Book You Have the Right to Remain Innocent

Download or read book You Have the Right to Remain Innocent written by James J. Duane and published by Little a. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent, compact manifesto that will teach you how to protect your rights, your freedom, and your future when talking to police. Law professor James J. Duane became a viral sensation thanks to a 2008 lecture outlining the reasons why you should never agree to answer questions from the police--especially if you are innocent and wish to stay out of trouble with the law. In this timely, relevant, and pragmatic new book, he expands on that presentation, offering a vigorous defense of every citizen's constitutionally protected right to avoid self-incrimination. Getting a lawyer is not only the best policy, Professor Duane argues, it's also the advice law-enforcement professionals give their own kids. Using actual case histories of innocent men and women exonerated after decades in prison because of information they voluntarily gave to police, Professor Duane demonstrates the critical importance of a constitutional right not well or widely understood by the average American. Reflecting the most recent attitudes of the Supreme Court, Professor Duane argues that it is now even easier for police to use your own words against you. This lively and informative guide explains what everyone needs to know to protect themselves and those they love.

Book Therapeutic Action

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Lear
  • Publisher : Other Press, LLC
  • Release : 2003

  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Therapeutic Action written by Jonathan Lear and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2003 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that, properly understood, irony plays a crucial role in therapeutic action. However, this insight has been difficult to grasp because the concept of irony itself has been distorted, covered over. It is regularly confused with sarcasm; it is often mistakenly assumed that if one is speaking ironically, one must mean the opposite of what one says, that one must be feigning ignorance, that irony and earnestness cannot go together. All of these assumptions are false. So part of the therapeutic action of this book is conceptual therapy: we need to recover a vibrant sense of irony. This book, then, is not merely about the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis; it is an enactment of conceptual therapy. It is thus written as an invitation to clinicians--psychologists, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists--to renew their own engagement with the fundamental concepts of their practice.

This user-friendly reference provides words/phrases and meanings/synonyms by using an example sentence. Says the author, “For seven years I housed international students who were attending English language schools in Sydney, and I realised that although they had a good grasp of formal grammar, they struggled to understand not only colloquial English, but many of the commonly used phrasal verbs, which could not be found in a standard English/Spanish, French, etc., dictionary. It was then that I decided to start writing some of them down for future reference and it grew from there.”

This compelling and often startling book answers this, and many other questions about the oft-times violent world inhabited by our nation's police officers. Written by a cop-turned university professor who interviewed scores of officers who have shot people in the course of their duties, Into the Kill Zone presents firsthand accounts of the role that deadly force plays in American police work. This brilliantly written book tells how novice officers are trained to think about and use the power they have over life and death, explains how cops live with the awesome responsibility that comes from the barrels of their guns, reports how officers often hold their fire when they clearly could have shot, presents hair-raising accounts of what it's like to be involved in shoot-outs, and details how shooting someone affects officers who pull the trigger. From academy training to post-shooting reactions, this book tells the compelling story of the role that extreme violence plays in the lives of America's cops.

Especially since, according to Maggie, Natalie has always been a terrible judge of men! But when Natalie meets 59-year-old Richard, she believes she has found the one: a softy spoken, gentle giant who wines and dines her, takes her on a Caribbean cruise, and enjoys time on the beautiful South African south coast with her. But is Richard too good to be true? And will Maggie be proven right?
