Book Constructive Beekeeping Classic Reprint

Download or read book Constructive Beekeeping Classic Reprint written by Ed H. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constructive Beekeeping Familiarity with the bees makes a person wonder where the mule got his reputation for stubborness. We must, when we work with bees, follow where they lead if we want satisfactory results. They generally know what they want and fight to do it in their own way. The bee is an economical fellow. Efficiency is his last name. For ages before our time he has been working at the same task that he has brought to such perfection. The bees that have excited the amazement and wonder of the world as build ers of geometric comb, with all its economy and strength, the bees that make from the nectar of the flowers the honey, that is the superlative of all things sweet and good; have not stopped with these two achievements, but have maintained a marvel with in their home, which, when understood, will amaze us more than ever. The bees collect propolis (despised by the beekeeper) and with infinite work and a knowledge of the laws of condensation of moisture, have varnished the inside, sealed all openings that would give upper ventilation, making out of their home a perfect condenser for the water vapor that has filled the hive air by evaporation from the nectar. This moisture they collect from the inside surface of the hive, works right in with their idea of econ omy, saving the carrying of water from the stream or spring. Book Dadant System of Beekeeping Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dadant System of Beekeeping Classic Reprint written by Camille Pierre Dadant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dadant System of Beekeeping The worker bees hatch from the egg in 21 days, in ordinary circumstances. They do duty about the inside for a week, before attempting a flight outside. About the seventh day, in the after noon, they take their first flight, coming back home after having made the acquaintance of the surroundings, and remaining another week indoors. It is therefore only after 2 weeks of insect life, 5 weeks from the laying of the egg, that the worker becomes a field bee and begins to harvest honey. This is im portant to know, if we wish to get our force of honey harvesters at the right time. The worker does not live long in the busy season. Previous to the introduction of the Italian bee in apiaries of common bees, it was difficult, if not impossible to ascertain how long a worker lives. The introduction of Italian bees has helped solve this problem in a positive manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Probably no other pursuit is calculated to bring one into intimate touch with nature at so many points as is beekeeping. To the gardener, the fruit-grower especially, bees are an absolute necessity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hive Bee: A Manual of Beekeeping for Hawaii The hive bee is a familiar example of an insect under domestication. The history of its domestication is lost in antiquity; for the art of bee culture has been known since the earliest times. In the wild state bees range the woods, nesting in hollow trees, in crevices in rocks or in any place that will afford them protection, often in the most inaccessible places. Searching for these nests in order to plunder their stores of honey constitutes a favorite pastime in the countryside. This method of procuring the bees products, however, is wasteful and uncertain. The bee has small place in human economy until its cultivation as a domestic animal insures a lively and continued interest. Under domestication the bee has received considerable attention. Its cultivation among the historical peoples dwelling on the shores of the Mediterranean has led to the recognition of well-marked races, from different characteristics of size, color, behavior, etc., and some improvement in quality of the different races has been made through the application of well known principles of breeding. As a domestic animal also it has been carried with the stream of human migration to practically all parts of the earth. The German or black race of bees was the one commonly propagated by the early beekeepers and received a wide distribution; but more recently the superiority of the Italian or golden race has become recognized and it is now largely replacing the German bee. The early spread of the black bee is deplored by many beekeepers on account of the trouble it gives when they attempt to maintain pure breeds of the golden races. The principal characteristics of the Italian bee are its high color, great energy and peculiar gentleness. Book Bee Keeping in North Carolina Vol 29

Download or read book Bee Keeping in North Carolina Vol 29 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in North Carolina, Vol. 29: January, 1908 There is no State organization in which our bee-keepers meet to exchange views; there is no system of inspection by which the apiaries may be brought to a higher standard; the bee-keeping magazines have but a limited circulation with us, and there is nowhere in the State a practical bee-keeper whose special duty it is to encourage or protect this industry. In order to see if we could reach any of the fundamental facts underlying this industry in the State, the writer - though not an actual beekeeper - began an inquiry into the industry in the summer of 1905, which has been continued (with interruptions) to the pres ent time. A carefully prepared sheet of questions was sent out, and all data received in reply have been carefully recorded. We have left out of account any who have less than ten colonies of bees, so that the data which we have is from actual commercial bee-keepers. We have on record replies from about 360 persons, representing a total of colonies, located in seventy-eight counties - an average of 134 colonies for each county heard from, or an average of nearly 108 colonies for each and every county in the entire State. We feel that with such an amount of data we are warranted in deducting some conclusions regarding the industry in the State as a whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping: A Discussion of the Life of the Honeybee and of the Production of Honey The present book is the result of an effort to present a logical discussion of the various phases of the complex subject of beekeeping. It was not planned as a book of rules to which one may go for directions for each day's work, for beekeeping cannot be treated correctly in such a way. The activities of bees vary during the seasons and no two localities present to the bees and their owners exactly the same environmental conditions, so that the successful beekeeper is one who has a knowledge of the activities of bees, whereby he can interpret what he sees in the hives from day to day, and who can mold the instincts of the bees to his convenience and profit It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foundation on which the practice of beekeeping rests. The beekeeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investigations have thrown light on these processes. In the preparation of the chapters devoted to the management of the apiary, an effort has been made to present the various systems of manipulations in such a way that the underlying principles shall be evident, rather than to attempt to describe each system as if it were separate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Honey Bee: A Manual of Instruction in Apiculture This treatise is designed to make the practical management Of an apiary plain to those whose acquaintance with the subject is limited, and to direct such as may find in it a pleasant and profitable occu patiou to a system Of management which may be followed on an exten sive scale with the certainty of fair remuneration for the labor and capital required. With this Object in view the author has deemed it best to treat the natural history Of the bee but briefly, and also to give little space to matters which are in question, or to different methods Of accomplishing given results, or to such-as are only adapted to a limited portion of the country, but rather to explain one settled way widely applicable and which will lead to success. The methods advised here are such as the author has found practical during an extended expe rience, yet in regard to numerous details many works - both foreign and American - have been consulted, none more freely than Langstroth on the Honey Bee, revised by Chas. Dadant Son, and Bees and Bee Keeping, by Prof. F. R. Cheshire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
