Download or read book Taking Up Space written by Pattie Thomas, Ph.D. and published by Pearlsong Press. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Up Space is a sociological memoir about being fat and the physical, emotional and economic costs of trying to pass for thin in a culture that stigmatizes fat people. Making her own life a case study, medical sociologist Pattie Thomas, Ph.D., with the help of her co-author and husband Carl Wilkerson, M.B.A., outlines how stigma limit and shape the life chances of all people and are supported within culture. Through narrative text, poetry, essays, photos and drawings, Dr. Thomas shares her own process and demonstrates how a sociologically examined life can be a source for personal growth. An extensive resource section challenges both the popular reader and the academic to further exploration. Kathleen LeBesco, author of Revolting Bodies: The Struggle to Redefine Fat Identity, has called Taking Up Space "a road map through the minefield of the 'war on obesity.'" Foreword by Paul Campos, author of The Obesity Myth (published in paperback as The Diet Myth). The original trade paperback edition of Taking Up Space was published in 2005. The ebook edition was published in 2012 and contains an additional, updated preface.
Download or read book The Transformative Potential of LGBTQ Children s Picture Books written by Jennifer Miller and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-05-23 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Transformative Potential of LGBTQ+ Children’s Picture Books, Jennifer Miller identifies an archive of over 150 English-language children’s picture books that explicitly represent LGBTQ+ identities, expressions, and issues. This archive is then analyzed to explore the evolution of LGBTQ+ characters and content from the 1970s to the present. Miller describes dominant tropes that emerge in the field to analyze historical shifts in representational practices, which she suggests parallel larger sociocultural shifts in the visibility of LGBTQ+ identities. Additionally, Miller considers material constraints and possibilities affecting the production, distribution, and consumption of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books from the 1970s to the present. This foundational work defines the field of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books thoroughly, yet accessibly. In addition to laying the groundwork for further research, The Transformative Potential of LGBTQ+ Children’s Picture Books presents a reading lens, critical optimism, used to analyze the transformative potential of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books. Many texts remain attached to heteronormative family forms and raced and classed models of success. However, by considering what these books put into the world, as well as problematic aspects of the world reproduced within them, Miller argues that LGBTQ+ children’s picture books are an essential world-making project and seek to usher in a transformed world as well as a significant historical archive that reflects material and representational shifts in dominant and subcultural understandings of gender and sexuality.
Download or read book Prettiest Horse in the Glue Factory The written by Corey White and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corey White was a golden child. He knew this because his father would hit his mother and his sisters but not him. And his mother adored him so much she let him drop out of primary school. After losing his father to jail and his mother to heroin, though, he became a target for cruelty and dysfunction in foster homes. A scholarship to a prestigious boarding school lifted him out of foster care and awakened a love of learning and reading for him, but this was soon overwhelmed by a crushing depression and drug addiction. Through it all, he kept thinking - sometimes hoping, sometimes fearing - that he was destined for something bigger. Would he find salvation in the halls of a university, or a poetically grimy crack den, or through love? Or would the golden glow that had been in him since childhood ultimately fade, leaving only darkness and ruin? The Prettiest Horse in the Glue Factory is a memoir of trauma and survival that will break your heart and then show you how to rebuild it. It is a powerful, lyrical and darkly funny debut from one of Australia's brightest young comedians. 'Equal parts hilarious and horrifying, Corey's story is one of the most powerful I have ever read.' Wil Anderson 'Look back in anger. Look around in acceptance. Look forward in love. Harrowing, and yet hopeful.' Tim Rogers
Download or read book Fang Is King written by Joel Epstein and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vacation took a curious turn for Dexter when he discovered he had a very unusual relationship with Martin Luther King. Dexter couldn't tell his mother, because she was too preoccupied trying to get a promotion. His aunt Nina might've been sympathetic, but she had a drinking problem. His cousin Alexis was definitely not an option either. She was too busy teasing him about carrying around a big stuffed dog named Fang. But Dexter had received Fang the day his dad died and had no intentions of ever getting rid of his furry best friend. Although he was very smart, there were some things that Dexter simply didn’t understand. Why was Mr. Hummel so intent for him to visit the top of the Gateway Arch? How could someone as hateful and selfish as Alexis possibly care for a new baby? And why was Ralph being so friendly to him? As summer wore on, Dexter eventually learned the answers to these questions and began to understand how to apply Martin Luther King’s teachings to his own life.
