Danach werde ich auf Hannah Arendts Definition der Politik angesichts ihrer Vorstellungen über die Voraussetzungen für Politik eingehen und ihre Antwort auf die Frage, was Politik sei, erläutern. Dies führt zur Frage nach dem Sinn der Politik, die für Arendts Politikverständnis begriffsbestimmend ist. Nach den Darstellungen zu Schmitts und Arendts grundsätzlichen Auffassungen von Politik, werde ich den Vergleich zum liberalen Politikverständnis im Zusammenhang mit der Liberalismuskritik der beiden Autoren ziehen, um mit eigenen Beurteilungen der Definitionen durch Arendt und Schmitt zu schließen. Der mehrdimensionale Begriff der Politik im üblichen Gebrauch der Politikwissenschaft schlägt für dessen Verständnis eine normativ-inhaltliche (Policy), eine prozessuale (Politics) und eine institutionelle (Polity) Dimension vor. Mit der Wortherkunft aus dem Griechischen polis, was mit Stadt, Gemeinde, Burg übersetzt werden kann, verweist die Politik ursprünglich insbesondere auf den Zuständigkeitsbereich innerer Verhältnisse und die Organisation, wie Erhaltung eines Staates oder kleineren Institutionen. Häufig wird im Sprachgebrauch der Begriff der Politik und des Politischen in den Zusammenhang mit Macht gebracht. Niccolo Macchiavelli prägte ein Politikverständnis, das im theoretischen Sinn die Lehre vom Machterwerb und deren Erhaltung und im praktischen erfolgreichen Machtgebrauch beschreibt.

Jahrhunderts ist eine entsprechende Erfahrung in dieser Sphäre von Nöten, damit nur passende Entscheidungen für den ,sich in der Dienstleistungsgesellschaft befindenden, modernen Bürger getroffen werden können. Die gesammelten Erfahrungen aus den letzten Jahren und somit auch aus den hervorgegangenen Regierungssystemen, begonnen bei Monarchie und konstitutioneller Monarchie, parlamentarischer Demokratie und Diktatur, haben uns Menschen allerlei Fähigkeiten verliehen, um eine standhafte Regierung aufzustellen. Die Politik war und ist schon immer ein bedeutender Aspekt eines Staates gewesen, der sich somit auch schon sehr vielen Definitionsversuchen unterziehen musste. Jedoch ist es aus diesem Grunde noch nicht gelungen den Begriff der Politik in einen einheitlichen Rahmen zu bringen. In Folge dessen wird dieses Essay mehrere Thesen von bedeutenden Politiktheoretikern aus verschiedenen, zeitlichen Epochen heranziehen, um daraufhin ein plausibles und wohl begründetes Urteil abgeben können. Hierzu werden diese Thesen mit der eigentlichen Hauptthese des Essays gegenuebergestellt. Die These, die im Folgenden übeprüft werden soll, basiert sich auf die heute meist verwendete Definiton der Politik, die diese öffentliche Sphäre in drei Dimensionen unterteilt, nämlich polity (die institutionelle Struktur der Politik), politics (die Konsens- und Konfliktprozesse, die später in politische Entscheidungen geformt werden) und policies (alle politische Entscheidungen). Als ein Teil des öffentlichen Lebens, der das Zusammenleben der Menschen in einem Staat und die Beziehungen der Staaten untereinander bestimmt, lässt sich die Politik nicht mit ,,dem Politischen” gleichsetzen. Um das Politische zu definieren braucht man zwei Seiten, also eine Gruppenbildung, in der eine Abgrenzung bestimmter Gruppe von den Anderen erfolgt. Dadurch entsteht ein Konflikt, der eine Voraussetzung des Politischen ist. Das heißt, im Unterschied zu der Politik, könnte alles politierst werden und daraus folgend auch politisch werden.
