Book Chemistry and Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in the Environment

Download or read book Chemistry and Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in the Environment written by H.J. Bloemen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the occurrence and behaviour of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is increasing due to their adverse effects on the environment and human health. It is essential that information is made available on the various aspects of research on VOCs to enable better understanding and control of the various environmental and human health threats. The information in this book will be used to improve communication and understanding of the various approaches. In particular the potential and limitations of the described analytical methods will be essential in defining environmental studies and interpreting the results.

Book Organic Compounds in Soils Sediments Sludges

Download or read book Organic Compounds in Soils Sediments Sludges written by T Roy Crompton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing awareness of the effects of pollutants in the eco-system and on the development of suitable methods of analysis has stimulated a lot of research recently. This volume comprehensively discusses the range of methods available for the analysis and determination of organic compounds in soils, river and marine sediments and industrial sludges. A review is provided of the instrumentation used in soil and sediment laboratories and an indication of the types of organics that can be determined by each technique. Subsequent chapters discuss the analysis of various types of organics in a logical and systematic manner. Guidance is provided on the applicability of techniques in certain environments, the advantages and disadvantages of using one method over another, likely interference, the sensitivity of particular techniques, and detection limits. The work will be of interest to agricultural chemists, agriculturists concerned with ways in which organic chemicals used in crop or soil treatment permeate the ecosystem and to biologists and scientists involved in fish, plant and insect life. Toxicologists, public health workers, oceanographers, and environmentalists will also find the book beneficial.

Book A New Approach to Evaluating Pre analysis Holding Times for the Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds in Soil

Download or read book A New Approach to Evaluating Pre analysis Holding Times for the Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds in Soil written by AD. Hewitt and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the absence of volatilization losses, the short-term concentration stabilities of benzene, toluene, trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, and trichloroethylene were assessed in soil subsamples. Previous holding time studies for this matrix failed to eliminate volatilization as a variable, making them difficult to interpret. Here, vapor-fortified soil subsamples held in sealed glass ampoules for 14 days at 22°C experienced appreciable reductions in benzene and toluene concentrations, presumably attributable to biodegradation. When the same fortified soil was held as a subsample for either headspace or purge-and-trap analyses, it showed an appreciable reduction in toluene and a complete loss of benzene over a 14-day holding period at 4°C. In contrast, fortified soils held in sealed glass ampoules at 4°C, or dispersed in methanol and held at 22°C, showed no significant analyte losses over periods of 20 and 98 days, respectively.
