Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colony Collapse Disorder, ubiquitous pesticide use, industrial agriculture, habitat reduction—these are just a few of the issues causing unprecedented trauma in honeybee populations worldwide. In this artfully illustrated book, Heather Swan embarks on a narrative voyage to discover solutions to—and understand the sources of—the plight of honeybees. Through a lyrical combination of creative nonfiction and visual imagery, Where Honeybees Thrive tells the stories of the beekeepers, farmers, artists, entomologists, ecologists, and other advocates working to stem the damage and reverse course for this critical pollinator. Using her own quest for understanding as a starting point, Swan highlights the innovative projects and strategies these groups employ. Her mosaic approach to engaging with the environment not only reveals the incredibly complex political ecology in which bees live—which includes human and nonhuman actors alike—but also suggests ways of comprehending and tackling a host of other conflicts between postindustrial society and the natural world. Each chapter closes with an illustrative full-color gallery of bee-related artwork. A luminous journey from the worlds of honey producers, urban farmers, and mead makers of the United States to those of beekeepers of Sichuan, China, and researchers in southern Africa, Where Honeybees Thrive traces the global web of efforts to secure a sustainable future for honeybees—and ourselves.

Book excerpt: A million pounds of honey. Produced by a billion bees! This memoir reconstructs the life of a young man from Pennsylvania as he drops into the bald prairie badlands of southern Saskatchewan. He buys a honey ranch and keeps the bees that make the honey. But he also spends winters in Florida swamps, nurse-maid to ten thousand dainty queen bees. From the dusty Canadian prairie to the thick palmetto swamps of the American south, the reader meets with simple folks who shape the protagonist's character - including a Cree rancher with three sons playing NHL hockey, a Hutterite preacher who yearns to roam the globe, a reclusive bee-eating homesteader, and a grey-headed widow who grows grapefruit, plays a nasty game of scrabble, and lives with four vicious dogs. Encompassing a ten-year period, this true story evolves from the earnest inexperience of the young man as he learns an art and builds a business. Carefully researched natural biology runs counterpoint to human social activities. Bee craft serves as the setting for expositions that contrast American and Canadian lifestyles, while exemplifying the harsh reality of a man working with and against the physical environment.

Book The Pennsylvania Beekeeper Vol 4

Download or read book The Pennsylvania Beekeeper Vol 4 written by Pennsylvania Beekeepers' Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Beekeeper, Vol. 4: April 1929 Apparently the disease has not worked its way into this valley from the outside in recent years. It has been here a long time. A system of management has been developed here that has a tendency to check the disease and at the same time to keep it alive. Those who use this system stick to a long hive with frames about a foot square. They firmly believe that all black combs are bad: that bees should not be allowed to try to raise brood the second year in the same comb. Every fall they take out the brood combs from the center of the hive along with any surplus honey and move the end frames to the center. The empty frames are replaced the next spring when the packing is removed from the ends of the hive. There is a tendency among these people to scald their hives or scrub them with hot salt water before hiving a new swarm. In the big valley are a number of centers of infection of such long stand ing that the owners seem to have no idea when the disease first appeared. Invariably they laid the trouble to spraying, insisting that before people sprayed one never heard of foulbrood. Such apiaries were for practical purposes abandoned. Overturned hives with exposed combs invited robbers and offered every possibility of infecting the entire neighborhood. Stray swarms hive themselves often enough to keep the infection alive. One infection center was located in a long narrow valley about half of which is covered with forest growth. A railroad and a highway run the length of this valley. The whole apiary of 13 colonies was infected and in addition a large pile of old combs was half hidden by weeds. He stated that he had foulbrood five years before but had cleaned it all up. About a mile west in an apiary of five was one light infection. Across the road was an apiary of 20 colonies and no infection. About. The same distance east was a good apiary the honey of which took prizes at the county fair the year before. The owner was not familiar. With foulbrood. Early last spring he found one of his colonies dead. He thought the simplest way to feed their honey to the other colonies was to let the bees help themselves. Accordingly he blocked up the hive second story lid. As a result about all his bees were dead when inspected in August. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees and Bee-Keeping: A Plain, Practical Work; Resulting From Tears of Experience and Close Observation in Extensive Aplaries, Both in Pennsylvania and California; With Directions How to Make Bee Keeping a Desirable and Lucrative Business, and for Shipping Bees to California The author of this treatise, having been taught from youth to work with Bees, ever admiring their great sagacity, industry and perseverance, and desiring to turn their industry to account as a matter of profit, directed all his efforts to acquire a correct knowledge of their habits, wants and requirements necessary to continued prosperity and profit. He observed, years ago, that when the seasons were favorable for producing abundance of honey, bees invariably flourished and increased rapidly, yielding large returns in the shape of surplus honey, bidding defiance to worms and all other enemies, being evidently prosperous and happy; but when scarcity prevailed, the very reverse of this condition of things was true; adversity took the place of prosperity - some would starve, others would fall a prey to their enemies.
