Krause was born in Maryland in 1971 and beautifully takes you through her young childhood and into her teenage years of avoiding school and partying until the wee hours of the morning. As an adult she met Ricky and even though she had serious reservations about their relationship she married him only to discover that he was prey to extramarital affairs and alcoholism. After years of remaining in the unhappy marriage, Laura somehow finds the courage to leave Ricky and to seek out her own emotional happiness that was quietly tucked away during the marriage for the needs of her children--but at the tragic price of losing them. As she describes her personal experience of her husband's anger and vengefulness she never gives up hope of being reunited with her children. Her faith in God and her strong will to survive helps her to endure emotional blows along the way and teaches her many valuable life lessons.

Download or read book Marina Girl written by Heather Joy Hampton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olivia Michaels knew she was embarking on an adventure when she moved to San Francisco, but she had no idea her address would label her a social pariah commonly referred to as a Marina girl. The Marina girl is a stereotype of a preppy, generic young woman who lives in the tiny neighborhood known as the Marina. You need to know about the history of the Marina to understand how and why the Marina girl developed into the albatross of San Francisco. After the 1906 earthquake, the city pushed all the ashes and rubble north down the steep hills of Pacific Heights, creating a landfill adjacent to a former pasture that later became the Cow Hollow neighborhood. Hundreds of Mediterranean-style homes were constructed in the 1920s on land that jiggled better than Bill Cosbys Jell-O when the 1989 earthquake hit. Most of the longtime residents moved away, leaving yuppie youngsters, perhaps less aware of their own mortality, to take over the neighborhood. Twenty years later, the Marina is the playground for San Franciscos worst nightmare, otherwise known as the Marina girl.

Book A Regular American Guy

Download or read book A Regular American Guy written by Bob Bell and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Regular American Guy is the story of one American guy. It begins with recounting his family's eight generations of American citizenship. Then his relatively normal childhood and transition into adulthood. He manages to get through high school and works his way through college. He was thrust into the Vietnam War in 1968. All he accomplished until then, and all he would achieve later, was put at risk. A battle where you are almost killed can be a profound experience. Reflecting on that traumatic event convinced him of two things. First, war is a terrible thing, and we need to find a way to stop it in the future. Second, thinking about that dramatic and frighting battle instilled in him a determination to make his life count regarding his fellow citizens and his family. So, he built an engineering and surveying firm from scratch employing hundreds of people. He served in elective offices and on community boards and commissions. He and Candace raised a family of five kids, who were well cared for materially and emotionally, and all grew up to be happy and productive adults. He made his life count. That fight in Vietnam was not so much a major event in his life as it was a tipping point. It refocused his life plan. So marriage, the birth of children, business success, and public service were the major event, just like so many American men and women.

Book excerpt: College life can be complicated—challenging, rewarding, downright frustrating—and a lot of fun. Warren University freshman Cassandra “Cassie” Davis is more than up for all of it. Which leaves Cassie facing the dreaded F-word… Fraternity—specifically Delta Tau Chi, a frat house on the verge of being banned from the school. Accused of offensive, sexist behavior, they have one year to clean up their act. With one shot at a scholarship to the school of her dreams, Cassie pitches an unusual research project—to pledge Delta Tau Chi, take on the boys’ club and provide proof of their misogynistic behavior. It’s different, but it’s not against the rules, and she’s pretty sure she knows exactly what to expect once she gets there. Which means the DTC brothers will have to face the dreaded F-word… Feminist—the type of girl who thinks they’re nothing but tank-top-wearing “bros” and is determined to see them booted from the school. But Cassie soon realizes things aren’t as simple as they appeared. Some of the DTC brothers, including her fellow pledge, Jordan Louis, are much more than she ever expected to find in a frat house. With her academic future on the line, and her heart all tangled in a web of her own making, Cassie will ultimately have to define for herself what the F-word is all about. “Refreshingly honest and intelligently written.” —New York Times and USA TODAY bestseller Julie Cross “[This] sweet, subversive deconstruction of frats and feminism…will have readers sighing and snorting at Cassie’s adventure into fraternity life and finding her own truth.” —Christa Desir, award-winning author of Bleed Like Me and Other Broken Things

Book The Seven a Family Holocaust Story

Download or read book The Seven a Family Holocaust Story written by Ellen Friedman and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literary memoir of exile and survival in Soviet prison camps during the Holocaust. Most Polish Jews who survived the Second World War did not go to concentration camps, but were banished by Stalin to the remote prison settlements and Gulags of the Soviet Union. Less than ten percent of Polish Jews came out of the war alive—the largest population of Jews who endured—for whom Soviet exile was the main chance for survival. Ellen G. Friedman’s The Seven, A Family Holocaust Story is an account of this displacement. Friedman always knew that she was born to Polish-Jewish parents on the run from Hitler, but her family did not describe themselves as Holocaust survivors since that label seemed only to apply only to those who came out of the concentration camps with numbers tattooed on their arms. The title of the book comes from the closeness that set seven individuals apart from the hundreds of thousands of other refugees in the Gulags of the USSR. The Seven—a name given to them by their fellow refugees—were Polish Jews from Warsaw, most of them related. The Seven, A Family Holocaust Storybrings together the very different perspectives of the survivors and others who came to be linked to them, providing a glimpse into the repercussions of the Holocaust in one extended family who survived because they were loyal to one another, lucky, and endlessly enterprising. Interwoven into the survivors’ accounts of their experiences before, during, and after the war are their own and the author’s reflections on the themes of exile, memory, love, and resentment. Based on primary interviews and told in a blending of past and present experiences, Friedman gives a new voice to Holocaust memory—one that is sure to resonate with today’s exiles and refugees. Those with an interest in World War II memoir and genocide studies will welcome this unique perspective.

Book excerpt: I stood up and looked in the window again, but the rooms were still empty—empty of furniture, empty of life, empty of love, empty of everything I was looking for and couldn't find. The summer of 1971 held promise. Ginny was looking forward to spending time with her friends, landing her first boyfriend, and practicing with new makeup. But the reality of her family turns a summer vacation into a spiraling tunnel of endless misery. Between a drunk father, a distracted mother, and a brother whose footsteps ignite fear worse than the devil, Ginny must reason her way out of childhood and find safe ground in the chilling first steps toward adulthood. Her only safe haven is the woods behind her house where she spends endless hours alone, hiding from the destruction within her house. But when she is followed into the woods by territorial teenage boys, her safe haven is torn from her faltering grip—a memory she won't easily put aside. A Cathedral of Cedars is the compelling story of a young teen fighting for her childhood while losing herself to a dysfunctional family too intent on maintaining some façade of normalcy to provide the love and nurturing care that a young girl needs. Virginia Johnston-Dodds leaves readers desperate to love Ginny and determined to make right the wrongs of their own family sorrows inA Cathedral of Cedars.'Virginia Dodds has done an extraordinary job at reminiscing about the summer that changed her life...an engaging and unforgettable story that I could not put down. • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780271008783
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Backstreets written by Cecilie Høigård and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Backstreets is about prostitution. It allows the individuals who participate in it&—prostitutes, pimps, and those who buy sexual services&—to tell their own stories in their own words. Women, for example, explain why they become prostitutes and how they experience the daily sequence of &"tricks.&" Men discuss why they become customers of prostitutes and what they get out of the experience. Pimps describe how they see themselves and the prostitutes upon whom they depend. The authors have studied the prostitution market of Oslo for over ten years. Their research has involved extensive interviews with participants, observation of Oslo's prostitution district, personal interaction with prostitute women, and analysis of city police records. They conclude that prostitution is embedded in the gender relations of an economically stratified society and that those who experience prostitution over an extended period of time suffer deep emotional damage.
