Behavioral based measures are considered to be the most sensitive indices of biological effects. Current safety guidelines are based upon average power density and may not be relevant to the high peak power, short pulse width microwave radiation produced by newly developed high peak power microwave sources. The effects of exposure to high peak power radiation on reflexive responding and motor function in Fischer 344/N rats were assessed by measuring startle and general activity, and disruption of on-going performance of a rotarod task respectively. The emitter used was the TEMPO repeat pulse axially extracted vircator. Exposure to single pulses resulted in significant startle responses. Exposure to 1 pps for 10 s produced significant alterations in baseline activity and marked disruption of performance of the rotarod task. The apparently greater effect observed in the rotarod task is discussed in relation to the greater workload that task requires. Experiments are currently being conducted to identify the limits of detection and the quality of the sensory/perceptual experience of exposure to the TEMPO radiation.

Book excerpt: The development of adequate safety standards for exposure to microwave radiation requires an extensive database which provides information on frequency, power, and modulation characteristics. This study was conducted to provide information on the behavioral effects of high-peak-power microwave pulses produced by an axially extracted virtual cathode oscillator. This pulsed microwave source, TEMPO', was located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and for this study was configured to produce high-peak-power 3.0 GHz microwave pulses, 20-60 ns pulse duration with a 7.5 s interpulse interval. To investigate the behavioral effects of the high peak power pulses, four male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatto) were trained on a operant color discrimination task for food pellet reward. The task was twofold requiring monkeys to pull one plastic lever on a variable interval schedule (VI-25 s) and then respond to color signals and pull a second lever to obtain food. During the behavioral task, the monkeys were exposed to microwave pulses produced by TEMPO. Peak field power densities averaged 45.63 kW/cm2, which produced a peak whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) of approximately 2.21 MW/kg (specific absorption (SA) per pulse was 1.3 J/kg). Average whole-body SAR, however, was low due to the short pulse duration and long interpulse interval. Behavioral performance on either component of the task was not altered significantly by the high-peak-power pulses. Transformer Energized Megavolt Pulsed Output(TEMPO).

Book excerpt: The TEMPO microwave bioeffects exposure platform at the Department of Microwave Research, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, produces an 80 ns, 3 GHz microwave pulse with a peak power of 700 MW. The energy transmitted is approximately 16 J, so that at a pulse repetition rate of 0.125 Hz, the duty factor is 10(exp -8) and the average power is 2 W. The time-averaged SAR for TEMPO exposures at full power is 0.072 W/kg, a value well-below suggested exposure limits. Five behavioral tasks were used to determine if exposure affected subsequent task performance: temporal bisection, Y-maze, treadmill running, food motivation (behavioral economics), and Persolt swim test. Reliable effects were found with the temporal bisection, Y-maze, treadmill, and behavioral economics tasks. The pattern of results suggests at least two effects of high-power pulsed microwaves: memory impairment and decreased physical endurance. It was suggested that research be expanded in this area, and that tasks which are specifically sensitive to memory function and physical endurance receive especial attention ... Book excerpt: To investigate behavioral performance effects of localized exposure to the head of very high-peak-power microwaves, rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were trained on a vigilance task. The task consisted of responding on one lever for a variable interval (VI 30-s) schedule and then responding on a second lever for food pellet reward. Monkeys were exposed for 25 min to 1.3-GHz microwave energy pulsed at 7, 9, and 11 pps. The pulse duration was 7 microsec with a peak power of 3.06 MW. Microwaves were delivered to the posterior of the head by an open-end waveguide irradiator. Average specific absorption rate (SAR) in the head ranged from 16.0 to 35.0 W/kg. The microwave period was preceded by a 25- min preexposure period and followed by a 25-min postexposure period, each separated by a 1-min extinction period. Response rate on the VI lever decreased only at 26.0 and 35.0 W/kg compared to sham exposure sessions.
