Book excerpt: A profound insight into the state of our health care system, the wellbeing of patients and that of their doctors. Our health care system is struggling. We live in an era of factory style medicine; spiralling costs; complex and chronic conditions; and doctors at the heart of it under pressure as never before. Witnessing worrying burnout in her doctor husband, Lucy Mayes went on a quest to find out what is really going on behind the scenes in medicine. Lucy asked doctors on the front lines how they make meaning in their work, what quality medicine looks like to them, and what their hopes are for the future of medicine. What emerged were consistent messages about elements of practice that the culture and systems of medicine still struggle to understand and support: the power of humanism; compassion; time; listening; the therapeutic relationship; and mind-body plus other whole-person understandings of health and healing. Beyond the Stethoscope will leave readers shocked, moved and inspired by the human story and wisdom of those who sit before them in that most intimate and ancient of humanist exchanges: that of the doctor and patient.

Book excerpt: So you chose to become a nurse. Why? Most people answer that question with a cliché "I want to help people." Maybe that's the same answer you just gave. That's not the wrong answer, yet it's also not the whole picture. Though good intentions are commendable, grand hopes of changing the world are far removed from the daily reality of nursing. And what it means to change the world is a lot less glamorous than you might like to think. Kim R. Edwards has spent forty years of her life as a nurse. She was a nurse's aide for four years, a student nurse for two years, and on staff at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare for 34 years. Her long-term experience as a nurse has inspired her to share her personal ups and downs in hopes that they will encourage, validate, and teach you throughout your own journey as a nurse. This book of heartfelt stories from the countless hours Kim has spent at her patients' bedside will teach you: How to cope with the challenges you will face when working with seasoned nurses How to be a valuable team player That you are human--and that's okay How to learn from your mistakes and cope with heartbreak If you're nervous, excited, and a little terrified to begin your nursing career, read Behind My Stethoscope to laugh, cry, and learn invaluable lessons straight from the heart of a nurse with over four decades of experience walking that path ahead of you. This life you've chosen will be worth it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trip to the doctor's office is rarely celebrated and almost always feared-not just for the possibility of discovering one is sick but also because of the time, effort, money, and frustration that are involved in receiving care. The work of the doctor providing help is often no less frustrating. As Dr. Tanu Shweta Pandey describes in this firsthand account of the world of a doctor's office, improving health is an act of teamwork fraught with challenges: both the doctor and the patient need to pull their weight to achieve success. A specialist in women's health, Dr. Pandey offers insight into common health concerns raised by women, including sexual desire, physical consequences of women's footwear, and breast cancer. Dr. Pandey also tackles healthcare itself, using real-life patient cases to demonstrate the challenges found in navigating the system and how advocacy and improved patient health literacy are necessary to keep the population healthy in the future. Dr. Pandey's narrative offers a personal look at where healthcare has been, where it stands, where it is going, and how it affects our lives.

Book excerpt: Over the years, what does a Family Doctor hear? He may hear the fresh and strong heartbeats of a newborn baby just entering a complex and challenging world. She may hear the fading, weakening heartbeats of a tired Hospice patient. These Family Doctors will do so using the time-honored medical device known as a stethoscope. Even without using the stethoscope they will hear stories from their patients, some stories clinical and worried, others quiet and hidden. The stories may be about their patients' pains and losses, or about their joys and triumphs. They may be about their fears and weaknesses, or about their courage and strengths. They are usually quiet stories, lives beyond the headlines, the town gossip, even beyond Facebook. The stories are heard if the Family Doctor listens closely. These are the stories beyond the stethoscope, relayed here, in free-verse, as homage to those quiet and fascinating lives.

Book We Are All Perfectly Fine

Download or read book We Are All Perfectly Fine written by Dr. Jillian Horton and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we need help, we count on doctors to put us back together. But what happens when doctors fall apart? Funny, fresh, and deeply affecting, We Are All Perfectly Fine is the story of a married mother of three on the brink of personal and professional collapse who attends rehab with a twist: a meditation retreat for burned-out doctors. Jillian Horton, a general internist, has no idea what to expect during her five-day retreat at Chapin Mill, a Zen centre in upstate New York. She just knows she desperately needs a break. At first she is deeply uncomfortable with the spartan accommodations, silent meals and scheduled bonding sessions. But as the group struggles through awkward first encounters and guided meditations, something remarkable happens: world-class surgeons, psychiatrists, pediatricians and general practitioners open up and share stories about their secret guilt and grief, as well as their deep-seated fear of falling short of the expectations that define them. Jillian realizes that her struggle with burnout is not so much personal as it is the result of a larger system failure, and that compartmentalizing your most difficult emotions—a coping strategy that is drilled into doctors—is not useful unless you face these emotions too. Jillian Horton throws open a window onto the flawed system that shapes medical professionals, revealing the rarely acknowledged stresses that lead doctors to depression and suicide, and emphasizing the crucial role of compassion not only in treating others, but also in taking care of ourselves.

Book The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment

Download or read book The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its report Telemedicine: A Guide to Assessing Telecommunications for Health Care. In that report, the IOM Committee on Evaluating Clinical Applications of Telemedicine found telemedicine is similar in most respects to other technologies for which better evidence of effectiveness is also being demanded. Telemedicine, however, has some special characteristics-shared with information technologies generally-that warrant particular notice from evaluators and decision makers. Since that time, attention to telehealth has continued to grow in both the public and private sectors. Peer-reviewed journals and professional societies are devoted to telehealth, the federal government provides grant funding to promote the use of telehealth, and the private technology industry continues to develop new applications for telehealth. However, barriers remain to the use of telehealth modalities, including issues related to reimbursement, licensure, workforce, and costs. Also, some areas of telehealth have developed a stronger evidence base than others. The Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) sponsored the IOM in holding a workshop in Washington, DC, on August 8-9 2012, to examine how the use of telehealth technology can fit into the U.S. health care system. HRSA asked the IOM to focus on the potential for telehealth to serve geographically isolated individuals and extend the reach of scarce resources while also emphasizing the quality and value in the delivery of health care services. This workshop summary discusses the evolution of telehealth since 1996, including the increasing role of the private sector, policies that have promoted or delayed the use of telehealth, and consumer acceptance of telehealth. The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment: Workshop Summary discusses the current evidence base for telehealth, including available data and gaps in data; discuss how technological developments, including mobile telehealth, electronic intensive care units, remote monitoring, social networking, and wearable devices, in conjunction with the push for electronic health records, is changing the delivery of health care in rural and urban environments. This report also summarizes actions that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can undertake to further the use of telehealth to improve health care outcomes while controlling costs in the current health care environment.
