Book Sex Lies Stellenbosch

Download or read book Sex Lies Stellenbosch written by Eva Mazza and published by Jacana Media. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on true events, Sex, Lies & Stellenbosch uncovers what really goes on behind closed doors in the seemingly up-standing community of Stellenbosch, one of South Africa's wealthiest small towns, where 3,400 dollar millionaires live (before they invested in Steinhoff shares). Written as fiction to protect the innocent, the book exposes the explosive dark truths of the Winelands' elite. All is revealed through the eyes of stay at home mom, 49-year-old Jen, who is the wife of John, a renowned wine farmer and businessman. Jen, like many of her privileged friends, lives a charmed life provided by her husband, in exchange for conjugal sex and obligatory wifely gratitude. When Jen stumbles upon her playboy husband in a compromising position with his sexy employee, things fall apart. Jen is forced to choose between leaving her marriage, jeopardising her standing and stability in the community or turning a blind eye to his infidelity. The book follows Jen's passage to self-discovery and self-fulfillment, while other characters' perspectives move the story forward as each is privy to (and eventually reveals) at least one ‘truth’ or ‘lie’ which Jen must face. Jen's exposition of her husband's infidelity inadvertently mirrors the underbelly of the patriarchal and often duplicitous community of the seemingly perfect Stellenbosch. Led by prominent wine farmers, international businessmen and renowned academics, business and private interests, even if ethically compromised, are staunchly guarded. The unfolding chapters irreverently explore both the emotional growth of the protagonist, Jen, as well as the moral ambiguities of the other players in the book. -- Publisher's description.

Book The Last Elephants

    Book Details:
  • Author : Colin Bell
  • Publisher : Penguin Random House South Africa
  • Release : 2019-03-01
  • ISBN : 1775846830
  • Pages : 563 pages

Download or read book The Last Elephants written by Colin Bell and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Africa-wide Great Elephant Census of 2016 produced shocking findings: a decimated elephant population whose numbers were continuing to plummet. Elephants are killed, on average, every 15–20 minutes – a situation that will see the final demise of these intelligent, extraordinary animals in less than three decades. They are a species in crisis. This magnificent book offers chapters written by the most prominent people in the realm of conservation and wildlife, among them researchers, conservationists, film makers, criminologists, TV personalities and journalists. Photographs have been selected from among Africa’s best wildlife photographers, and the Foreword is provided by Prince William. It is hoped this book will create awareness of the devastating loss of elephant lives in Africa and stem the tide of poaching and hunting; that it will inspire the delegates to CITES to make informed decisions to ensure that all loopholes in the ivory trade are closed; and that countries receiving and using ivory (both legal and poached) – primarily China, Vietnam, Laos and Japan – ban and strenuously police its trade and use within their borders, actively pursuing and arresting syndicate leaders driving the cruel poaching tsunami. This book is also a tribute to the many people who work for the welfare of elephants, particularly those who risk their lives for wildlife each day, often for little or no pay – in particular the field rangers and the anti-poaching teams; and to the many communities around Africa that have elected to work with elephants and not against them. The Last Elephants – is the title prophetic? We hope not, but the signs are worrying.

Download or read book Marikana written by Julian Brown and published by James Currey. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-depth account of the Marikana massacre, based on the voices of the miners and their families themselves, from the build up to the strike to attempts to hold the state to account and its lasting significance. In August 2012 the South African police - at the encouragement of mining capital, and with the support of the political state - intervened to end a week-long strike at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana, in South Africa's NorthWest Province. On the afternoon of Thursday, 16 August, the police shot and killed 34 men. Hundreds more were injured, some shot as they fled. None posed a threat to any police officer. Recognised by many as an event of international significance in stories of global politics and labour relations, the perspectives of the miners has however been almost missing from published accounts. This book, for the first time, brings into focus the mens' lives - and deaths - telling the stories of those who embarked on the strike, those who were killed, and of the family members who have survived to fight for the memories of their loved ones. It places the strike in the context of South Africa's long history of racial and economic exclusion, explaining how the miners came to be in Marikana, how their lives were ordinarily lived, and the substance of their complaints. It shows how the strike developed from an initial gathering into a mass movement of more than 3,000 workers. It discusses the violence of the strike and explores the political context of the state's response, and the eagerness of the police to collaborate in suppressing the strike. Recounting the events of the massacre in unprecedented detail, the book sets out how each miner died and everything we know about the police operation. Finally, Brown traces the aftermath: the attempts of the families of the deceased to identify and bury their dead, and then the state's attempts to spin a narrative that placed all blame on the miners; the subsequent Commission of Inquiry - and its failure to resolve any real issues; and the solidarity politics that have emerged since. Download or read book The Flexitarian Cookbook written by Ryland Peters & Small and published by Ryland Peters & Small. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less of a rigid regime, and more of an organic attempt to eat a mainly vegetarian diet, The Flexitarian Cookbook features delicious plant-centric recipes, with options for incorporating meat or fish as needed. Many of us are looking to eat less meat and/or fish, as the host of environmental, ethical and health-related reasons for doing so stacks up. The concept of not centring every meal around an animal-based protein is well on its way to settling into mainstream society. But out there, there is a whole middle-ground of home-cooks, placed somewhere between carnivore and vegan, who are doing their best to reduce meat consumption, but enjoying it on occasion when the urge strikes; the flexitarians. The Flexitarian Cookbook is a collection of delicious, modern vegetarian recipes, with simple options for switching in meat or fish, as the mood takes you. No longer will flexitarians have to juggle between multiple cookbooks or haphazardly hash together a meaty ending to a recipe depending on their cravings. Recipes include a warm curried lentil salad with crispy paneer and spiced dressing, but the paneer can be swapped for crispy prawns if preferred. A winter vegetable stew with herbed dumplings is substantial enough on its own, but this cookbook gives the option to add slow-cooked beef cheeks, if you like. A best-ever recipe for vegetable and lentil moussaka offers the option to swap the lentils for regular mince meat, while the Moroccan spiced vegetable tagine gives an option for cooking with chicken, if the mood so takes you.
