Book Preclinical Psychopharmacology

Download or read book Preclinical Psychopharmacology written by D.G. Grahame-Smith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychopharmacology, Volume 2: Preclinical Psychopharmacology presents the mechanism of action of antidepressant drugs and neuroleptics. This book discusses the significance of the interaction between various neurotransmitter system in both biochemical and functional consequences of repeated drug administration. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effects of antidepressant drugs on norepinephrine metabolism. This text then discusses the different aspects of monoamine oxidase and its inhibitors. Other chapters consider the mechanism of action of lithium, which requires consideration of some of the general characteristics of periodic behavior. This book discusses as well the preclinical aspects of tranquilizers, particularly those dealing with benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines acting through the benzodiazepine receptor. The final chapter deals with the various behavioral and electrophysiological effects of cocaine in animals, which presumably reflect both local anesthetic properties and action on monoamine mechanisms. This book is a valuable resource for neuropharmacologists and practicing psychiatrists.

These developments have been integrated into a new undergraduate text from the authors of the widely acclaimed Principles of Neuropsychopharmacology. Psychopharmacology: Drugs, the Brain, and Behavior is unique in its breadth of coverage, ranging from historical accounts of drug use to clinical and pre-clinical behavioral studies to the latest research on drug effects in transgenic mouse models. Student engagement with the material is fostered by opening each chapter with a relevant vignette and by providing breakout boxes presenting novel or cutting-edge topics for special discussion. The book is richly illustrated with numerous full-colour photographs and line art depicting important concepts and experimental data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral pharmacology studies the biological bases of behavior and the pharmacological effects of natural or synthetic drugs through behavioral analysis, with the identification of substances that could contribute to improvement of the quality of life for humans. Through behavioral pharmacology, it is possible to generate knowledge about pharmacological bases that influence the normal or altered behavior from a multidisciplinary point of view, and which includes diverse areas of science. The purpose of this book “Behavioral Pharmacology- From Basic to Clinical Research” is to show some of the advances in the identification of pharmacological properties of natural and synthetic molecules that may be used in the development of pharmacological therapies destined for the treatment of illness and disorders that affect the wellness of humans.

Download or read book Advances in Behavioral Pharmacology written by Travis Thompson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues to document and summarize developments, trends, and emergent interdisciplinary research in behavioral psychopharmacology. For researchers and graduate students in psychopharmacology, behavioral pharmacology, toxicology, and the neurosciences. This seventh volume continues to document and summarize developments, trends, and emergent interdisciplinary research in behavioral psychopharmacology. For researchers and graduate students in psychopharmacology, behavioral pharmacology, toxicology, and the neurosciences. This is the latest volume in a series that continues to document and summarize developments, trends, and emergent interdisciplinary research in behavioral pharmacology, psychopharmacology, and the neurosciences. The chapters, written by authorities in their respective research areas, provide up-to-date examination and analysis of dominant evolving research areas. Designed as a resource text for professionals, as well as a supplementary text for upper level undergraduate and graduate students of behavioral pharmacology, psychopharmacology, psychobiology, and related fields, this book, like the others in the Advances in Behavioral Pharmacology Series, provides comprehensive coverage unavailable elsewhere.

Book Psychopharmacology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan A. Boulton
  • Publisher : Neuromethods
  • Release : 1989-09-12
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 856 pages

Download or read book Psychopharmacology written by Alan A. Boulton and published by Neuromethods. This book was released on 1989-09-12 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of drug effects on behavior is truly a confluence of streams of neuroscience research. The material in this volume covers a broad range of methodology representative of practically the entire scope of psychopharmacology for conscious animals. The contributions in this book represent careful evaluations by experts who were invited to participate because of their excellent practical application of research design and methodology. In each case, a particularly useful and well-written contribution has been forthcoming, and should serve either as a valuable introduction to developing researchers or as a practical reference to those active in the field. The material is arranged in an intuitive hierarchy. This arrangement is based on what are ostensibly increasing levels of integrated activity of the nervous system and, therefore, increasing levels of behavioral integration. Nevertheless, as all of the areas covered are rather detailed in their levels of intrinsic complexity, this arrangement of chapters does not imply successively more intricate problems. The reader will find some overlap between chapters, but little interdependence, i.e., each may be read as a separate or as an integral part of the volume.

Book Quality of Life in Behavioral Medicine Research

Download or read book Quality of Life in Behavioral Medicine Research written by Joel E. Dimsdale and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of, and interest in, quality of life studies has grown dramatically in the last decade. On an ever increasing basis, patients, clinicians, researchers, and health policy regulators are considering quality of life in assessing treatment alternatives. Unfortunately, most discussions of quality of life are narrow in scope -- applying to only one disease group. This unique book represents the concerted effort of experts in academia, federal government health care regulators, and pharmaceutical industry representatives to define the promise and the problems associated with quality of life studies. The issues covered range from cross cutting ones to those that are specific to particular illnesses. Because quality of life takes into consideration such domains as mood, vocation, family, sexual functioning, social participation, and costs, this book will serve as an invaluable companion to readers with an interest in behavioral medicine research.

Book Experimental Psychopharmacology

Download or read book Experimental Psychopharmacology written by Andrew J. Greenshaw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1987-04-07 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychopharmacology may be defined as the study of the effects of drugs on behavior. As an established scientific discipline, this is a relatively new area of research. Despite its short history, however, psychopharmacology has achieved a considerable degree of sophistication in the variety of experi mental approaches that are currently employed. Consequently, the interpretation of data accumulated through the use of various experimental laboratory techniques has become increasingly difficult and complex. Numerous excelIent texts and review articles are available that serve to outline recent progress in psychopharmacology (particularly the Handbook of Psychopharmacology series, edited by L. L. Iversen, S. D. Iversen, and S. H. Synder). Volumes such as these serve to usefully review the available litera ture without attempting a critical appraisal of the utility and limitations of methods and the difficulties of interpreting empirical data. Such conceptual and methodological problems are now an issue of paramount importance in studying the behavioral effects of drugs. The present volume can be regarded as a "conceptual cookbook" that examines the utility and limitations of various experimental approaches commonly taken in psychopharmacology. This practically oriented text should prove particularly useful for pharmacologists and neurochemists who have no formal training in behavioral research and require an intro duction to the actuallaboratory practice of the field. In addition, the useful and informative treatment of current issues in psychopharmacology will undoubtedly appeal to the majority of active researchers.
