Book Behind the Scenes at Boston Ballet

Download or read book Behind the Scenes at Boston Ballet written by Christine Temin and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic portrait of an entire ballet season "An amazing book. Temin is a crackerjack journalist, and this book touches on every hot-button issue that is relevant to ballet companies today."--Mindy Aloff "Temin and Gilbert have given us a long-overdue libretto for a ballet about a ballet company. Players on both sides of the proscenium will find Behind the Scenes at Boston Ballet a real page-turner!"--Toba Singer, author of First Position For centuries, ballet companies have been transporting audiences beyond their workaday worlds, one performance at a time. A layperson who sees a ballerina perform in SwanLake may be thrilled or impressed--may imagine the hours of rehearsal that lie behind each performance or understand something about the demands made on a dancer--but many who appreciate ballet remain unacquainted with all the steps, parts, people, and money that must come together for a world-class company to complete a season of performances. Beyond the flash of lights onstage is a world of physical trainers and fundraisers, artistic directors and executive boards, all laboring to ensure that the show goes on. In this unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the life of a company, former Boston Globe dance critic Christine Temin and photographer Wally Gilbert present a compelling portrait of the Boston Ballet. Their evocative prose and penetrating photography turn the spotlight on all the elements--from toe shoes and costumes to rehearsals and revenue--that come together (or fall apart) in a season. Boston Ballet, in turn, makes a perfect study: After a rash of mysterious firings and defections in the early 2000s, the company seems to have moved past the controversy with a new artistic director and a new schedule of international performances. Its story highlights the tremendous amount of work and energy that goes in before the curtain can ever go up.

Book E Virginia Williams of Boston

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E. Virginia Williams was my "Great Aunt", my mother was Janis Williams Sprague. I knew Virginia well. She was a very Determined Woman. When she was born in 1914, Women were not known to build big organization from scratch. She did, and not just one. Yes, she was the founder of Boston Ballet and also the Boston Ballet School. It did not just happen, she first started several dancing studios on Boston's north shore. By 1958, she had founded the New England Civic Ballet. It was a struggle to raise funds and attract great talent. With the help of N Y City Ballet's George Ballanchine, she was able to get a Ford Foundation grant to launch a more profession Ballet Company in Boston. The name was changed to Boston Ballet. She knew that being able to bring in talent, her schools of ballet would be inspired to greatness. She would always need those schools to get as many talented students as she could. The schools kept growing and the Boston Ballet got so good, she took then on world tours to show off how good they had become. Even the Chinese gave them standing ovations, Boston Ballet had created a name for itself on the world stage, under the guidance of one determined New Englander with English, Welch and Irish roots as well as the breath of a Salem Sea Captain thrown in. I'm proud of my aunt and you should be too if you are a New Englander and proud of your Boston Ballet. By the time she was at the end of her life, the Boston Ballet had met her approval by exceeding all her dream expectations. Fifty years after her death, the fruits of her labor still continue to be World Class. Both Boston Ballet and the Boston Ballet School continue to shine thanks to the hard work and determination of one New England Woman. E. Virginia Williams shows us that if we have the right drive and determination, our goals and plans can be accomplished if we never quit before reaching the end zone. She never gave up on her dream and now we all get to enjoy her work. Hopefully this book will show a little more of who she was, her background and spirit from a family perspective. I am the son of Janis Williams. Author John Sprague. Thanks for visiting these pages and please remember her accomplishments in the world of dance.

Book Passionate Work

  • Author : Ruth Horowitz
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2024-08-27
  • ISBN : 1503639614
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book Passionate Work written by Ruth Horowitz and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corps de ballet literally means the "body" of the ballet company, and it refers to the group of dancers who are not principals. Another large group of dancers puts together portfolios of work, often across several dance companies. These categories of dancers typically don't have name recognition and yet comprise the majority of professional dancers today. The ways that they stitch together careers, through dedication, grit, and no small amount of skill – and the reasons they have for doing so without the promise of fame or fortune – are telling of broader trends that shape the precarious labor of professional dance, and creative careers more generally. In Passionate Work, dance hobbyist and sociologist, Ruth Horowitz captures their stories. When creative labor is studied, it is often thought of in opposition to more conventional work, and the primary metric that distinguishes them is passion. Professional creatives are not working in the traditional sense because they are following their passion. By tracing the careers of such dancers, Horowitz troubles the binary understanding of passion and work. A career in dance requires both, and approaching her subjects through this lens allows her to explore their strategies for sustaining passion through the ups and downs of a career. Horowitz explores how dancers evaluate the rewards and challenges of a notoriously underpaid, and uncertain profession. Horowitz considers major dimensions of a career in a performing art, documenting each stage in a dancer's life. Above all, she shines a light on the strategies used to achieve a sense of biographical continuity in a world often marked by discontinuity and rupture.
