Book excerpt: He inelastic behavior of irregular shaped reinforced concrete columns has been a constant concern for a structural engineer, to design a safe and economic structure in modern buildings and bridge piers. The shape of the elements in a reinforced concrete structure may be used to optimize its structural strength, to make better use of the available space, to improve the aesthetic appearance of the structure, or to facilitate construction. Due to the locations of the columns, the shapes of the buildings and the nature of the applied loads, many columns are subject to combined biaxial bending and axial load. Seven 1/4 scale direct models of the short, tied columns with channel-shaped cross sections were constructed for the present investigation. All the specimens were tested and studied for their complete strength and deformation behavior under combined biaxial bending moments and axial compression, and were used to examine some of the variables involved such as relative eccentricities and loading variations. The end conditions are assumed to be pinned-ended. The experimental load-strain and biaxial moment-curvature curves have been compared with the analytical results of the strength and deformation for biaxially loaded channel-shaped column members, and a satisfactory agreement was obtained from zero up to the ultimate load condition. The above inelastic behavior of channel-shaped reinforced concrete columns has formed the basis of the redistribution of the moments and forces in a statically indeterminate structure, and these characteristics can also be found useful for the limit analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures.

Book Behavior of L shaped Reinfoced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending and Compression

Download or read book Behavior of L shaped Reinfoced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending and Compression written by Amar Shah and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combined biaxial and axial compression for L-shaped reinforced concrete short columns is a common design Problem. Current code, provisions and the available design aids do not offer an insight into the determination of strength and ductility of biaxially loaded reinforced concrete column. An experimental and analytical investigation of the moment-deformation behavior of biaxially loaded L-shaped short columns were undertaken. Four 1/2 scaled specimens were tested till failure. Moment-curvature and load-deflection curves were developed from the experimental and the analytical results. The analytical results were obtained using a computer program developed by Hsu (1). From the investigation it is deduced that the computer program developed by Hsu (1) can be used to find the ultimate strength, the moment-deformation characteristics, the stress and the strain distributions across the section of L-shaped, biaxially loaded column with large and small eccentricities.

Book Behavior of Thin walled Channel Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending and Compression

Download or read book Behavior of Thin walled Channel Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending and Compression written by Subash Yalamarthy and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next to rectangular, circular and L shapes, Channel section may be the most frequently encountered reinforced concrete columns since they can be used as box wall for elevators. Nevertheless, information about the load deformation behavior is not generally available to structural engineers. Most of the investigations have been emphasized on the ultimate strength of column sections under combined biaxial bending and axial compression and the resulting interaction surface. No attention is paid to load deformation behavior. Current code provisions do not provide adequate guidelines for assessing the strength and ductility of biaxially-loaded reinforced concrete columns. Therefore, this investigation is aimed at an experimental and analytical study of the behavior of biaxially-loaded channel- shaped short columns as the applied load is increased monotonically from zero to failure. For the test purpose four reinforced concrete Channel shaped columns of nearly half the size of the true specimens were casted and tested till failure. Moment-Curvature and Load Deflection curves obtained from testing channel section were compared with the results from a computer program developed by Hsu1 and were found to be in excellent agreement. In addition a computer program was developed to calculate the ultimate flexural capacity of cracked arbitrary concrete sections under axial load and biaxial bending based on the Brondum-Nielsen s paper.

Book Behavior of Square and L shaped Slender Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending and Axial Compression

Download or read book Behavior of Square and L shaped Slender Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending and Axial Compression written by Wen Hu Tsao and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical analysis was developed to evaluate the complete load-deflection and moment-curvature relationships for square and L-shaped slender reinforced concrete columns subjected to biaxial bending and axial load. This computer model can be used for any cross section geometry and material properties of normal concrete. The analysis was based on a deformation control and both the ascending and descending branches of curves can be studied. The finite difference method was introduced to calculate the deflections which satisfy the compatibility equations. Six square slender columns and eight L-shaped slender columns were tested to compare their experimental load-deformation results with the analytical results derived from the theoretical studies. A satisfactory agreement was achieved for the present study. The results of present study can be used for future design reference.

Book Behavior of Tee shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected to Biaxial Bending and Axial Compression

Download or read book Behavior of Tee shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected to Biaxial Bending and Axial Compression written by Antoun Romanos Nader and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation deals with the effect of eccentric loading on the moment-curvature relationship of reinforced concrete tee columns. The test program consisted of two series of tee-shaped reinforced concrete columns, loaded biaxially at constant angle from the principle axes. Their end conditions were assumed to be pinned-ended. Loads, at constant rate, were gradually applied until failure. At each loading stage, measurements were made for the strains and deflections at the mid span section. The experimental and theoretical results of the load- deformation and moment-curvature were compared and found that the analytical approach proposed by Hsu is applicable to irregular sections such as tee columns, under small and large eccentricities, but tended to underestimate slightly the axial load and the moment-curvatures at failure.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book Strength of High Strength Concrete Columns Under Eccentric Compression

Download or read book Strength of High Strength Concrete Columns Under Eccentric Compression written by R. H. Basappa Setty and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research work involved a study of behaviour and strength of eccentrically loaded High Strength Concrete columns. The research comprised experimental and analytical components. With regard to experimental work, twelve columns were manufactured and tested to failure. All columns were rectangular in cross-section with 300 mm x 100 mm as dimensions. The test specimens were loaded about the minor axis. The ratio of longitudinal reinforcement was either 1.47% (4 - 12 mm diameter bars) or 2.2% (6 - 12 mm diameter bars). The lateral reinforcement was in the form of rectangular closed ties made of 6 mm wires (W6). The spacing of ties was generally 50 mm, but, was decreased to 30 mm, at either ends to avoid premature failure.

Book Behaviour of High Strength Concrete Columns Under Axial Load and Uniaxial Bending

Download or read book Behaviour of High Strength Concrete Columns Under Axial Load and Uniaxial Bending written by Natalie Anne Lloyd and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to significant economic and structural advantages associated with the use of high strength concrete in compression members, the application of high strength concrete in columns and core walls is increasing. The advantages of using high strength concrete are well documented. Utilisation of high strength concrete leads to a reduction in column size. However, this results in an increase in slenderness of columns which would otherwise be stocky when built using low strength concrete. In addition, columns are rarely designed for pure axial load yet most research to date has focussed on high strength colurnns subject to concentric compression. Very limited data is available on columns subject to eccentric compression. The present research therefore focussed on slender columns subject to eccentric compression.

Book Normal strength and High strength Concrete Columns Under Cyclic Axial Load and Biaxial Moment

Download or read book Normal strength and High strength Concrete Columns Under Cyclic Axial Load and Biaxial Moment written by Mehdi Zarei and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technique of using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) materials to repair and strengthen various concrete members has become popular in the structural retrofitting field as an effective way to enhance the strength and ductility of concrete members due to its superior mechanical properties. In this study a method was introduced to study the behavior of concrete columns with and without CFRP jackets under constant axial load and variable lateral load. The lateral load was applied monotonically and cyclically. To predict the behavior of concrete columns under monotonic and cyclic compressive loadings, a computer code was developed to produce the moment-curvature diagram for concrete sections. The moment-curvature diagram was then input in SAP2000 to study the behavior of reinforced concrete columns. The result of this analysis was found to correlate with experimental data well. The behavior of high-strength concrete (HSC) columns having various properties and subjected to a variety of loading conditions has been the topic of considerable investigation. Of particular significance in this area is the behavior of HSC columns under cyclic compressive load with bidirectional eccentricity. For the experimental investigation, tests of six square slender HSC columns were conducted under stroke control to achieve both ascending and descending branches of the load-deformation curves. Analysis of HSC columns subjected to cyclic axial compression with bidirectional eccentricity was approached from the standpoint of a three-dimensional problem. A computer program based on the extended finite segment method and accounting for geometrical nonlinearity has been proposed here to predict the load-deflection curves of HSC columns under cyclical loading. The HSC stress-strain relationship obtained by parametric study and experimental investigation into the behavior of concrete under cyclical load history has been incorporated into the numerical procedure. The presented computer analysis results have been compared with the experimental data, and a satisfactory agreement was attained for both the ascending and descending branches of the load-deformation curves.
