He follows his parents to the Los Angeles area, where the adventure of his life begins. There he meets Susan Giles, a light in his life during the more innocent time of high school. They become an item, and she returns to his life post-college when he is dealing with three adversaries and his own internal struggles. During the eleventh grade, Phillip also meets retired fireman William Jones. William became a positive influence in other people’s lives after suffering a huge loss and trying to make the right decisions going forward. He commits his retirement years to reaching out to inner-city juveniles and later becomes a good friend to Phillip. Phillip learns from William and must later grow in his own faith to complete the challenges set before him. This is a story of the shadows of strife being overcome, and virtue left standing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 11, 2009 I received a Barna Update e mail stating, "A new study from the Barna Group identifies an underlying reason why there is little progress in helping people develop spiritually: many churchgoers and clergy struggle to articulate a basic understanding of spiritual maturity. People aspire to be spiritually mature, but they don't know what it means." This book specifically defines five levels of spiritual growth and maturity. I have never seen a book about spiritual growth that described what spiritual growth looks like. That is why we have the problem studied by Barna. How can people tell whether they are making any progress? How much further do they have to go to reach full maturity? I answer those questions. In this book I teach people to grow from having enough faith to believe that Jesus died for them, to having enough faith they believe they would live for him. Readers will be challenged to be serious about their pilgrimage of faith which I call a Christian adventure. They will be encouraged to practice holiness and serving others. The theme in this book is that "getting saved" which is level one in my book, is only the beginning for Christians. We need to move on to letting Jesus live in us through a life of service and holiness. Rather than a "How To" book this is a "What's Next" book.

Book Opening the Red Door

Download or read book Opening the Red Door written by John A. Bernbaum and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Berlin Wall fell, a group of Christian colleges in the U.S. seized the opportunity to begin strategic faculty and student exchanges with universities inside the Soviet Union. They could not have foreseen the doors that would open next. During a 1990 visit to Russia, John Bernbaum and his colleagues received a surprising invitation from a Russian government official: come help build a faith-based university in Moscow. Thus, after seventy years of fierce religious persecution under communism, the Russian-American Christian University (RACU) was born. In Opening the Red Door, Bernbaum presents an insider's account of the rise and fall of a Russian-American partnership. As a founder and later president of RACU, Bernbaum offers a ground-level perspective on Russia’s post-communist transition and the construction of a cultural-educational bridge between the two superpowers. He describes how American RACU staff worked to understand Russian history and culture—including the nation's rich spiritual heritage—so they could support their new Russian friends in rebuilding an educational system and a society. He documents the story of the first private Christian liberal arts university to be accredited in Russia's history, from its first steps, through its major successes, to its facing increasing opposition during the Putin era. Opening the Red Door offers unique insight not only into Russian culture and post–Cold War history but also traces the dynamics within international educational institutions and partnerships. When he first traveled to Russia, Bernbaum writes, he thought of it as a nation of mystery. But after more than twenty-five years of work there, he believes Russia can be understood. His journey of understanding will prove instructive to educators, administrators, students, missionaries, and anyone interested in international relations.
