Book Bees and Honey Or First Lessons in Bee Keeping

Download or read book Bees and Honey Or First Lessons in Bee Keeping written by Thomas Newman and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exact reproduction from an original copy of BEES AND HONEY, OR FIRST LESSONS IN BEE-KEEPING by Thomas Newman originally published in 1911. This book is a short treatise for beginners originally written and published by Thomas Newman, then editor of the American Bee Journal, -the oldest bee-publication in America. Mr. Newman died in 1903. In this 1911 edition, C. P. DADANT updates the book with the newly discovered beekeeping skills which he had mastered. The Dadant family, originally from France, is one the first families of beekeeping in America. Charles Dadant (1817-1902) is considered one of the founding fathers of modern beekeeping. He was always seeking a better way to keep bees. Just as he had begun with the old European "eke", he quickly abandoned that kind of beekeeping for the modern Langstroth hive concept. It may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. We believe this work is culturally important, and despite the imperfections, have elected to bring it back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide. We appreciate your understanding of the imperfections in the preservation process, and hope you enjoy this valuable book.

"Sports" and "variations" occur, producing inferior progeny; but all careful breeders who have an eye to the improvement of the race reject those that do not come up to the "standard of excellence," sending such animals and poultry to the shambles--so let us carefully select the best queens and drones to breed from. Length of Tongues The length of the tongue (Fig. 13) of the honey-bee is an important matter in her make-up, as there are some blossoms, such as red clover, which have so long a corolla that the average bee cannot reach their nectar. The Cyprian bee is said to have a longer tongue than other races, but its cross disposition renders it unfit for general domestication. The Italians have often furnished strains that harvested nectar from red clover during the second crop of that plant, and in very dry seasons, from the first crop. They have longer tongues and gather honey from flowers where black bees cannot. 2. They are more industrious and persevering, and with the same opportunity gather much more than black bees. 3. They work earlier and later in the day as well as in the season, often gathering stores when the blacks are idle. 4. They are better to guard their hives against robbers (84), and against the ravages of the bee-moth's larvfe (214). 5. They are more prolific in the spring. 6. Their bees and queen adhere more tenaciously to the comb. 7. They are amiable, and it is easy to manipulate them.
