Book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Albert Russell Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Agriculture This book is designed for the purpose of introducing the study of \a.griculture into the seventh and eighth grades of our elementary schools. It may also meet a need in some of the smaller high schools and in ungraded Special and private schools. When the pupil comes to well-developed high-school work, he will need a more detailed and specific text. The book is founded on the suggestions in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Education in Schools for Rural Communi ties, Of the National Educational Association. That Committee recommended for the school years 6 to 8, four sets of subjects as follows: first half year, the affairs Of agriculture; second half year, the soil; second year, farming schemes and crops; third year, ani mals. A condensation Of this plan into a two-year scheme has been attempted in the present volume. It has been the aim Of the author to cover the work very largely in a nature-study Spirit, by which it is meant that the pupil Shall be brought into as close touch as possible with the actual farms, soils, crops, animals, and affairs. The problems are intended to set the pupils at work on their own account rather than to enable them to answer questions that may be suggested in the text. It is, of course, essential to practical school conditions that there shall be reading-matter and recitation-matter in the book. Perhaps Part I, dealing with the general agricultural situation, may be used as a series Of introductory reading and discussion exercises, the actual work with subject-matter to begin with Part II. The open book method of teaching, now used successfully in many schools for history and geography, might be employed advantageously with this text, especially in schools in which nature-study receives little attention. It is assumed that the teacher will see that the pupils work out the problems, Or as many of them as have useful application to the affairs of the particular community. It is to be hoped that there will be a school-garden on the premises, or that small areas may be set aside at the homes of the pupils, on which many of the sug gestions in the book may be worked out personally. It is specially to be desired that the parents be brought into the work, in order that the agricultural affairs of the community may be related to the school. Therefore, a large number of problems have been pre sented with this end in view, the expectation being that the pupil will ask the parents for the proper solution of the questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Agriculture, Comprising a Concise History of Its Origin and Progress: The Present The origin of this art is lost among the fables of antiquity, and we have to regret that, in the present state of knowlefige, we are even ignorant of the time when the plough was invented, and of the name and condition of the inventorf' When, there fore, we speak of the beginning of the art, we but al lude to certain appearances which indicate its exist ence, and the employment given by it to the minds, as well as to the hands of mankind. Such were the artificial canals and lakes of Egypt. Menaced at one time by a redundancy of water, and at an other by its scarcity or want, the genius of that very extraordinary people could not but employ it self, promptly and strenuously, in remedying these evils, and eventually in converting them into bene fits, and hence it was, that, when other parts of the world exhibited little more of agricultural knowl edge than appertains to the state of nature'irna gined by philosophers, the Egyptians thoroughly nu derstood and skilfully practised tflzgation, that most. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amours's Hand Book of Agriculture Many factors are back of this new interest in agriculture. In the first place, all are beginning to see that agriculture is the only vocation that can maintain an independent existence. For in it, men can find their food, clothing and shelter, and with these life can be sustained. In the second place, all are beginning to understand the importance of the soil as our universal source of supplies. We are beginning to realize that the soil can be wasted or it can be conserved in a state of permanent fertility, and that universal interest may set machinery in motion to preserve it permanently before the thinning process has gone too far. Book Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Classic Reprint written by Charles S. Plumb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Agricultural education under these conditions lagged, and how to encourage interest became a serious problem with the colleges. Educators insisted that the teaching should be largely based on pure science, and it was Often difficult for the students to see the application. Recognizing this lack Of interest, a few Western colleges conceived the plan Of giving short winter courses of a popular nature, in which practical laboratory instruction should be given. Work in dairying, horticulture, and live stock judg ing first received attention. This practical training was most favorably regarded by the students. These winter courses grew rapidly in popularity, and paved the way for more attractive forms of instruction for the regular students. Through this medium of the short winter Course, both interest and attendance in the agricultural colleges rapidly grew. New courses of study were established, more buildings and equipment were required, and then agricultural education sprang into popularity. The production of new types of text books, on subjects heretofore undiscussed in pedagogical form, logically followed in this evolution in agricultural edu cation. During this movement in behalf Of rural uplift, a few progressive men urged the importance of agricultural educa tion in the country schools of higher grade. This resulted in establishing agricultural schools Of secondary grade in different parts of the United States, both North and South. During the past few years, country life has become popular. As a result, there is a widespread movement in behalf of agricultural education, and the subject is now being taught in its various phases in many schools all over the land. Recognizing the need of an elementary text book for young people, the author has seen fit to prepare this volume on animal husbandry, the first of its kind devoted to this special field. It is his earnest hope that such lessons as either teacher or pupil shall find within these pages, may result in a desire for yet wider knowledge of and a more sympathetic interest in our farm animals. Book Lectures on the History of Agriculture and Rural Economics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the History of Agriculture and Rural Economics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Forsyth Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Agriculture and Rural Economics Within Egypt proper there is an area of about square miles or a little more than Ohio and Illinois combined. In 1887 it contained a population of 5 1-2 million people, and its principal export was cotton. This valley is watered by the Nile, which rises in the lakes Victoria and Alberta. The former con tains an area of square miles, - almost exactly that of the state of Ohio, and is situated 1 15' south of the equator. The Nile empties into the Mediterranean sea at Rosetta 'and Dami etta at 310 35'north. The Nile is said to traverse 4100 miles in going this distance, as compared with the Mississippi, which traverses 3000 miles. As the crows fly, the distance from Vic toria N yanza to the Mediterranean is 2000 miles, while from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico is about 1300 miles. The val ley of the Nile, however, is not ancient Egypt. The tillable area of Egypt was only about square milesi'or about the size of Belgium and is divided into two portions, the delta and the valley proper. The delta is a triangular area, whose distance between the mouth at Rosetta and Damietta is 120 miles, and whose distance from the branch of the river at Cairo to the sea is about 90 miles, the whole area being estimated at about square miles. This was probably largely a grazing district. The valley extends from Cairo southward about 520 miles to the last of the ten cataracts near which is the town of Assuan, the ancient Syene. The average width of tillable soil on either side does not exceed two miles. This area occupies about square miles and is generally recognized as the seat of the an cient civilization. One of the minor districts of Egypt is the Fayoom. This inter esting district contains Lake Moeris, which is a natural basin into which the water of the Nile has been fed by a canal eight miles long, and various sub-canals water this district, thus bringing into use some square miles of territory. This is one of the most stupendous works from an agricultural stand point, that has ever been performed in Egypt, and was supposed to have been done in its early history.
