Book Behaviour of a Compacted Silty Clay Under Triaxial and Creep Testing Conditions

Download or read book Behaviour of a Compacted Silty Clay Under Triaxial and Creep Testing Conditions written by Stephan K. Saboundjian and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to investigate the load-deformatinn behavior of compacted silty clay when subjected to different forms of loading. Triaxial and creep tests were conducted on specimens compacted at different water contents (dry and wet of optimum - Modified AASHTO compaction). In the case of triaxial tests, a wide range of confining pressures was used and the influence of strain rate, confinement and thixotropy was studied. Constant-load creep tests were conducted on specimens cured for two weeks then subjected to a wide range of confining pressures and stress levels. Results indicate that although the strength of the compacted soil is influenced by strain rate and thixotropy, the failure strain remains essentially unchanged. Similar observations were made in the case of creep tests whereby the failure strain was a function of given compaction (water content) and testing (confining pressure) conditions, independent of stress history. A generalized creep model was proposed to predict load-time-deformation behavior for a wide range of stress levels (both low and high) and confining pressures. Parameters were determined for each case for the prediction of the axial strain variation with time using the generalized creep model. Finally, the failure strain phenomenon was incor¬porated in this model to develop relations between applied stress levels and time to failure.

Book Load Deformation Behavior of a Compacted Silty Clay Under Different Forms of Loading

Download or read book Load Deformation Behavior of a Compacted Silty Clay Under Different Forms of Loading written by Bassam Afif Zeid and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate the load - deformation behavior of a compacted silty clay using different forms of loading. Specifically, the potential existence of an axial strain at failure at which failure occurs irrespective of the previous deviator stress history was investigated. Results indicated that such a strain value did exist and was a function of compaction variables (dry density, and compaction moisture content), and applied confining pressure, The axial strain at failure remained essentially unchanged under creep loading, triaxinl loadƠing at different strain rate application, triaxial loadƠing after long term sustained application of confining pressure, triaxial loading after cyclic deviator stress application and repeated loading. However, the strength seemed to be dependent on stress history and curing age of the compacted clay (thixotropic effects). A proposed hypothesis was used to explain the influence of stress history and thixotropy on strength. Improved creep and repeated load models were also developed to predict load - time - deformation behavior for a wide range of stress applications and duration. Comparisons between theoratical predictions an experimental data agreed well. The failure strain phenomenon was incorporated in these models to develop relations between applied stresses and time to failure.

Book Collapse Behavior of Compacted Clays in Suction Controlled Triaxial Tests

Download or read book Collapse Behavior of Compacted Clays in Suction Controlled Triaxial Tests written by DA. Sun and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a suction-controlled triaxial apparatus for unsaturated soils, a series of tests on a compacted clay was performed to investigate the influences of stress states, water content, void ratio, and matric suction on the collapse behavior. The triaxial tests were carried out under the conditions of (1) different stress ratios and mean stresses, (2) triaxial compression and extension, (3) different initial void ratios of specimens with the same water content, (4) different initial water contents with the same degree of compaction, and (5) different controlled matric suctions. The main conclusions were obtained as follows: (1) The volume change induced by the collapse mainly depends on the initial void ratio and mean net stress under which the collapse occurs, irrespective of imposed matric suction; (2) the amount of collapse is small at both low and high confining stresses, and there exists a maximum value of collapse at a particular mean stress; (3) the shear strain increment induced by collapse depends on stress ratio, triaxial compression, or extension stress; (4) when imposed suction is decreased, large collapse deformation takes place in the samples compacted dry-of-optimum, while little collapse deformation takes place in the samples compacted wet-of-optimum; and (5) the collapse behavior can be explained by the elastoplastic theory for unsaturated soils.

Book Study on the Creep Behavior of Clay Under Complex Triaxial Loading in Relation to the Microstructure

Download or read book Study on the Creep Behavior of Clay Under Complex Triaxial Loading in Relation to the Microstructure written by Dan Zhao and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to analyze the creep behavior of a typical clay along triaxial tests, moreover, to analyze the microstructural mechanisms of creep. Analysis on the macroscopic results ascertained that both dilatancy and contractancy phenomena could occur during creep. The magnitude of the dilatancy/contractancy during creep was guided by the test conditions: stress level and the over consolidation ratio, which specifically governed the direction of the volumetric strain variations. The results of SEM indicated that the microstructural evolution of the clay after the mechanical loading depend on the stress history. Afterwards, the structural evolution in creep phase depends on the structural pattern developed in monotonic loading.

Book Behavior of a Remolded Silty clay Subjected to Sequential Loading

Download or read book Behavior of a Remolded Silty clay Subjected to Sequential Loading written by Lawrence Tsi-Ching Chung and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The investigation was undertaken to determine shear strength and pore pressure parameters of a soil when subjected to sequential loading. This method is intended to similate the in-situ condition of stress application under certain field conditions. The testing procedure, a sequential triaxial shear test, is described. This test consists of successive stages of partial consolidation followed by undrained shear. Triaxial consolidation and shear strength characteristics of a sedimented remolded silty-clay are compared with the results from conventional tests on isotropically consolidated samples. The undrained strength was found to be a function of moisture content, irrespective of the method of test and initial stress system for the normally consolidated soil. A unique relationship was established between a pore pressure parameter, the ratio of the change in pore pressure to the effective vertical consolidation pressure, and undrained strength. It is concluded that this sequential procedure of testing does change the strength characteristics of the soil. These cannot be predicted from the conventional test"--Abstract, page ii.
