Gretchen, meanwhile, struggles to remember who she is outside their relationship. As distance and Toni’s shifting gender identity begin to wear on their relationship, the couple must decide—have they grown apart for good, or is love enough to keep them together?

Decades have gone by, and D. D. Jenkins takes up the search with very little hope of finding his father's shipmate. While Jenkins carries on the search for Jollar, Phung Tu, an NVA soldier, has carried on his fight against the Americans until they are driven out of his country. He never has forgotten the American blonde giant who frightened him so much as a boy and created the humiliation of having soiled himself in fear that night in the Mekong. His hatred of all things Western has driven him for all his years fighting for his country. Now middle age has found both Tu and Jollar; their lives have settled into a routine that has left the war behind. But unbeknownst to either man, they lives would continue to enmesh in ways neither man could fathom.

Book Feeling Left Behind

Download or read book Feeling Left Behind written by Kim Murdock and published by Bublish, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Colorado Authors' League Finalist 2020 Book Excellence Awards Finalist "Kim's words, ripped from her diary, are raw, painting a picture of the excruciating anguish that so many left behind by the physical departing of a loved one express." —Duck White-Petteruti, Founder, Domus Pacis Family Respite "It will give you, the reader, permission to remember, never forget, and to slowly live from the place of heart again." —Patty L. Luckenbach, MA, DD, associate minister and author of I Only Walk On Water When It Rains The grief that accompanies the loss of a loved one is crippling. In Feeling Left Behind, author Kim Murdock relates and empathizes with that pain because she’s been there. She knows what it feels like to be woefully blindsided by music or at the grocery store, to reconsider the future alone, and to connect with a person who is no longer alive. You will relate to her chapters as she describes: • The crushing desire to freeze time and isolate yourself • The unstable phase of “firsts”― first holidays, birthdays, anniversaries • The anger and sadness at seeing other couples • The loss of self, empathy, security, and tolerance • The heartbreaking sadness of getting rid of their belongings • And so much more This is not a step-by-step guide on how to grieve. Kim outlines every detail of her experience as well as the experiences of her widow/widower friends to show you that you are not alone. You are normal. And you deserve as much time as possible to figure out how to survive in your own way. "Kim's words, ripped from her diary, are raw, painting a picture of the excruciating anguish that so many left behind by the physical departing of a loved one express." —Duck White-Petteruti, Founder, Domus Pacis Family Respite

Book Voices of the Left Behind

Download or read book Voices of the Left Behind written by Olga Rains and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2006-02-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of the Left Behind contains the personal stories of nearly 50 Canadian war children who have been helped by Project Roots. It is filled with fascinating archival images and documents as well as original wartime correspondence between the mothers, the Canadian fathers, and the Department of National Defence, Veterans Affairs, and other Canadian institutions. Letters from the war children to the Military Personnel Records Unit of the National Archives of Canada illustrate the historic pattern of denial. What these institutions all have in common is their consistent refusal to help war children find their Canadian fathers. Introductory essays frame the subject and give a historical context to the tragic situations these women and their children found themselves in.

Book Will Catholics Be Left Behind

Download or read book Will Catholics Be Left Behind written by Carl Olson and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful and timely book, written by a former Fundamentalist, is a thorough critique of the popular Fundamentalist notion of the "Rapture", the belief that Christians will be removed from earth prior to a time of Tribulation and the Second Coming. It examines the theological, historical, and Biblical basis for "premillennial dispensationalism", the belief system based around the Rapture, and popularized in the best-selling Left Behind books and taught by "Bible prophecy" writers Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe, and many others. Written for both the lay person and the serious student, this book combines an engaging, popular approach with detailed footnotes and exhaustive research. Beginning with the big picture, it focuses first on key concepts such as eschatology, the Parousia, and the relationship between the Kingdom and the Church. It then examines the Book of Revelation, providing insights into the nature and purpose of that difficult, final book of the Bible. Another chapter looks at the concept of the "millennium" and how it has been understood by various Christians over the centuries. Olson then shows how Left Behind creator LaHayeಙs many works on "Bible prophecy" are filled with attacks on Catholicism, and often rely on sensationalism, shaky scholarship, and subjective interpretations of Scripture Olson, a former dispensationalist who now edits Envoy magazine, also presents a history of apocalyptic belief and theology, beginning with the Early Church Fathers and including the Montanists, St. Augustine, Joachim of Fiore, the Protestant Reformers, and the American Puritans. He shows how John Nelson Darby, an ex-Anglican priest, developed the premillennial dispensationalist system, which hinges on the Rapture, in the 1830s and how Darby relied upon faulty assumptions about Jesus Christ, the Church, and the Bible. The second part of the book, "A Catholic Critique of Dispensationalism", focuses on three important topics: the relationship between Israel, the Church, and the Kingdom; the interpretation of Scripture; and the nature of the Rapture event. Filled with a wealth of information drawn from both Protestant and Catholic sources, this section provides a complete rebuttal to the premillennial dispensationalist system and the "left behind" theology. The book concludes with a reflection on the Catholic understanding of the end times, salvation history, and the final judgement. Glossaries of key persons and terms are also included. A strong, but fair, critique of a dangerous and popular belief, Will Catholics Be "Left Behind"? provides Catholics and Protestants, lay people and clergy, and students and scholars with important answers and information about the roots and meaning of the "Rapture". "Millions of Americans believe the Lord will snatch them up any day now, leaving the rest of us to the horrors of a seven-year tribulation. The hitch is that the 'Rapture' has no pedigree. As Carl Olson shows, no Catholic or Protestant believed in it prior to the nineteenth century. It is an authentic Fundamentalist 'invention'." Karl Keating, Author, Catholicism and Fundamentalism "In this extraordinary book, Carl Olson uses a surgeonಙs scalpel to cut through the mass of confusion that dominates contemporary reflection on the Last Things. Achieving far more than a refutation of millennialist errors and other disordered apocalyptic theories, he illumines the Church's majestic vision of time and eternity and demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the Lord of History and its end." Book No Citizen Left Behind

  • Author : Meira Levinson
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2012-05-08
  • ISBN : 0674065298
  • Pages : 399 pages

Download or read book No Citizen Left Behind written by Meira Levinson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While teaching at an all-black middle school in Atlanta, Meira Levinson realized that students' individual self-improvement would not necessarily enable them to overcome their profound marginalization within American society. This is because of a civic empowerment gap that is as shameful and antidemocratic as the academic achievement gap targeted by No Child Left Behind. No Citizen Left Behind argues that students must be taught how to upend and reshape power relationships directly, through political and civic action. Drawing on political theory, empirical research, and her own on-the-ground experience, Levinson shows how de facto segregated urban schools can and must be at the center of this struggle. Recovering the civic purposes of public schools will take more than tweaking the curriculum. Levinson calls on schools to remake civic education. Schools should teach collective action, openly discuss the racialized dimensions of citizenship, and provoke students by engaging their passions against contemporary injustices. Students must also have frequent opportunities to take civic and political action, including within the school itself. To build a truly egalitarian society, we must reject myths of civic sameness and empower all young people to raise their diverse voices. Levinson's account challenges not just educators but all who care about justice, diversity, or democracy.

Book Left Behind in Nazi Vienna

Download or read book Left Behind in Nazi Vienna written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-09-24 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938 when Hitler annexed Austria making it part of his Greater German Reich, approximately 185,000 Jews lived in Vienna. Unlike their counterparts in Germany proper, these Jews had only a short time to make plans to emigrate. The development and application of racially discriminatory policies in Germany took nearly five years to come to full fruition. In Austria, the ruthless attempts at exclusion of the Jewish population from both social and economic institutions took barely five months. The editor and his parents were among the few individuals who were fortunate to gain entrance into the United States during this time of crisis. Four days before their departure, the U.S. visa stamped in their passports was the only thing that saved the three from deportation to Poland. The Sechers unavoidably left behind five members of their immediate family who were still waiting to receive visas, but they firmly believed, even as rumors of further restrictive policies against the Jews circulated, that the remaining members of their family would be well out of reach of Nazi policies designed to remove Jews from their homes. There is a lengthy introduction, but the major part of the book is a chronological arrangement of the many letters exchanged between the father and mother and those individuals left behind in Vienna. The letters tell a story of the struggles the remaining five faced in their efforts to stay alive. Of the five persons who contributed to this correspondence, only Fanny Secher (the author's paternal grandmother) died a natural death. The others were deported and never heard from again.
