Download or read book The Devil Behind the Mirror written by Steven Gregory and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-04-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Devil behind the Mirror, Steven Gregory provides a compelling and intimate account of the impact that transnational processes associated with globalization are having on the lives and livelihoods of people in the Dominican Republic. Grounded in ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the adjacent towns of Boca Chica and Andrés, Gregory's study deftly demonstrates how transnational flows of capital, culture, and people are mediated by contextually specific power relations, politics, and history. He explores such topics as the informal economy, the making of a telenova, sex tourism, and racism and discrimination against Haitians, who occupy the lowest rung on the Dominican economic ladder. Innovative, beautifully written, and now updated with a new preface, The Devil behind the Mirror masterfully situates the analysis of global economic change in everyday lives.

Download or read book The Tower of Myriad Mirrors written by Yueh Tung and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s most outrageous character—the magical Monkey who battles a hundred monsters—returns to the fray in this seventeenth-century sequel to the Buddhist novel Journey to the West. In The Tower of Myriad Mirrors, he defends his claim to enlightenment against a villain who induces hallucinations that take Monkey into the past, to heaven and hell, and even through a sex change. The villain turns out to be the personification of his own desires, aroused by his penetration of a female adversary’s body in Journey to the West. The Tower of Myriad Mirrors is the only novel of Tung Yüeh (1620–1686), a monk and Confucian scholar. Tung picks up the slapstick of the original tale and overlays it with Buddhist theory and bitter satire of the Ming government’s capitulation to the Manchus. After a nod to Journey’s storyteller format, Tung carries Monkey’s quest into an evocation of shifting psychological states rarely found in premodern fiction. An important though relatively unknown link in the development of the Chinese novel, and a window into late Ming intellectual history, The Tower of Myriad Mirrors further rewards by being a wonderful read.

Download or read book Christ Crucified written by Keith Gugan and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jesus’ time, his acts of healing and various demonstrations were phenomena that captivated many. Countless people experienced healings, mental restorations, and even resurrections. These events, labelled as ‘miracles’ by the emerging church in subsequent decades and centuries, unfortunately downplayed Jesus’ genuine impact on humanity by framing it as supernatural or otherworldly. Intriguingly, several of his disciples and followers carried forward his legacy, healing and teaching in Judea and surrounding regions with notable success. Imagine if this legacy had expanded exponentially and received unwavering support. It could have reshaped society on a global scale. A world transformed where harmony reigns, where wars are unthinkable, and where many of our modern-day institutions, like the healthcare system and the pharmaceutical industry, might not even exist due to widespread health and prosperity. Such potential underscores the magnitude of the missed opportunity. Yet, it also emphasizes that it’s never too late for a renaissance of such profound teachings and practices.

Download or read book Mirrors written by Eduardo Galeano and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his career, Eduardo Galeano has turned our understanding of history and reality on its head. Isabelle Allende said his works "invade the reader's mind, to persuade him or her to surrender to the charm of his writing and power of his idealism." Mirrors, Galeano's most ambitious project since Memory of Fire, is an unofficial history of the world seen through history's unseen, unheard, and forgotten. As Galeano notes: "Official history has it that Vasco Núde Balboa was the first man to see, from a summit in Panama, the two oceans at once. Were the people who lived there blind??" Recalling the lives of artists, writers, gods, and visionaries, from the Garden of Eden to twenty-first-century New York, of the black slaves who built the White House and the women erased by men's fears, and told in hundreds of kaleidoscopic vignettes, Mirrors is a magic mosaic of our humanity.

Many works from ancient Babylon, Greek tragedies and the epic play Faust are used to form together a tangible history of demons in the present day. Although many conclusions can logically be found to be erroneous, the author makes a good attempt to bring together different lines of thought into one cohesive argument. Now in larger print!
