Through a series of intimate, illuminating interviews with various members of the Vineyard, an evangelical church with hundreds of congregations across the country, Tanya Luhrmann leaps into the heart of evangelical faith. Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind, When God Talks Back examines how normal, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry. Astute, sensitive, and extraordinarily measured in its approach to the interface between science and religion, Luhrmann's book is sure to generate as much conversation as it will praise.

Book Believing Faith Speaks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Dunbar
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2018-01-29
  • ISBN : 9781984301383
  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book Believing Faith Speaks written by Eric Dunbar and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith is a gift from God, and although it is not always apparent, everyone has faith. Sadly, many people do not know how to use their faith, and what's even worse, they confuse faith with blind hope. Believing Faith Speaks is a no-nonsense guide to speaking, activating, feeding, exercising, and working your faith according to the Bible. In order to have merit, your faith must be rooted in the Rock of the Word of God. You cannot build a solid foundation of faith on the sandy ground of what you think, what you feel, or what you have heard about God. Your understanding of faith must be founded on what God says of Himself in His written Word. In Believing Faith Speaks, Author, Eric Dunbar talks about faith from the perspective of the average disciple of Christ. Believing Faith Speaks will help you understand how important it is to believe what you speak. It will also teach you how to speak what you believe, as well as teach you the importance of speaking the living Word of God to your situation. The Bible says "God has given every person the measure of faith" (Romans 12:3). That means we all have an equal measure of faith. In "Believing Faith Speaks" you will learn how to use your measure of faith to its fullest potential. You will learn how to activate, nourish, and convert mustard seed faith into awesome mountain moving faith with which you will be able to accomplish the impossible. Faith is something that every believer must learn to possess. It is the one thing that all believers will use daily to do battle against the spiritual forces of darkness. Dunbar explains the fundamentals of faith and why faith is so important to our justification. Faith is complex, but yet so simple. The simplicity of faith is that you don't have to understand faith to have faith. The complexity of faith is working something that you possess, while at the same time, not really understanding how it works. Jesus often used parables to teach kingdom truths to His disciples. The key to understanding how faith operates is revealed in the Parable of the Sower. Having faith is a lot like having a tomato seed. You don't have to understand how a tomato seed produces a tomato plant to get a tomato. God has placed the substance needed to produce a tomato within the tomato seed. When the plant has matured, it will produce tomatoes effortlessly. All you need is a tomato seed, some soil, water, and just enough faith to believe that God will make it grow. The tomato is in the seed. Likewise, everything you desire is in the seed of your faith. Hope is the seed which produces faith. The Parable of the Sower makes that very clear. The message of Believing Faith Speaks is the same message that the Apostle Paul delivered to the churches of Rome and Galatia. It is also the gospel message to the present day church. In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works." God has given us His grace to work effectively. It is important that we have good works because good works is evidence of our salvation. However, good works are not the condition of our salvation. The condition of salvation is based on grace through faith in Christ apart from works. Faith bridges the gap between the physical and spiritual words; without faith, we cannot please God. People do all kind of things to please God. But the Bible teaches us that God is pleased by what we believe rather than what we do. Abraham believed God, and God declared him righteous. God created us to commune with Him. We can only commune with God by faith. Faith is all about what you believe and your faith walk begins with what you believe about God. God's desire is that we enter into His rest. If we are to enter into God's rest we must exercise the faith of God. And since we have the same spirit of faith according to what is written, "I believed and therefore I spoke," we also believe and therefore speak.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller people can believe in—by "a pioneer of the new urban Christians" (Christianity Today) and the "C.S. Lewis for the 21st century" (Newsweek). Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.

Book Dominion

  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2019-10-29
  • ISBN : 0465093523
  • Pages : 624 pages

Download or read book Dominion written by Tom Holland and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "marvelous" (Economist) account of how the Christian Revolution forged the Western imagination. Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion-an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus-was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history. Today, the West remains utterly saturated by Christian assumptions. As Tom Holland demonstrates, our morals and ethics are not universal but are instead the fruits of a very distinctive civilization. Concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, and homosexuality are deeply rooted in a Christian seedbed. From Babylon to the Beatles, Saint Michael to #MeToo, Dominion tells the story of how Christianity transformed the modern world.

Book What Is Saving Faith

Download or read book What Is Saving Faith written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling Author and Pastor John Piper Reflects on the Relationship between Treasuring Christ and Saving Faith What happens in the heart when it experiences real saving faith? John Piper argues that faith in Christ is not saving unless it includes an "affectional dimension of treasuring Christ." Nor is God glorified as he ought to be unless he is treasured in being trusted. Saving faith in Jesus Christ welcomes him forever as our supreme and inexhaustible pleasure. What Is Saving Faith? explains that a Savior who is treasured for his all-satisfying worth is more glorified than a Savior who is only trusted for his all-forgiving competence. In this way, saving faith reaches its God-appointed goal: the perfections of Christ glorified by our being satisfied in him forever. Written by Best-Selling Author and Pastor John Piper: Explores a critical and misunderstood element of the Christian faith, urging believers to ask the unsettling question, Do I have saving faith? Theologically Robust: Studies respected theologians' work regarding salvation, including John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Henry Scougal, John Owen, Wayne Grudem, and J. I. Packer Accessible: Written for students, nominal or thoughtful Christians, and church leaders of all levels, as well as anyone interested in the nature of faith and the essential relationship between faith and feeling

Book excerpt: Yes, faith is that precious treasure which our beloved God and Lord has blessed us His children with. He uses this treasure to enlighten our hearts and our minds, and at the same time to lighten our path, and assist us in all our endeavors. By it, He illuminates His Word to guide us in the path of righteousness. Faith guides us to choose to honor our beloved God and Lord in all our beliefs, desires, thoughts, choices, words, actions, etc., as well as to keep us united in Him and with Him. Because, in all that we do, faith allows us to be certain, and therefore to be conscious of the presence of our God and Lord. In other words - GOD IS. "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Heb. 11:1 Faith also gives us access, and keeps us in the presence of our Father and Lord, and makes Him continue to be real and accessible to us wherever we are, and whenever we want. It enables us to enjoy the reality of the knowledge of the Word of the Lord Jesus, and His ever-present presence with us because He lives in us by His Spirit, and at times His continuous presence overflows and envelops the whole man. "THE CREATION WAITS IN EAGER EXPECTATION FOR THE SONS OF GOD TO BE REVEALED." ROMANS 8:19 Lee Lee - the servant of the Living God - was called separated and sent by the Lord Jesus to the desert region of Chihuahua, Mexico for over 36 years, where he remained totally hidden and his purpose unknown, except to those few the Lord Jesus placed him with. He began writing the first in a series of 14 Books in 2001, and completed the writings in June 2012. The Lord Jesus took Lee Lee home in August 2012. In February, 2018 the Lord Jesus gave the order that His time had now come to begin the release of these Books to His Church.

Book Unbelievable

Download or read book Unbelievable written by Rob J Hyndman and published by Rob Hyndman. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey from faith via evidence. Why a university professor gave up religion and became an unbeliever. Rob J Hyndman is Professor of Statistics at Monash University, Australia. He was a Christadelphian for nearly 30 years, and was well-known as a writer and Bible teacher within the Christadelphian community. He gave up Christianity when he no longer thought that there was sufficient evidence to support belief in the Bible. This is a personal memoir describing Rob's journey of deconversion. Until recently, he was regularly speaking at church conferences internationally, and his books are still used in Bible classes and Sunday Schools around the world. He even helped establish an innovative new church, which became a model for similar churches in other countries. Eventually he came to the view that he was mistaken, and that there was little or no evidence that the Bible was inspired or that God exists. In this book, he reflects on how he was fooled, and why he changed his mind. Whether you agree with his conclusions or not, you will be led to reflect on the nature of faith and evidence, and how they interact.

Book After You Believe

  • Author : N. T. Wright
  • Publisher : Harper Collins

Download or read book After You Believe written by N. T. Wright and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope comes a book that addresses the question that has plagued humans for centuries—what is our purpose? As Christians, what are we to do with that ambiguous time between baptism and the funeral? It's easy to become preoccupied with who gets into heaven; the real challenge is how we are going to live in the here and now. Wright dispels the common misconception that Christian living is nothing more than a checklist of dos and don'ts. Nor is it a prescription to "follow your heart" wherever it may lead. Instead, After You Believe reveals the Bible's call for a revolution—a transformation of character that takes us beyond our earthly pursuit of money, sex, and power into a virtuous state of living that allows us to reflect God and live more worshipful, fulfilling lives. We are all spiritual seekers, intuitively knowing there is more to life than we suspect. This is a book for anyone who is hoping there is something more while we're here on Earth. There is. We are being called to join the revolution, and Wright insightfully encourages readers to find new purpose and clarity by taking us on an eye-opening journey through key biblical passages that promise to radically alter the work of the church and the direction of our lives.

Download or read book To All Believers It s As Simple As This written by and published by . This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet is a condensed version of what Norman Grubb daringly called the Total Truth, and which he gave the last years of his life to spread to the Church. Beginning with God, the All in all, he takes the reader through the biblical basis for the Christian's union with Christ, the fallacy of having two natures, the difference between sin and temptation, how to operate as a truly liberated self, speaking the word of faith and intercession. Those who have read Mr. Grubb's books will find familiar themes, and those who are new to his teaching will be blessed by his passion to reveal the radical core of the Gospel, "Christ in you."
