Book Ecology and Natural History of Tropical Bees

Download or read book Ecology and Natural History of Tropical Bees written by David W. Roubik and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-05-29 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have been fascinated by bees for centuries. Bees display a wide spectrum of behaviours and ecological roles that have provided biologists with a vast amount of material for study. Among the types observed are both social and solitary bees, those that either pollinate or destroy flowers, and those that display traits allowing them to survive underwater. Others fly mainly at night, and some build their nests either in the ground or in the tallest rain forest trees. This highly acclaimed book summarises and interprets research from around the world on tropical bee diversity and draws together major themes in ecology, natural history and evolution. The numerous photographs and line illustrations, and the large reference section, qualify this book as a field guide and reference for workers in tropical and temperate research. The fascinating ecology and natural history of these bees will also provide absorbing reading for other ecologists and naturalists. This book was first published in 1989.

Book Systematics and Phylogeny of Sparganothina and Related Taxa Lepidoptera Tortricidae Sparganothini

Download or read book Systematics and Phylogeny of Sparganothina and Related Taxa Lepidoptera Tortricidae Sparganothini written by Bernard Landry and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-08-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a hypothesis of evolutionary relationships within the Neotropical genus Sparganothina and between this genus and other lineages of Sparganothini (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Nineteen species are considered to belong to Sparganothina. Ten additional species are placed in "Sparganothina" and five in "Coelostathma" pending a better phylogenetic understanding of Coelostathma and related genera. Thirty species are described as new.

Book A Bibliography of Ant Systematics

Download or read book A Bibliography of Ant Systematics written by Philip S. Ward and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is a comprehensive compilation of the literature on ant systematics. Covering the period 1758 to 1995, it contains entries for approximately 8,000 publications on the taxonomy, evolution, and comparative biology of ants. Most of the literature citations have been carefully verified and precisely dated. An introductory chapter discusses the problems associated with dating a citation of taxonomic literature. A list of all serials cited (more than 1,300 titles) and their abbreviations accompanies the bibliography.

Book Biosystematic Studies of Conifer feeding Choristoneura Lepidoptera Tortricidae in the Western United States

Download or read book Biosystematic Studies of Conifer feeding Choristoneura Lepidoptera Tortricidae in the Western United States written by Jerry A. Powell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 00 Forest defoliators of the Spruce Budworm complex are the most extensively studied moths in the world, yet taxonomic relationships among western populations have been poorly understood. This work distinguishes species groups using a three-dimensional definition-reproductive isolation through intraspecific recognition (pheromone chemistry and correlated behavior), ecological separation (larval hosts), and morphometric analysis of adults--where traditional study of museum specimens failed. Book Evolution and Phylogeny of Bees

Download or read book Evolution and Phylogeny of Bees written by John D. Plant and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 161 of Zoologica reviews and analyses the evolution and phylogeny of bees. It is subdivided into two parts Part One: A Preamble to the Evolution and Phylogeny of Bees provides a complete and critical review of all previous attempts to reconstruct the phylogenetic tree of bees (Anthophila / Apiformes) based on morphological, bionomic and molecular approaches and pre- sented in chronological sequence up to and including recent publications. At the same time, the introductory part examines trends in the classification of bees and compares available hypotheses of bee evolution. Part One closes with a family-wise delineation of the fossil history of bees. Part Two: A Phylogenetic Study of Bees in Light of Morphological Evidence adds an experimental study to complement the bibliographical analysis provided in Part One. The phylogenetic relationships of the larger taxonomic units of bees are tested anew using an extensive dataset of selected morphological features. The study uses all common and current computer-aided techniques of cladistic analysis (parsimony, successive/implied weight, Bayesian and neighbor-joining), which are applied to representatives of all seven families, 22 subfamilies and 48 of 58 tribes of bees. The conclusions drawn from this are evaluated for the major groups (i.e., short-tongued and long-tongued bees), and separately for the families, subfamilies and tribes in each case. In a world currently dominated by molecular genetic approaches to phylogeny, this study clearly demonstrates that it is not anachronistic to engage in morphological efforts, because progress can be significantly advanced and the pool of available scientific arguments enriched. The diversity of the object of investigation justifies a variety of methods. This monograph is a much needed reference work of high practical value for all students of bee evolution, phylogeny and morphology. Further, it is ideally suited as good introductory reading material for university level students.
