Book Be Holding

Download or read book Be Holding written by Ross Gay and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be Holding is a love song to legendary basketball player Julius Erving—known as Dr. J—who dominated courts in the 1970s and ‘80s as a small forward for the Philadelphia ‘76ers, as well as over his career in both the NBA and ABA. But this book-length poem is more than just an ode to a magnificent athlete. Through a kind of lyric research, or lyric meditation, Ross Gay connects Dr. J’s famously impossible move from the 1980 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers to pick-up basketball and the flying Igbo and the Middle Passage, to photography and surveillance and state violence, to music and personal histories of flight and familial love. Be Holding wonders how the imagination, or how our looking, might make us, or bring us, closer to each other. How our looking might make us reach for each other. And might make us be reaching for each other. And how that reaching might be something like joy.

Book excerpt: Move from a transactional experience with God to a transformational friendship with Him through prayer. How can time with God be a source of peace in a loud and distracting world? In Beholding, spiritual director and poet Strahan Coleman invites readers to discover the joy of being with God, not just working for Him. As they inhabit the art of resting in God’s presence, prayer becomes not only a place of seeking, but becoming. Beholding calls Christians to understand how: Prayer is so much more than spoken conversation between us and God; it’s a way of existing together. Beholding God in prayer is profoundly connected to beholding and dignifying others. Embracing prayer practices from different Christian traditions digs a deep well of peace in the soul. Our everyday ordinary lives can become the meeting place for God through silence, solitude, community, creation, and hospitality.

Book Beholding Violence in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Beholding Violence in Medieval and Early Modern Europe written by Allie Terry-Fritsch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interested in the ways in which medieval and early modern communities have acted as participants, observers, and interpreters of events and how they ascribed meaning to them, the essays in this interdisciplinary collection explore the concept of beholding and the experiences of individual and collective beholders of violence during the period. Addressing a range of medieval and early modern art forms, including visual images, material objects, literary texts, and performances, the contributors examine the complexities of viewing and the production of knowledge within cultural, political, and theological contexts. In considering new methods to examine the process of beholding violence and the beholder's perspective, this volume addresses such questions as: How does the process of beholding function in different aesthetic conditions? Can we speak of such a thing as the 'period eye' or an acculturated gaze of the viewer? If so, does this particularize the gaze, or does it risk universalizing perception? How do violence and pleasure intersect within the visual and literary arts? How can an understanding of violence in cultural representation serve as means of knowing the past and as means of understanding and potentially altering the present?

Book Beholding

  • Author : Ken Wilder
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2020-05-14
  • ISBN : 1350088412
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Beholding written by Ken Wilder and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beholding considers the spatially situated encounter between artwork and spectator. It argues that artworks created for specific places or conditions structure a reciprocal encounter, which is completed by the presence of a beholder. These are works which demand the 'beholder's share', but not, as Ernst Gombrich famously claimed, to sustain an illusion. Rather, Beholding reconfigures Gombrich's notion of the beholder's share as a set of 'licensed' imaginative and cognitive projections. Each chapter frames a particular work of art from the remit of a complementary theoretical text. The book establishes a transhistorical notion of the spatially situated encounter, and considers the role of the architectural host in bringing the beholder's orientation into play. The book engages a diverse range of practices: from Renaissance painting and group portraiture to intermedia practices of installation and performance art. Written within the broad remit of reception aesthetics, the book proposes a phenomenological theory of beholding, argued through an in-depth examination of artworks and their spatial contexts, selected for their explanatory potential. These various encounters allocate different constitutive roles to the beholder, bringing not only spatial and temporal orientation into play, but also a repertoire of anticipated ideas and beliefs.

Book Beholding the Glory of the Lord

You only need to do one thing: Look to Jesus in faith and enjoy his glorious radiation! Then the Spirit will increasingly reproduce Jesus' own glorious beauty in your life. Via this new approach, Jos Douma knows how to touch and articulate the core of the Christian faith. In doing so, he shows how the Christian life is really worthy living.

Book excerpt: This book restores the imagination to its central role in spiritual formation by recovering key works from the Christian tradition, enabling us to experience the formative power of the imagination for ourselves. It also revives "the art of fashioning the soul" as an essential aspect of Christian spiritual formation and character development. Award-winning professor and scholar Lanta Davis explains that many of the problems at the heart of the Christian church today--such as nationalism, consumerism, and partisan politics--stem from a crisis of the imagination. She encourages us to reorient our gaze from diseased cultural imaginations and fix our eyes instead on works from the historic Christian imaginative tradition that better reflect the love, joy, and wonder of the gospel. Each chapter introduces a different work of the Christian imagination: icons, sacred architecture, imaginative prayer, bestiaries, and personifications of the virtues and vices. An insert features numerous full-color images.
