Download or read book Believe In Africa Love Letters To Singapore written by K.N.Bediako and published by K.N.Bediako. This book was released on with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe In Africa; Love Letters to Singapore brings transformation in the minds of every individual that desires change in the development of themselves, community, and/or nation. Singapore, an island city-state off southern Malaysia, was once a developing nation in Asia. Today, it's a global financial capital. It was not by day dream or a nine day wonder for Singapore to be developed but rather by decades of sacrifice, courage, trust and exemplary leadership. In this book, each poem personifies Singapore as a woman in which the author admires. Just like how a man compliments a woman beauty, each poem compliments Singapore's beauty from its culture, food, to leadership. Love Letters to Singapore is purposed to inspire those reading to not be afraid to learn from others who defy all odds. We need not only to learn in our schools but also from one another, regardless of our backgrounds, to become tomorrow leaders.

Book The Evacuation of Singapore to the Prison Camps of Sumatra

Download or read book The Evacuation of Singapore to the Prison Camps of Sumatra written by Judy Balcombe and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-12-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evacuation of Singapore to the Prison Camps of Sumatra aims to describe the events prior to, during and after the Fall of Singapore and the ways in which former prisoners are remembered on Bangka Island today. It is the product of many years of detailed historical research, interviews with camp survivors and personal experiences discovering and locating the former Japanese civilian prison camp sites of Bangka Island and Southern Sumatra. Judy's aim has been to compile an accurate description of the fate of evacuees from Singapore who were bombed and killed in the South China Sea and Bangka Strait or imprisoned in harsh Japanese civilian prison camps. Many families have not known the fate of their relatives until contacting the author through the Muntok Peace Museum website http://muntokpeacemuseum.org. The Peace Museum was established by prisoners’ families in 2015. The author has also described her many visits to Bangka Island and Sumatra in detail so others may follow in her footsteps and know that their relatives who were imprisoned and died during WW2 are now remembered very respectfully in the small town of Muntok. Annual Memorial Services are held each February 16, attended by families and the Australian, New Zealand and British Embassies. All royalties to this book will be donated to the Muntok Red Cross in memory of the prisoners.

Book Selected Letters of Martha Gellhorn

Download or read book Selected Letters of Martha Gellhorn written by Martha Gellhorn and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Martha Gellhorn's critically acclaimed biographer, the first collected letters of this defining figure of the twentieth-century Martha Gellhorn's heroic career as a reporter brought her to the front lines of virtually every significant international conflict between the Spanish Civil War and the end of the Cold War. While Gellhorn's wartime dispatches rank among the best of the century, her personal letters are their equal: as vivid and fascinating as anything she ever published. Gellhorn's correspondence from 1930 to 1996—chronicling friendships with figures as diverse as Eleanor Roosevelt, Leonard Bernstein, and H. G. Wells, as well as her tempestuous marriage to Ernest Hemingway—paint a vivid picture of the twentieth century as she lived it. Caroline Moorehead, who was granted exclusive access to the letters, has expertly edited this fascinating volume, providing prefatory and interstitial material that contextualizes Gellhorn's correspondence within the arc of her entire life. The letters introduce us to the woman behind the correspondent—a writer of wit, charm, and vulnerability. The result is an exhilarating, intimate portrait of one of the most accomplished women of modern times.

Book Incompleteness Donald Trump Populism and Citizenship

Download or read book Incompleteness Donald Trump Populism and Citizenship written by B. Nyamnjoh and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of how Donald J. Trump, his populist credentials notwithstanding, borrows without acknowledgment and stubbornly refuses to come to terms with his indebtedness. Taken together with mobility and conviviality, the principle of incompleteness enables us to distinguish between inclusionary and exclusionary forms of populism, and when it is fuelled by ambitions of superiority and zero-sum games of conquest. Nyamnjoh challenges the reader to reflect on how stifling frameworks of citizenship and belonging predicated upon hierarchies of humanity and mobility, and driven by a burning but elusive quest for completeness, can be constructively transcended by humility and conviviality inspired by taking incompleteness seriously. Nyamnjoh argues that the logic and practice of incompleteness is a healthy antidote to name-calling and scapegoating others as undesirable outsiders, depending on the brand of populism at play. Recognising incompleteness also helps to question sterile and problematic binaries such as those between elites and the impoverished masses among whom populists go to fish for political visibility, prominence and success.

Download or read book Opting Out written by Joanna Davidson and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women around the world are opting out of marriage. Through nuanced ethnographic accounts of the ways that women are moving the needle on marital norms and practices, Opting Out reveals the conditions that make this widespread phenomenon possible in places where marriage has long been obligatory. Each chapter invites readers into the lives of particular women and the changing circumstances in which these lives unfold - sometimes painfully, sometimes humorously, and always unexpectedly. Taken together, the essays in this volume prompt the following questions: Why is marriage so consistently disappointing for women? When the rewards of economic stability and the social status that marriage confers are troubled, does marriage offer women anything compelling at all? Across diverse geographic contexts in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, this book offers sensitive and powerful portrayals of women as they escape or reshape marriage into a more rewarding arrangement.

Book Faith in the Face of Militarization

Download or read book Faith in the Face of Militarization written by Jude Lal Fernando and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-04-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does believing mean in the face of empire and militarization? These essays articulate the critical and liberating consciousness shared by oppressed peoples across the world, arising from a faith in the God of the oppressed, expressed in radically diverse ways, and resisting the imperialist deities of materialism (read: economic growth), racism, and militarization that falsely appear as the saviors of humanity. The authors confront these false gods--which form the modern empire--worshiped by the most dominant militarized states in the world and followed by their allied states even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. Out of the eleven articles, two are written by critical political analysts with an anti-colonial lens while recognizing the importance of faith in resistance. The rest are written by theologians who critically reflect on their faith within the context of empire and militarization in their societies. Militarization is among the most brutal forms of oppression on the resisting peoples. The theologies that have emerged from critical reflections on their collective experiences are grounded on a material spirituality as opposed to materialistic, racist, and militaristic godlessness. This collection has emerged out of creative and transformative practices in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific, and the US. The essays are divided it into four sections in recognizing some of the key features of material spirituality; indigenous, feminist and interreligious voices, and horizontal solidarity.
