Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping in Wisconsin Beekeeping returns the largest profit the amount of money and labor invested, of any agricultural pursuit Sometimes the return is as high as five dollars an hour for the time spent with the bees. A thorough knowledge of bees and honey production, however, is necessary before the most profitable results are possible. Fruits and berries, besides many grasses and flowers, depend on the busy bee to distribute the pollen. A few bees kept near an orchard will not only prove profitable as producers of honey, but will also increase the profits of the orchard. Soil and climate influence beekeeping. The length of the growing season often has an important bearing upon the number of kinds of plants producing nectar. On certain types of soil the best nectar producing plants do not thrive. A constant supply of nectar from the honey plants is needed by the bees. If during a part of the summer season the bees cannot collect nectar, the profits are certain to be lowered. The Italian bees are to be preferred as honey makers. Carnolian, Caucassian, and the common black German bees are other races which are not as desirable. Of the two varieties of Italian bees, the leather colored are generally preferred to the five banded or Golden Italians. To winter bees successfully is one of the essentials in beekeeping. Four essentials, sufficient and proper food supply, young fertile queens, plenty of young workers, and ample protection must be supplied. The amount of winter loss depends upon the amount of care taken by the beekeeper. A bee cellar, which is dry, dark, warm, and well ventilated will help keep the bees through the winter without loss, providing the colonies are properly prepared for wintering. There are several bee diseases known in Wisconsin. Paralysis, and sacbrood or pickled brood cause but slight damage. The American and European foul brood are the diseases which are of consequence. Proper care and management will greatly reduce the losses from disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Beekeeping for West Virginia Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping for West Virginia The keeping of bees dates back in history as one of the first occupa tions of man. Rude carvings of the bee upon the tombs of the ancient Egyptians; the presence of honey among the trinkets of the mummied inhabitants as well as honey being mentioned in the Bible as a sus tainer of life, indicates that the honey bee was held in high esteem by the people of that time. Honey was regarded a necessity as a food requirement for many centuries and remained as such within two or three generations of the present time. Bees were included among other live stock introduced in New England in 1638 during the colonization period of that section of America. During the Pioneer period of this state beekeeping was an important factor in every settlement. Honey and maple sugar in limited quantities were the only sources of sweets, depending largely upon the abundance of maple trees in the section settled. With the removal of the forest for agri cultural purposes, maple trees were not spared so in some sections it became necessary to depend entirely upon the bees to supply the required sugar which is a necessity in all food require ments of the human body. Owing to the crude conditions under which bees were kept, swarming was intense and many swarms escaped to the forest. As years passed the wild colonies multiplied and with the addition of more swarms every year from the colonists apiaries the bees penetrated further and further in the new pastures. The movement of bees into new territory was at a greater rate than that of man which is clearly pointed out by the pioneers of this state finding bees present in the forests. Early beekeeping was very simple, new swarms issuing during the swarming season were placed in hollow logs and were forgotten until fall when the bees in those gums hav ing the greatest amount of honey were killed. The returns were of rather poor quality, usually being more or less of a mixture of honey, pollen or bee-bread, dead bees, and brood. Nevertheless it was relished by all, for sugar which is now common, was unknown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping: A Discussion of the Life of the Honeybee and of the Production of Honey The present book is the result of an effort to present a logical discussion of the various phases of the complex subject of beekeeping. It was not planned as a book of rules to which one may go for directions for each day's work, for beekeeping cannot be treated correctly in such a way. The activities of bees vary during the seasons and no two localities present to the bees and their owners exactly the same environmental conditions, so that the successful beekeeper is one who has a knowledge of the activities of bees, whereby he can interpret what he sees in the hives from day to day, and who can mold the instincts of the bees to his convenience and profit It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foundation on which the practice of beekeeping rests. The beekeeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investigations have thrown light on these processes. In the preparation of the chapters devoted to the management of the apiary, an effort has been made to present the various systems of manipulations in such a way that the underlying principles shall be evident, rather than to attempt to describe each system as if it were separate. Book The Pennsylvania Beekeeper Vol 12

Download or read book The Pennsylvania Beekeeper Vol 12 written by Pennsylvania Beekeepers' Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Beekeeper, Vol. 12: April 1937 I have just spoken of two classes of beekeepers who are breeding queens, the commercial and the non-commercial, or the one who rears queens to sell and the one who rears queens largely for their use. This latter class far outnumbers the former, for most beekeepers have at some time or other tried their hand at rearing queens. Perhaps he had an unusually good queen from which he wished to get stock to head his other colonies, or not always being able to get queens when wanted, he decided to rear his own. Sometimes a large honey producer as Mr. Beaver runs a small queen rearing outfit. Or a beekeeper decides that since queens cost money, it won't cost him anything much but his time to rear his own. The ideal man to rear queens is one with plenty of information on and knowledge of the subject and money enough to be able to complete the job, insofar as he is able to go. Our experiment stations help us along this line. Government experts, bee specialists, bee journals all are of great help and for the most part the costs are small for all this help so that it is within the reach of all. Last, but not least, those beekeepers who make queen rearing a hobby supply an amazing amount of information and may their tribe increase. Book The Bee Keeper s Guide

Download or read book The Bee Keeper s Guide written by Albert John Cook and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bee-Keeper's Guide: Or Manual of the Apiary In 1876, in response to a desire frequently expressed by my apiarian friends, principally my students, I published an edition of 3000 copies of the little, unpretending "Manual of the Apiary." This was little more than the course of lectures which I gave annually at the Michigan Agricultural College. In less than two years this was exhausted, and the second edition, enlarged, revised, and much more fully illustrated, was issued. So great was the sale that in less than a year this was followed by the third and fourth editions, and, in less than two years, the fifth edition (seventh thousand) was issued. In each of the two following years, another edition was demanded. In each of these editions the book has been enlarged, changes made, and illustrations added, that the book might keep pace with our rapidly advancing art. So great has been the demand for this work, not only at home and in Europe, but even in more distant lands, and so great has been the progress of spiculture - so changed the views and methods of our best beekeepers - that the author feels warranted in thoroughly revising and entirely recasting this eighth edition (tenth thousand). Not only is the work re-written, but much new matter, and many new and costly illustrations, are added. The above I quote directly from the preface of the eighth edition, published in 1883. Since then four editions have appeared, each revised as the progress of the art required. In electrotyping the eighth edition, through an accident very poor work was done, so that the impressions of the last three editions have been far from satisfactory. This has led me wholly to revise the present, or thirteenth edition. In doing this I have thought it wise to add largely, especially to the scientific portion, as the intelligence of our bee-keepers demands the fullest information. I have thus added one hundred and fifty pages and more than thirty illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Beekeeping in the South

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping in the South: A Handbook on Seasons, Methods and Honey Flora of the Fifteen Southern States An impression gained is that beekeeping operations differ but little in the South from those in vogue elsewhere, except mainly in the time of their application. We have little criticism of methods in vogue in the South, except the lack of winter protection of any sort in too much of this region. Box hives are too prevalent in many areas of the South, but so they are in the North. An impression of southern beekeepers is their eagerness to learn modern methods, where they happen to be unknown, and to put them into practice. A little delay at such times may spell, failure. Poor seasons intervene when colonies will have to be fed to take them through the winter and it may need a good deal Of enthusiasm on the part of the beekeeper to keep up his Courage. Book Advanced Bee Culture Its Methods and Management Classic Reprint

Download or read book Advanced Bee Culture Its Methods and Management Classic Reprint written by William Z. Hutchinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Bee-Culture, Its Methods and Management In reply to the query, "What will best mix with bee-keeping?" I have always replied: "Some more bees." When the conditions arc favorable, I am decidedly in favor of bee-keeping: as a specialty - of dropping: all other hampering: pursuits, and turning: the whole capital, time and energies into bee-keeping. If beekeeping-cannot be made profitable as a specialty, then it is unprofitable as a subsidary pursuit. If bee-keeping must be propped up with some other pursuit, then we better throw away bee-keeping, and keep the prop. General farming is very poorly adapted for combining with beekeeping, yet the attempt is probably made oftener than with any other pursuit. There are critical times in bee-keeping that will brook no delay, when three or four days or a week's neglect may mean the loss of a crop; and these times come right in the height of the season, when the farmer is the busiest. Leaving the team and reaper standing idle in the back field while the farmer goes to the house to hive bees, is neither pleasant nor profitable. Drawing in a field of hay, while the bees lie idle because the honey has not been extracted to give them store-room, is another illustration of the conditions with which the farmer-bee-keeper has to contend. The serious part of it is that the honey thus lost may be worth nearly or quite as much as the hay that is saved. Some special lines of rural pursuits, like winter-dairying or the raising of grapes, or winter-apples, unite with bee-keeping to much better advantage than general farming; but when bee-keeping is capable of absorbing all of the capital, time and energy that a man can put into it, why divide these resources with some other pursuit? It has been said that bee-keeping is a precarious pursuit, that it cannot be depended upon, alone, to furnish a livelihood; and, for this reason, it should be joined with some business of a more stable character. Download or read book Some of the Essentials of Beekeeping written by Burton N. Gates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some of the Essentials of Beekeeping: From the Fifty-Ninth Annual Report of the State Board of Agriculture In commercial honey production, the selection of the apiary site receives deliberate consideration. Shelter from prevailing winds, a relatively level spot, upland and not swamp, remoteness from stock or pedestrians, aside from the general consideration of the honey producing flora or bee forage, are important. The matter of shade versus no shade in the apiary has attracted considerable attention, but without proving the advantage of one over the other. As a whole, bees thrive best in the open, but the hives should then be protected by shade boards or ventilated covers, in order to overcome the melting down of the combs or sulking or hanging out of the colony in excessive heat. It is usually thought that in the Open bees y earlier and perhaps gather more nectar than when colonies are under trees. Too dense shade, which results in dampness, is to be avoided.
