces 1 written by Charles Lowe and published by Parlor Press LLC. This book was released on 2010-06-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volumes in Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing offer multiple perspectives on a wide-range of topics about writing, much like the model made famous by Wendy Bishop’s “The Subject Is . . .” series. In each chapter, authors present their unique views, insights, and strategies for writing by addressing the undergraduate reader directly. Drawing on their own experiences, these teachers-as-writers invite students to join in the larger conversation about developing nearly every aspect of craft of writing. Consequently, each essay functions as a standalone text that can easily complement other selected readings in writing or writing-intensive courses across the disciplines at any level. Topics in Volume 1 of the series include academic writing, how to interpret writing assignments, motives for writing, rhetorical analysis, revision, invention, writing centers, argumentation, narrative, reflective writing, Wikipedia, patchwriting, collaboration, and genres.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: Ill EDUCATION The father of Washington received his education at Appleby School in England, and, true to his alma mater, he sent his two elder sons to the same school. His death when George was eleven prevented this son from having the same advantage, and such education as he had was obtained in Virginia. His old friend, and later enemy, Rev. Jonathan Boucher, said that George, like most people thereabouts at that time, had no education than reading, writing and accounts which he was taught by a convict servant whom his father bought for a schoolmaster; but Boucher managed to include so many inaccuracies in his account of Washington, that even if this statement were not certainly untruthful in several respects, it could be dismissed as valueless. Born at Wakefield, in Washington parish, Westmoreland, which had been the home of the Wash- ingtons from their earliest arrival in Virginia, George was too young while the family continued there to attend the school which had been founded in that parish by the gift of four hundred and forty acres from some early patron of knowledge. When the boy was about three years old, the family removed to Washington, as Mount Vernon was called before it was renamed, and dwelt there from 1735till 1739, when, owing to the burning of the homestead, another remove was made to an estate on the Rappahannock, nearly opposite Fredericksburg. Here it was that the earliest education of George was received, for in an old volume of the Bishop of Exeter's Sermons his name is written, and on a flyleaf a note in the handwriting of a relative who inherited the library states that this autograph of George Washington's name is believed to be the earliest specimen of his handwriting, when he was probably not more than eight or nine years old.
