Download or read book Beyond the Fa Ade written by Eileen Chubb and published by Chipmunkapublishing ltd. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description and About the Author Eileen is one of the unsung heroines of our time. Years ago when I opened the first refuge in Chiswick, London in 1971, I was fighting to bring attention to the plight of victims of domestic violence. Nan was the oldest member of our community. She came to take refuge with us after a severe beating from her son. She died as a result of a frenzied attack from him when he was drunk. I was always aware of the level of abuse amongst the fragile elderly people in this country but the battle to even get the subject of domestic violence acknowledged amongst the powers that be in England meant that the plight of the elderly in this country slipped under the radar. Whistleblowers anywhere in the world have to recognise that they will always be met with derision and abuse. We all grow up with the nursery story of the little boy who pointed to the Emperor with no clothes I always imagined his mother took him off and washed out his mouth with soap. As a nation the English do not like anyone who 'makes a fuss, ' and I met Eileen when she was already cleaning lavatories to make a living after she was roundly condemned and blackballed by a major Nursing Home provider for daring to criticise their methods of caring for the fragile, elderly patients. Eileen is an immensely courageous woman and this book is the story of her fight to gain recognition for the rights of the elderly community to be treated with respect and compassion. She tells the story of her brave and ferocious battle in such a way that the reader will be swept along and able to share her triumphs and the lows of what has become her life's mission. Her sense of humour never deserts her nor her archaic take on the pomposity of most of her enemies. It is chilling in these pages to read about the lengths people in power are willing to go to stop Eileen and her supporters trying to protect their charges. That a woman of her integrity and compassion should be black balled from the caring profession and forced to clean for a living is a terrible indictment of our society. I firmly believe that this book will reach a wide audience. All of us at one time or another will face the future care of our loved ones. Inevitably all of us will also look for caring as we reach an incapacitated old age. It is the Eileen's of this world who seek to make the changes needed.

Book Struggle Defeat Or Rebirth

Download or read book Struggle Defeat Or Rebirth written by Thierry Dubost and published by McFarland. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Eugene O'Neill, the links between man and his surroundings were of prime importance. His characters struggled with existential problems, and how they related to them reveals much about O'Neill's own humanity. For the most part, the characters defeat their problems and in doing so are reborn in some manner. This work examines the 49 plays that O'Neill completed, focusing on his attempt to find an inner truth in his characters. Part One explores the family, showing how a person is trapped by heredity, space, time and communal hierarchy. Part Two deals with the individual and society, showing how societal conventions confined the characters. In Part Three, personal freedom is the centerpiece, showing how the characters develop a specific approach to life that leads to a coherent vision of the characters' relationships with the world around them.

Book Reproductive Labor

Download or read book Reproductive Labor written by Fouad Sabry and published by One Billion Knowledgeable. This book was released on 2024-02-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Reproductive Labor Reproductive labor or work is often associated with care giving and domestic housework roles including cleaning, cooking, child care, and the unpaid domestic labor force. The term has taken on a role in feminist philosophy and discourse as a way of calling attention to how women in particular are assigned to the domestic sphere, where the labor is reproductive and thus uncompensated and unrecognized in a capitalist system. These theories have evolved as a parallel of histories focusing on the entrance of women into the labor force in the 1970s, providing an intersectionalist approach that recognizes that women have been a part of the labor force since before their incorporation into mainstream industry if reproductive labor is considered. How you will benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Reproductive labor Chapter 2: Feminist economics Chapter 3: Marxist feminism Chapter 4: Socialist feminism Chapter 5: Materialist feminism Chapter 6: Silvia Federici Chapter 7: Migrant domestic workers Chapter 8: Family economics Chapter 9: Selma James Chapter 10: Rhacel Parreñas Chapter 11: Care work Chapter 12: Wages for housework Chapter 13: Filipino domestic helpers in Canada Chapter 14: Women migrant workers from developing countries Chapter 15: Feminist interpretations of the Early Modern witch trials Chapter 16: Mariarosa Dalla Costa Chapter 17: Immaterial labor Chapter 18: Feminist urbanism Chapter 19: Feminism of the 99% Chapter 20: Caliban and the Witch Chapter 21: Women and migration (II) Answering the public top questions about reproductive labor.
