Book excerpt: It’s finally here—the comprehensive, authoritative book that does for beer what The Wine Bible does for wine. Written by an expert from the West Coast, where America’s craft beer movement got its start, The Beer Bible is the ultimate reader- and drinker-friendly guide to all the world’s beers. No other book of this depth and scope approaches the subject of beer?in the same way that beer lovers do—by style, just as a perfect pub menu is organized—and gets right to the pleasure of discovery, knowledge, and connoisseurship. Divided into four major families—ales, lagers, wheat beers, and tart and wild ales—there’s everything a beer drinker wants to know about the hundreds of different authentic types of brews, from bitters, bocks, and IPAs to weisses, milk stouts, lambics, and more. Each style is a chapter unto itself, delving into origins, ingredients, description and characteristics, substyles, and tasting notes, and ending with a recommended list of the beers to know in each category. Hip infographics throughout make the explanation of beer’s flavors, brewing methods, ingredients, labeling, serving, and more as immediate as it is lively. The book is written for passionate beginners, who will love its “if you like X, try Y” feature; for intermediate beer lovers eager to go deeper; and for true geeks, who will find new information on every page. History, romance, the art of tasting, backstories and anecdotes, appropriate glassware, bitterness units, mouthfeel, and more—it’s all here. Plus a primer on pairing beer and food using the three Cs— complement, contrast, or cut. It’s the book that every beer lover will read with pleasure, and use with even more.

A focus on the evolving fields of data science and neuroscience is a driving force for both researchers and the people they study. These digital and mobile technologies have enabled researchers to augment listening, observing and categorizing methods, and to adapt new techniques in attempting to better understand consumers. On the other hand, digitized mobile societies, spurred by faster and cheaper internet access, emphasize an interconnectedness that drastically alters human behaviors and creates borderless influences. Even so, the tenets and approaches to insightful deep learning for consumers and other actors, from discovery through to the launch of successful products, remains an intrinsic part of assessing the market. Product Innovation Toolbox brings together key thought leaders and seasoned consumer researchers from corporate R&D, academia, and marketing research companies to share their experiences, advanced consumer research tools and practical tips for successful and sustainable product innovation. By offering these leading-edge tools and insights, the book ensures consumer-centric innovation by linking strategy and a designed approach. The new edition focuses on the integration and connection of all data—both structured and unstructured???for deep learning and activation, rather than a differentiated qualitative—quantitative approach, reflecting the shifting relationships involved in the latest developments in the field. Book Thoughtful Machine Learning

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to apply test-driven development (TDD) to machine-learning algorithms—and catch mistakes that could sink your analysis. In this practical guide, author Matthew Kirk takes you through the principles of TDD and machine learning, and shows you how to apply TDD to several machine-learning algorithms, including Naive Bayesian classifiers and Neural Networks. Machine-learning algorithms often have tests baked in, but they can’t account for human errors in coding. Rather than blindly rely on machine-learning results as many researchers have, you can mitigate the risk of errors with TDD and write clean, stable machine-learning code. If you’re familiar with Ruby 2.1, you’re ready to start. Apply TDD to write and run tests before you start coding Learn the best uses and tradeoffs of eight machine learning algorithms Use real-world examples to test each algorithm through engaging, hands-on exercises Understand the similarities between TDD and the scientific method for validating solutions Be aware of the risks of machine learning, such as underfitting and overfitting data Explore techniques for improving your machine-learning models or data extraction

Book Reducing Alcohol Harm

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9780102954333
  • Pages : 60 pages

Download or read book Reducing Alcohol Harm written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This NAO report (HC 1049, session 2007-08, ISBN 9780102954333), examines the health service provision in England in respect of dealing with alcohol misuse. It is estimated that more than 10 million people are now regularly drinking above the guidelines set by Government, with the consequent ill health and injury. Between 1995-2007, hospital admissions for the three main alcohol-specific conditions (alcohol-related liver disease, mental health disorders linked to alcohol and acute intoxication) more than doubled, from 93,459 to 207,788. In 2006, there were 8,758 deaths from alcohol-related causes, twice as many as there were 15 years earlier. The Department of Health has estimated that alcohol misuse costs the health service £2.7 billion per year, along with the social costs, such as crime and disorder, social and family breakdown as well as sickness absence. The Cabinet Office has put the total cost of alcohol misuse in the UK economy of up to £25.1 billion. The NAO has set out a number of main findings and recommendations, including: that a quarter of Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) had not accurately assessed the alcohol problems in their area; that many PCTs do not have a strategy for alcohol harm or a clear picture of spending on such services; that local provision for specialist services is not based on a good understanding of a communities' needs, with wide variations between localities; that few PCTs collect detailed data on local patterns of alcohol misuse; that money spent on identification and brief advice can be cost effective, helping to re-empt the need for more expensive services; that PCTs need to coordinate more effectively with other public bodies, such as the police, prisons and probation staff, as well as social services to identify and help people who are misusing alcohol; that at present no systematic means of promoting good evidence-based practice on alcohol harm across PCTs exists.
