Download or read book This Is Not Civilization written by Robert Rosenberg and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2005-04-12 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Prague and White Teeth, This Is Not Civilization is an inspired, sweeping debut novel that hopscotches from Arizona to Central Asia to Istanbul with a well-meaning, if misguided, young Peace Corps volunteer. Jeff Hartig lies at the center of this modern take on the American-abroad tale, which brings together four people from vastly different backgrounds, each struggling with the push and pull of home. A young Apache, Adam Dale, forsakes the reservation for the promise of a world he knows little about. Anarbek Tashtanaliev, of post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, operates a cheese factory that no longer produces cheese. Nazira, his daughter, strains against the confines of their village's age-old traditions. With captivating insight, realism, and humor, Robert Rosenberg delivers a sensitive story about the cost of trying to do good in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trips out of Civilization is comprised of five original thrillers, all packed with action, sudden twists and psychological revelations. “The Crossbow” takes place in the Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, far away from tourists and beaten paths. “A Mathematically Precise Curve” invites the reader to the most spectacular part of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. “Arawak” offers an unusual adventure on an uninhabited island in the Bahamian Archipelago. “Lynx” is staged in the wilderness of Northern Quebec. “Trio” unfolds as a fly-in trip from Vancouver, deep in one almost unexplored region of British Columbia. All these stories have several features in common – a rich cast of characters is searching for real, still untamed Nature, fights for survival, reflects on living conditions of our age, explores our instincts in extreme situations, when human and animal worlds collide. Nature, pure and crisp, because not tainted by civilization, becomes a catalyst and an active player in human dramas.

Where The Lord Protector watches over them. Where they are free from vices like lust, gluttony, and family. Eric XXII is a model citizen. So he's shocked when, one day, he's kidnapped by a secret society and shown that his world is not all as it seems—and that he has powers beyond those of a normal human. As he tries to sort out the truths from the lies, he's thrust into a war of survival between this tiny sect of superhuman, true-believers and the unlimited juggernaut of Civilization itself. If that weren't enough, Eric discovers romantic feelings for the first time. For Bria. She's brilliant. She's irresistible. And she's taken... by the deadliest insurgent of all. Insurgents of Civilization was the first novel written by author Richard L. Sanders (The Phoenix Conspiracy) and it and its sequel, Insurgents of Wasteland, were completed in 2004, when the author was only 17 years old.
Download or read book Readings in Russian Civilization Volume III written by Thomas Riha and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This new and enlarged version of Readings in Russian Civilization is the result of fairly extensive revisions. There are now 72 instead of 64 items; 20 of the selections are new. The first volume has undergone the least change with 3 new items, of which 2 appear in English for the first time. In the second volume there are 6 new items; all of them appear in English for the first time. The third volume has undergone the greatest revision, with 11 new items, of which 6 are newly translated from the Russian. It is the editor's hope that items left out in the new edition will not be sorely missed, and that the new selections will turn out to be useful and illuminating. The aim, throughout, has been to cover areas of knowledge and periods which had been neglected in the first edition, and to include topics which are important in the study of the Russian past and present. "The bibliographical headnotes have been enlarged, with the result that there are now approximately twice as many entries as in the old edition. New citations include not only works which have appeared since 1963, but also older books and articles which have come to the editor's attention."—From the Editor's Preface ". . . a judicious combination of seminal works and more recent commentaries that achieves the editor's purpose of stimulating curiosity and developing a point of view."—C. Bickford O'Brien, The Russian Review "These three volumes cover quite well the main periods of Russian civilization. The choice of the articles and other material is made by a competent and unbiased scholar."—Ivan A. Lopatin, Professor of Asian and Slavic Studies, University of Southern California

Download or read book Suppose We Let Civilization Begin written by Richard W. Wetherill and published by The Alpha Publishing House. This book was released on 2008-09-29 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are told that our various wars were fought to make the world safe for democracy. But unsafe conditions still prevail. Individuals and groups keep seizing unfair advantages to the detriment of others who keep trying to fight back by doing the same thing. Subtle, unobserved dishonesty is involved. Such dishonesty is the natural consequence of reasoning from urges based on personal motives. The remedy is to reason from reality: fill the need of the situation. In this book, Wetherill points out the importance of absolute honesty and shows how to identify and drop dishonest rationalizations. There are four experiential articles also included that were written by people who have described the application of the law of absolute right in their daily lives. Introduction: By applying what is said in this section, the members of a group of young people stopped their involvement in typical teenage trouble over smoking, drinking, drugs, and sex. The changes came one by one, but each change was sudden and effortless and proved to be lasting. Preteen children also reduced their misbehavior sufficiently that they no longer needed scoldings or punishments. Instead, calling their attention to misbehavior proved sufficient to end it because the kids themselves had determined that they should behave themselves in a civilized manner. Parents and school authorities were delighted. Numerous adults adopted and applied the same information in their vocational and private lives and ended their arguments. Anyone who thoughtfully and honestly considers all the details presently is able to understand why. At first some of the information may seem too good to be truebut that condition passes as soon as the information is fully and correctly understood.
