Book Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians 1892

Download or read book Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians 1892 written by Catholic Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians, 1892: What Is Being Accomplished by Means of the Annual Collection Taken Up for Our Missions The vast amount of good that is being. Done by means of the Negro and Indian fund 13 known only to those who are thoroughly acquainted with the actual state of Catholicity among the Negroes and Indians. Each recurring apportionment of the annual collection becomes the foundation of some new enterprise; churches, schools and hospitals have been founded on the aid extended by the Commission and look to it for future encouragement. The good work Is spreading and needs, especially at the present time, all the stimulus that can be git/en to it in the shape of moral and financial support. A glance at the financial statement for thel last five years shows an almost steady falling off In the amounts contributed for this work, the total footing up 70 and the collection for 1891 standing 14 less than 111 1887. This is a rather saddening fact when we have such a Work before us, and when the Rt. Rev. Bishop of Little Rock tells us that $18, of Northern money has been spent on the colored people of Since the war, by Protestants and Protestant churches. A goodly sum of money has however been contributed and great good has been ae' complished. Among the reports from the Negro missions, those from the dioceses of Covington, Galveston and Natchitoches are particularly encouraging. In many other places real substantial work has been done. The Bishops of Mobile and Little Rock say that they feel they are sowing the good seed though no very striking results have yet been secured. Archbishop Janssens is accomplishing much against very discouraging odds. In the face of disheartening indifi'erence and har rassing opposition as in more favored spots, we everywhere, both in the Negro and Indian missions, come upon a courageous, simpleminded. Devotedness that can have its principle only In faith and the love of God and of souls. The Bishop of Jamestown writes a vigorous letter of appeal In behalf of his Indians, and among the many interesting details' concerning Indian mission work nothing will be found more readable than a letter from Alaska written to his brother by Rev. William H. Judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Wonderland to Alaska The readers of the times, while they will be pleased to hear of the safe return of our esteemed townsman, Rev. Wm. H. Myers, from his trip to Alaska, will no doubt be sorry to miss a continuation of the graphically-written'letters of travel which he has contributed to the columns of this paper for several months past. These letters lhaye called out many com plimentary expressions from among a large circle of admlring readers, and the general consensus of Opinion is that in point of close observation, fine descriptive power, felicity of expression, the apt use of his torical incidents with which the writer ih terwove his interesting narrative, these letters possess a value and literary attract iveness that entitles them to more than the mere passing interest that attaches to a newspaper publication. They should be collected and printed in book-form, as they would adorn any library. - Eu'. Times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Days: How the Call Came, How the Work Grew at Home If a combined history of the Women's Missionary Societies of all the Churches throughout the world were written, it would be found to contain, not merely an epitome of effort made, and work accomplished by a department of the Church, but a revelation of the new life, the expanding vision that came to Christian womanhood during the latter decades of the nineteenth century. Since the organization of the first Society in America, in 1861, which was quickly followed by many others, the women of Christendom have come into great possessions. Their ideals have changed; individual responsibility for the betterment of the world, both at home and abroad, has been borne in upon them, and the growing power of being able to bring things to pass, of planning and of being responsible for the carrying of such plans to successful completion, has given to them an added dignity, a new courage, a more intelligent devotion, and a deeper spiritual life. The women of the Orient are also entering into their inheritance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kin-Da-Shon's Wife: An Alaskan Story To those who know Alaska only as it 3, and to those who know it not at all, some explanations may be necessary; such explanations will be no less appreciated by our best-knowing and best-loving friends. The writing of this simple story. Begun nine years ago, is not the result of an ambition on the part of the writer to be known as a novelist - let me tell you a little of how and why it was written. Two hundred and fifty miles lay between the furthermost Protestant mission of Alaska and the country of the Chilkats be yond, when we went early in 188! To take to them the good news and to make our home among them. A white trader with a native wife had preceded us by several months; with this single exception we were the only whites in the country. The Chilkats were the master tribe among the Kling-gets, hold ing themselves aloof from their poor relations and priding themselves on their rank and their adherence to old customs. They were regarded with awe and fear by the other tribes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
