Book Beethoven s Letters 1790 1826 Volume 1 Illustrated

Download or read book Beethoven s Letters 1790 1826 Volume 1 Illustrated written by Ludwig van Beethoven and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publisher presents the entirety of Beethoven's Letters in two volumes, inclusive of the musical staves which the legendary composer appended to his personal correspondences. The first volume of Ludwig van Beethoven's letters covers the period from his youth as an ambitious and fledgling young talent living in Vienna, to his peak years wherein he saw musical composition not merely as a career, but as his life's purpose. Early in his career, Beethoven's writings are divided between professional correspondence between members of the aristocracy who sponsored him; and tender missives to young women whom he desired to court; and a few close and valued friends. Reliant on the patronage of the wealthy, it is during this period that Beethoven penned many fine works. Beethoven was however hampered by romantic failures owing to his lower social class - Josephine Brunsvik, an aristocratic woman who reciprocated his advances, is eventually forced to break off the relationship. Later, in confessing his feelings to his 'Immortal Beloved', it is apparent that Beethoven suffered with depression. We see in Beethoven's early correspondences a sensitive and emotional soul, well-versed in the courtly manners of the day. When talking with friends, he demonstrates a keen and sometimes jocular sense of humor, which the translator of this edition - Lady Grace Jane Wallace - did her utmost to maintain in English. This volume closes on a more uplifting note; the mature Beethoven has settled upon his life's purpose of musical composition. His love of music's sublimity has led him to compose soaring and bold symphonic works. However, he also becomes embroiled in a legal struggle regarding his nephew Carl.

Book excerpt: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a prolific letter writer. Often written in great haste - he regularly signed off 'in der Eile' - his correspondence allows us to follow his anxieties and preoccupations. From his first letter, written at the age of thirteen, wherein he declared his lifelong commitment to the craft of music, through the poignant 'Heiligenstadt Testament', up to the final codicil to his will, these documents reveal the human figure behind some of the greatest music ever written. In this two-volume English translation of 1909, John South Shedlock (1843-1919) retains as far as possible the idiosyncratic and error-ridden texts as written by the great composer. Volume 1 covers the years to 1816, and includes the heartbreaking unsent 1802 letter to his brothers in which Beethoven reveals his misery over his increasing deafness and his determination to overcome his physical and emotional weaknesses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passage from the book... In accompanying the present edition of the Letters of Ludwig van Beethoven with a few introductory remarks, I at once acknowledge that the compilation of these letters has cost me no slight sacrifices. I must also, however, mention that an unexpected Christmas donation, generously bestowed on me with a view to further my efforts to promote the science of music, enabled me to undertake one of the journeys necessary for my purpose, and also to complete the revision of the Letters and of the press, in the milder air and repose of a country residence, long since recommended to me for the restoration of my health, undermined by overwork. That, in spite of every effort, I have not succeeded in seeing the original of each letter, or even discovering the place where it exists, may well be excused, taking into consideration the slender capabilities of an individual, and the astonishing manner in which Beethoven's Letters are dispersed all over the world. At the same time, I must state that not only have the hitherto inaccessible treasures of Anton Schindler's "Beethoven's Nachlass" been placed at my disposal, but also other letters from private sources, owing to various happy chances, and the kindness and complaisance of collectors of autographs. I know better, however, than most people--being in a position to do so--that in the present work there can be no pretension to any thing approaching to a complete collection of Beethoven's Letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven's Letters, Vol. 1: A Critical Edition With Explanatory Notes This appears to be the special task of biography to present the man in relation to his times, and to show how far as a whole they are opposed to him, in how far they are favourable to him, and how, if he be an artist, poet, or writer, he re ects them outwardly. Thus wrote Goethe in his Wahrheit und Dichtung, and as regards Beethoven, his letters offer a unique biography, for studying the man in relation to his times, while such works as the Eroica and Choral symphonies certainly re ect them outwardly. We also see clearly from his letters how deeply he was affected by the times. He did not suddenly decide to write a work and dedicate it to Napoleon, for that was his original intention with respect to the Eroica nor did he suddenly think that Schiller's Ode to Joy would be a fine poem to set to music; but the one work was the outcome of strong sympathy with the man whom he thought was about to establish a republican millennium, the other of ardent desire for peace and goodwill to reign upon earth. Reichardt tells us of the ideals after which men were aiming at the end of the eighteenth century. The victories of the republican armies specially impressed Beethoven soon after his arrival in Vienna, for his native country suffered thereby, while the Ode to Joy of Schiller, though the setting was a late one, occupied his thoughts from a very early period. Of the horrors of war he had personal experience. In 1801 we find him taking part in a concert for the benefit of the wounded Austrian soldiers at the battle of Hainau; in 1805, Vienna was occupied by French troops, and again in 1809 the city of Vienna was bombarded and then occupied by Napoleon. The events of 1805 were unfavourable to the success of his opera Fidelio, while those of 1809 greatly worried him What a disturbing, wild life all around me, nothing but drums, cannons, men, misery of all sorts. So he writes in a graphic letter to his publishers, Breitkopf and Haertel (july 26. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a prolific letter writer, with thousands of examples surviving to this day. Often written in great haste - 'in der Eile' was a common sign-off - they allow us to follow the great composer's anxieties and preoccupations, revealing the human figure behind some of the greatest music ever written. Despite the fact that 'many of Beethoven's letters slumber in foreign lands, especially in the unapproachable cabinets of curiosities belonging to various close-fisted English collectors', the German musicologist Ludwig Nohl (1831-85) published his collection of letters in 1865, and this two-volume English translation by Grace Jane Wallace (1804-78) appeared the following year, reflecting the fact that interest in Beethoven had not diminished nearly forty years after his death. Volume 1 includes the letter by the thirteen-year-old Beethoven which declares his life's commitment to the craft of music, and the still poignant 'Heiligenstadt Testament'.
