Download or read book Beyond Webcams written by Ken Goldberg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design, function, and challenges of online telerobotic systems. Remote-controlled robots were first developed in the 1940s to handle radioactive materials. Trained experts now use them to explore deep in sea and space, to defuse bombs, and to clean up hazardous spills. Today robots can be controlled by anyone on the Internet. Such robots include cameras that not only allow us to look, but also go beyond Webcams: they enable us to control the telerobots' movements and actions. This book summarizes the state of the art in Internet telerobots. It includes robots that navigate undersea, drive on Mars, visit museums, float in blimps, handle protein crystals, paint pictures, and hold human hands. The book describes eighteen systems, showing how they were designed, how they function online, and the engineering challenges they meet.

Book excerpt: Mechatronics, a synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic and computing engineering technologies, is a truly multidisciplinary approach to engineering. New products based on mechatronic principles are demonstrating reduced mechanical complexity, increased performance and often previously impossible capabilities. This book contains the papers presented at the UK Mechatronics Forum's 6th International Conference, held in Skövde, Sweden, in September 1998. Many of these high-quality papers illustrate the tremendous influence of mechatronics on such areas as manufacturing machinery, automotive engineering, textiles manufacture, robotics, and real-time control and vision systems. There are also papers describing developments in sensors, actuators, control and data processing techniques, such as fuzzy logic and neural networks, all of which have practical application to mechatronic systems.

Book Passivity Based Control and Estimation in Networked Robotics

Download or read book Passivity Based Control and Estimation in Networked Robotics written by Takeshi Hatanaka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting the control of networked robotic systems, this book synthesizes a unified passivity-based approach to an emerging cross-disciplinary subject. Thanks to this unified approach, readers can access various state-of-the-art research fields by studying only the background foundations associated with passivity. In addition to the theoretical results and techniques, the authors provide experimental case studies on testbeds of robotic systems including networked haptic devices, visual robotic systems, robotic network systems and visual sensor network systems. The text begins with an introduction to passivity and passivity-based control together with the other foundations needed in this book. The main body of the book consists of three parts. The first examines how passivity can be utilized for bilateral teleoperation and demonstrates the inherent robustness of the passivity-based controller against communication delays. The second part emphasizes passivity’s usefulness for visual feedback control and estimation. Convergence is rigorously proved even when other passive components are interconnected. The passivity approach is also differentiated from other methodologies. The third part presents the unified passivity-based control-design methodology for multi-agent systems. This scheme is shown to be either immediately applicable or easily extendable to the solution of various motion coordination problems including 3-D attitude/pose synchronization, flocking control and cooperative motion estimation. Academic researchers and practitioners working in systems and control and/or robotics will appreciate the potential of the elegant and novel approach to the control of networked robots presented here. The limited background required and the case-study work described also make the text appropriate for and, it is hoped, inspiring to students.

Book Haptics for Teleoperated Surgical Robotic Systems

Download or read book Haptics for Teleoperated Surgical Robotic Systems written by M. Tavakoli and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important obstacle in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is the significant degradation of haptic feedback (sensation of touch) to the surgeon about surgical instrument's interaction with tissue. This monograph is concerned with devices and methods required for incorporating haptic feedback in master-slave robotic MIS systems. In terms of devices, novel mechanisms are designed including a surgical end-effector (slave) with full force sensing capabilities and a surgeon-robot interface (master) with full force feedback capabilities. Using the master-slave systems, various haptic teleoperation control schemes are compared in terms of stability and performance, and passivity-based time delay compensation for haptic teleoperation over a long distance is investigated. The monograph also compares haptic feedback with visual feedback and with substitution for haptic feedback by other sensory cues in terms of surgical task performance.

Book Stabilization and Control of Teleoperation Systems with Time Delays

Download or read book Stabilization and Control of Teleoperation Systems with Time Delays written by Yongjun Hou and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A control scheme for teleoperation systems with time delay is developed based on the concept of passivity. This control method requires neither detailed knowledge of the manipulator systems nor the mathematical models of the environments, and it is applicable for any time delays. The main contribution of this method is that it is less conservative than the traditional passivity based method. In this method, the passivity controller only operates when the system loses passivity, while in a traditional passivity formulation; the controller works at all times during operation and thus adversely affect the performance of the system. Using the proposed control scheme, a sub-system is defined that is composed of the communication channel, slave robot and the manipulated environment. This sub system is treated as a one-port network component, and passivity theory is applied to this component to assure stability. The energy flowing into the one-port network, in the form of the control command and the force feedback, is monitored. A passivity regulator is activated to maintain the passivity of the network by modifying the feedback force to the master, and thus adjust the energy exchange between the master and the communication channel. When this method is applied, only the information at the interface between the master manipulator and the communication channel is collected and observed, there is no need for accurate or detailed knowledge of the structure or timing of the communication channel. The method can make the system lossless regardless of the feedback force, the coordinating force controlling the slave joint motions or the contact force. The approach can stabilize the system regardless of the time delay, discontinuities with environmental contact, or discretization of the physical plant. It will pose no problem when the environmental contact force is directly fed back. The results of this work show that it is advantageous to use the measured environmental force as the feedback, providing superior performance for free motion and more realistic haptic feedback for the operator from the remote environment. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed control scheme.

Book Low Complexity Controllers for Time Delay Systems

Download or read book Low Complexity Controllers for Time Delay Systems written by Alexandre Seuret and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the newly established series Advances in Delays and Dynamics (ADD@S) provides a collection of recent results on the design and analysis of Low Complexity Controllers for Time Delay Systems. A widely used indirect method to obtain low order controllers for time delay systems is to design a controller for the reduced order model of the plant. In the dual indirect approach, an infinite dimensional controller is designed first for the original plant model; then, the controller is approximated by keeping track of the degradation in performance and stability robustness measures. The present volume includes new techniques used at different stages of the indirect approach. It also includes new direct design methods for fixed structure and low order controllers. On the other hand, what is meant by low complexity controller is not necessarily low order controller. For example, Smith predictor or similar type of controllers include a copy of the plant internally in the controller, so they are technically infinite dimensional. However, they have very nice numerical properties from the point of reliable implementation. Therefore, such predictor-based controllers are considered as low complexity. This book includes new predictor-based design techniques, with several application examples.
