Book Divine Scripture in Human Understanding

Download or read book Divine Scripture in Human Understanding written by Joseph K. Gordon and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In six closely-reasoned chapters, Joseph Gordon presents a detailed account of a Christian doctrine of Scripture in the fullest context of systematic theology. Divine Scripture in Human Understanding addresses the confusing plurality of contemporary approaches to Christian Scripture—both within and outside the academy—by articulating a traditionally grounded, constructive systematic theology of Christian Scripture. Utilizing primarily the methodological resources of Bernard Lonergan and traditional Christian doctrines of Scripture recovered by Henri de Lubac, it draws upon achievements in historical-critical study of Scripture, studies of the material history of Christian Scripture, reflection on philosophical hermeneutics and philosophical and theological anthropology, and other resources to articulate a unified but open horizon for understanding Christian Scripture today. Following an overview of the contemporary situation of Christian Scripture, Joseph Gordon identifies intellectual precedents for the work in the writings of Irenaeus, Origen, and Augustine, who all locate Scripture in the economic work of the God to whom it bears witness by interpreting it through the Rule of Faith. Subsequent chapters draw on Scripture itself; classical sources such as Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine, and Aquinas; the fruit of recent studies on the history of Scripture; and the work of recent scholars and theologians to provide a contemporary Christian articulation of the divine and human locations of Christian Scripture and the material history and intelligibility and purpose of Scripture in those locations. The resulting constructive position can serve as a heuristic for affirming the achievements of traditional, historical-critical, and contextual readings of Scripture and provides a basis for addressing issues relatively underemphasized by those respective approaches.

Book excerpt: We see many negative things on television and newspapers and all around us every day. All of the morality in the world is gone, and there is no respect. People live as if there is no God. God didn't mean for it to be this way. The things that I wrote about in the book are intended to encourage people, to put a smile on their face, and to change their way of thinking. I know anyone who purchases this book and believes God's words will never be the same. We are supposed to treat people the same way that Jesus did. Think what this world would be like if people were nice to each other. As you go through this life, learn to trust God. Anything is possible with God. Remember, my friends, God is still in control. God loves you. About the Author James G. Odom was born and raised in Perrine, Florida. He is a graduate of Miami Killian Senior High School, Miami Dade Junior College South Campus, and Elpis Seminary. He has a B.M. degree in theology. This is my first book. I had been writing for a long time but never took it seriously. I wrote something for my mother. She took it to church and read it. Everyone asked her where it came from. She said, "My son wrote it." I thought I would be a baseball player. But a woman said to me, "You touch more people with writing than playing baseball." I said, "You are right." All I ever wanted to do was make my mother proud of me. My mother and grandfather were the greatest inspiration in my life. All praise and honor go to God. I'm just doing what I was told to do. A Man of God

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the fundamental differences between the saints of the old covenant and the saints of the new covenant, is that we have the Holy Spirit residing on the inside of us, whereas the saints under the old covenant did not. Because of this fact, God leads His children under the new covenant, completely differently to the way that He led His servants under the old. The primary way that the Lord led the saints under the old covenant was through the office of the prophet. The reason that the saints went to the prophet for guidance, was because none of them had any access to the Holy Spirit. Under the new covenant this is no longer the case, for every saint has direct access to the Holy Spirit who resides within each one of us. And so, under the new covenant there is also one primary way that the Lord leads His saints, and that is through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This book teaches how to be led by Him.
