Book The Life of a Balinese Temple

Download or read book The Life of a Balinese Temple written by Hildred Geertz and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should a temple be seen as a work of art, its carvers as artists, its worshipers as art critics and patrons? What is a temple (and its art) to the people who make and use it? Noted anthropologist Hildred Geertz attempts to answer these and other questions in this unique look at transformations in material culture and social relations over time in a village temple in Bali. Throughout Geertz offers insightful glimpses into what the statues, structures, and designs of Pura Désa Batuan convey to those who worship there, deepening our understanding of how a village community evaluates workmanship and imagery. Following an introduction to the temple and villagers of Batuan, Geertz explores the problematics of the Western concept of "art" as a guiding framework in research. She goes on to outline the many different kinds of work—ideational as well as physical—undertaken in connection with the temple and the social institutions that enable, constrain, and motivate their creation. Finally, the "art-works" themselves are presented, set within the intricate sociocultural contexts of their making. Using the history of Batuan as the main framework for discussing each piece, Geertz looks at the carvings from the perspective of their makers, each generation occupying a different social situation. She confronts concepts such as "aesthetics," "representation," "sacredness," and "universality" and the dilemmas they create in field research and ethnographic writing. Recent temple carvings from the tumultuous and complex period that followed the expulsion of the Dutch and the increasing globalization and commercialization of Balinese society demonstrate yet again that any anthropology of art must also be historical.

Book At the Temple Gates

  • Author : Heidi Wendt
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016-08-18
  • ISBN : 019062759X
  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book At the Temple Gates written by Heidi Wendt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his sixth satire, Juvenal speculates about how Roman wives busy themselves while their husbands are away, namely, by entertaining a revolving door of exotic visitors who include a eunuch of the eastern goddess Bellona, an impersonator of Egyptian Anubis, a Judean priestess, and Chaldean astrologers. From these self-proclaimed religious specialists women solicit services ranging from dream interpretation to the coercion of lovers. Juvenal's catalogue suggests the popularity of such "freelance" experts at the turn of the second century and their familiarity to his audience, whom he could expect to get the joke. Heidi Wendt investigates the backdrop of this enthusiasm for the religion of freelance experts by examining their rise during the first two centuries of the Roman Empire. Unlike civic priests and temple personnel, freelance experts had to generate their own authority and legitimacy, often through demonstrations of skill and learning in the streets, in marketplaces, and at the temple gates, among other locations in the Roman world. Wendt argues that these professionals participated in a highly competitive form of religious activity that intersected with multiple areas of specialty, particularly philosophy and medicine. Over the course of the imperial period freelance experts grew increasingly influential, more diverse with respect to their skills and methods, and more assorted in the ethnic coding of their practices. Wendt argues that this context engendered many of the innovative forms of religion that flourished in the second and third centuries, including phenomena linked with Persian Mithras, the Egyptian gods, and the Judean Christ. The evidence for freelance experts in religion is abundant, but scholars of ancient Mediterranean religion have only recently begun to appreciate their impact on the empire's changing religious landscape. At the Temple Gates integrates studies of Judaism, Christianity, mystery cults, astrology, magic, and philosophy to paint a colorful portrait of religious expertise in early Rome.

Book Temple Purity in 1 2 Corinthians

Download or read book Temple Purity in 1 2 Corinthians written by Yulin Liu and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2013 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's view of the church as the temple and his concern about its purity in 1-2 Corinthians has traditionally been interpreted from the perspective of a Jewish background. However, Yulin Liu reveals that the pagans were very aware of temple purity when visiting some temples in the Greco-Roman world, and the purification concerns of three pagan temples in Corinth are documented in his work. The author affirms that the Gentile believers among the Corinthian community were able to grasp Paul's message because of it. Also, Liu investigates Paul's use of temple purity to address the necessity of unity, holiness and faithfulness of the Corinthian Christians in an eschatological sense. The separation of God's people from profane matters actually points to a new exodus and a progressive consummation of the construction of the eschatological temple-community.

Book Mirror Opens Ancient Temple Door

Download or read book Mirror Opens Ancient Temple Door written by William Van Zyl and published by Five House Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have produced a fictitious short story about how Lara and Alexander - the two archaeologists, found the elusive El Dorado temple and unearthed the Golden Mask. In this resource - including the exciting legend of the elusive city of El Dorado - I look at the story, the gold, the treasure, the golden mask, and a modern-day escape room. I provide prompts for using technology - in the context of creating an El Dorado-themed escape room. Inspired by my visit to an escape room in Hamilton (NZ) in December 2023, I show how technology, like digital sensors, surveillance cameras, and more, could be used in escape rooms. I use a simple microprocessor - like the Arduino Uno - to show how this microprocessor could detect light and switch a rack and pinion - powered by an electric motor - to open a door. Just like Lara and Alexander opened the door by reflecting the shaft of daylight from the cave roof onto the mirrors and the Sun motif. I use the Arduino, an LDR (light-dependent resistor), a relay, and an electric motor to show how a door in an escape room can be opened. This resource could be helpful to teachers and students. The focus is integrating different subject areas for a lesson for high school students. For example, the brief is to design an El Dorado-themed escape room. I focus on technical aspects like art, design, and electronics (digital sensors, surveillance cameras, servos, racks and pinons, and more) to detect, switch and move doors. The focus is also on how to create a light sensor (LDR - light-dependent resistor) to detect when a mirror reflects light that suddenly comes from a crack in the cave (an electrical light switched on after a symbolic puzzle is solved). Improving and developing collaboration and solving real-life problems is another aspect I investigate. I look at the design of a board game—context: Escape room. Developing creative and innovative skills of students and teachers. I also touch on renewable systems: Installing solar panels, wind turbines, inverters, and 12 Volt (DC) batteries - on a micro-scale - to power an escape room or a model of an escape room. Lastly, I provide links to cave ecosystems. I include the Waitomo Caves in New Zealand (famous glowworms). See the ideas and concepts for possible lessons for students in this article. It is challenging to layer, embed, and integrate different subject areas into one or a set of lessons.
