Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wales is a country where small in beautiful, a cultural tradition rooted in the austerity and erudition of the Celtic saints, a tradition more confirmed than repudiated by the Reformation and is best appreciated by lovers of small things. The delights of Wales are understated and cumulative: small country churches rather than great city cathedrals, a labyrinth of byeays away form the few highways, details of vernacular achitecture rather than grand edifices - Edward I's thirteenth-century castles being the exception that proves the rule.

Book excerpt: It was dark; the air was suffocating, smothering and oppressive. Heavy, laboured breathing could be heard – his own - and somewhere behind, the sound of a pursuer..... Abruptly the walls opened out and he rolled forward and lay prostrate, exhausted, spent. He rolled over. Piercing red eyes looked down into his and a sinister voice whispered “so, you have returned have you, boy?” A month has passed since Paul was in Elenair but after an accident he returns to find that eight years have passed there. His head injury means that he cannot remember where he is from or who he is. The people of Elenair have become suspicious and fearful so Paul, as a stranger, is called before the Council of Elders to answer for himself. It is his old friend Gaius who accounts for him and helps him to remember who he really is. Together they are sent out by Erendor on a new quest; to rescue their friend Joy, a talking horse, who has been stolen by Elevion’s new workers, the Sendom and to stop their old foe Elevion poisoning the land. Before Paul can go home he also has to reclaim a personal item stolen from him by Elevion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you pronounce biopic, synod, and Breughel? - and why? Do our cake and archaic sound the same? Where does the stress go in stalagmite? What's odd about the word epergne? Pontcysyllte is obviously Welsh, but Penge is Welsh too! How cool is Caol in the Highlands of Scotland? What can Wesley's hymns tell us about sound change in English? How do people pronounce Wrocław in Poland? How can anyone manage to say Gdynia as just two syllables? Why is the village of Frith in the island of Montserrat usually pronounced as if spelt Frits? What embarrassing faux pas in English did a Russian conglomerate make? Should I bild a cubbard instead of building a cupboard? How should we capitalize an exclamation mark, and why might we need to? What's a depressor consonant? As a finale, the author writes a letter to his 16-year-old self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century before Jack the Ripper there was the London Monster, whose knife attacks on women caused unprecedented alarm, terror, and uproar. Through chance combined with vigilante effort, a young Welshman, Rhynwick Williams, was arrested as the Monster and committed to prison after a sensational trial at the Old Bailey. However, doubts about Williams' guilt persisted, and some writers asserted that there never was a Monster at all. Over 200 years later, Bondeson (author of A Cabinet of Medical Curiosities and The Feejee Mermaid and Other Essays in Natural and Unnatural History) unearthed new clues to this fascinating case, which lies somewhere between fact and urban legend.
