Book excerpt: In a literary world where we see the constant rush of lemmings diving gleefully off cliffs into the seas of mediocrity and convention, it is refreshing to find that there are creative writers out there who are willing to keep the lighthouse of the avant-garde lit. In this collection one finds fiction fulfilling its core purposes: to warn, to enlighten, to illuminate. As editor Eckhard Gerdes says in his foreword, if you're looking for conventions, buy yourself a fez! What you'll find here is thought-provoking and emotive work, charged with the spirit of delight and wonder as each new possibility is uncovered. This is, without a doubt, some of the best writing of our times. The works in this collection can rub elbows with the great and hold their own. If there is an afterlife, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Virginia Woolf, Richard Brautigan, Italo Calvino, Laurence Sterne, Donald Barthelme, William S. Burroughs, Kathy Acker, Samuel Beckett, Kenneth Patchen, and Eugene Ionesco are all looking at this work and are nodding and smiling.

Book excerpt: An astonishing discovery! Available for the first time in 125 years, the Lost Novels Of Nellie Bly! Pioneering undercover journalist Nellie Bly is rightly famous for exposing society's ills. From brutal insane asylums to corrupt politicians, she used the pages of the New York World to bring down all manner of frauds, cheats, and charlatans. What no one knows is that Nellie Bly was also a novelist. Because, of the twelve novels Bly wrote between 1889 and 1895, eleven have been lost - until now! Newly discovered by author David Blixt (What Girls Are Good For, The Master Of Verona), Nellie Bly's lost works of fiction are available for the first time! These are The Lost Novels of Nellie Bly! Nellie Bly's second novel was ripped from the headlines of 1889! Inspired by her electric interview with convicted criminal Eva Hamilton (wife to the great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton), Nellie Bly’s second novel, Eva The Adventuress, is a blockbuster of the fury of a woman scorned. Born into poverty, beautiful Eva Scarlett rescues a handsome stranger from a mob, trusting him to marry her. She soon discovers he has tricked her, their marriage is a lie! Alone in New York, a “fallen woman,” Eva sets off down a path of vengenace on all those who have wronged her. Her quest is derailed by the genuine love of a scion of a famous family. Yet the past cannot let her go, and Eva discovers that in the battle between love and revenge, only one can triumph. This volume also includes original articles from the real-life Eva Hamilton Scandal as it unfolded across years. Her conviction for attempted murder was only the beginning of a bizarre and lurid tale of purchased babies, scheming lovers, a mysterious drowning, a fortune at stake, and a turn upon the stage! When Bly penned this novel in 1889, her invented ending could not predict the strange twists of fate life had in store for the real—Eva The Adventuress!

Book Nine Lives

Download or read book Nine Lives written by Susan Sheridan and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades after World War II, the literary scene in Australia flourished: local writers garnered international renown and local publishers sought and produced more Australian books. The traditional view of this postwar period is of successful male writers, with women still confined to the domestic sphere. In "Nine Lives," Susan Sheridan rewrites the pages of history to foreground the women writers who contributed equally to this literary renaissance. Sheridan traces the early careers of nine Australian women writers born between 1915 and 1925, who each achieved success between the mid 1940s and 1970s. Judith Wright and Thea Astley published quickly to resounding critical acclaim, while Gwen Harwood's frustration with chauvinistic literary editors prompted her pseudonymous poetry. Fiction writers Elizabeth Jolley, Amy Witting and Jessica Anderson remained unpublished until they were middle-aged; Rosemary Dobson, Dorothy Hewett and Dorothy Auchterlonie Green started strongly as poets in the 1940s, but either reduced their output or fell silent for the next twenty years. Sheridan considers why their careers developed differently from the careers of their male counterparts and how they balanced marriage, family and writing. This illuminating group biography offers a fresh perspective on mid-twentieth century Australian literature, and the women writers who helped to shape it.
