Book Constructive Beekeeping Classic Reprint

Download or read book Constructive Beekeeping Classic Reprint written by Ed H. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constructive Beekeeping Familiarity with the bees makes a person wonder where the mule got his reputation for stubborness. We must, when we work with bees, follow where they lead if we want satisfactory results. They generally know what they want and fight to do it in their own way. The bee is an economical fellow. Efficiency is his last name. For ages before our time he has been working at the same task that he has brought to such perfection. The bees that have excited the amazement and wonder of the world as build ers of geometric comb, with all its economy and strength, the bees that make from the nectar of the flowers the honey, that is the superlative of all things sweet and good; have not stopped with these two achievements, but have maintained a marvel with in their home, which, when understood, will amaze us more than ever. The bees collect propolis (despised by the beekeeper) and with infinite work and a knowledge of the laws of condensation of moisture, have varnished the inside, sealed all openings that would give upper ventilation, making out of their home a perfect condenser for the water vapor that has filled the hive air by evaporation from the nectar. This moisture they collect from the inside surface of the hive, works right in with their idea of econ omy, saving the carrying of water from the stream or spring. Download or read book Dadant System of Beekeeping Classic Reprint written by Camille Pierre Dadant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dadant System of Beekeeping The worker bees hatch from the egg in 21 days, in ordinary circumstances. They do duty about the inside for a week, before attempting a flight outside. About the seventh day, in the after noon, they take their first flight, coming back home after having made the acquaintance of the surroundings, and remaining another week indoors. It is therefore only after 2 weeks of insect life, 5 weeks from the laying of the egg, that the worker becomes a field bee and begins to harvest honey. This is im portant to know, if we wish to get our force of honey harvesters at the right time. The worker does not live long in the busy season. Previous to the introduction of the Italian bee in apiaries of common bees, it was difficult, if not impossible to ascertain how long a worker lives. The introduction of Italian bees has helped solve this problem in a positive manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Bee Keeping by Twentieth Century Methods Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping by Twentieth Century Methods In putting out this work the publishers assume no responsibility for the correctness of the methods herein described; but the author, Mr. Hand, is one of the best-informed bee-keepers in the United States. He has worked out a unique system, which, while not original in the basic principles employed, is original in manner of applying those principles. That the Hand system will revolutionize methods of swarm control, is somewhat a question; but we do believe it is worthy of careful and thorough trial on the part of the unprejudiced. The public will be quick to measure its value, and will unerringly decide whether it is better and cheaper to apply than other systems of management. That the Hand system has given good result? in the apiary of the inventor, can not be denied. The photos show his skyscraper hives filled with fancy and No.1 comb honey - hives that have cast no swarms, but have gone on storing honey in the supers uninterruptedly. Whether others will be able to do as well; whether they will find this system cheaper to apply than the ordinary methods of shaking swarms as described in our standard text-books, remains to be seen. Book Southern Bee Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Southern Bee Culture Classic Reprint written by J. J. Wilder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Bee Culture I had to brace it with two sticks to keep it from tumbling over. I made some crude movable-frame hives (for I had not yet seen a patent movable; frame hive). With this outfit I began bee - keeping anew, studying them by handling them on their combs. My bee business began to grow; and after keeping bees thus for several years I heard of a bee-keeper who had bought some patent factory made hives. I paid him a visit at once, and I saw that the hives were just what I needed, so I bought a lot of them Next season I transferred my bees into them. From the old crude hives I transfered bees and what I had on hand extra, furnished me fuel during the summer and following winter. From the old decayed box hive my bee business has spread until bee keeping is my business or sole occupation. Besides establishing five apiaries of my own around in this section (as many bees as I can give proper atten tion to), I have furnished foundation stock from which many apiaries have been established in various sections of the South from the old mother hives. The ups and downs I had during this time, I have not space to describe in this small volume. If there is such a thing as a man being called to do certain work, I have been called to the field of bee culture, for I feel out of my calling at any thing else. Although I have mastered no little at eight other occupations, yet I feel more as if I am at my allotted work when I am among my bees than I do at any other of my trades. I have applied myself to bee-keeping in almost every conceivable man ner, keeping colonies of bees in glass hives in my bedroom and on my ver anda, keeping close and constant watch on them by day and by night. I have operated bees successfully and extensively for extracted chunk and comb honey m sections; I have traveled to and fro across the South, investi gating bee-keeping and the honey-plants in many sections; and if I did not know that there is a great future for the bee and honey industry here I would not attempt to write this book. While methods' of apiary work and bee-keeping differ m sections and locations, I hope to give you at least some practical thoughts along bee-keeping in your own location. Book The Beginner in Bee Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Beginner in Bee Culture Classic Reprint written by W. A. Goodacre and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner in Bee Culture Since the introduction of the bar frame hive, many scientific as well as practical apiarists have made a close study of bee-keeping, contributing Opinions which it behoves us to consider carefully. It is not suggested that, to be successful, the apiarist should necessarily be a scientist, but it is intended rather to stress the advantage to be derived from associating with practical experience a sound knowledge of the main principles of apiculture. As in other activities, the start Is all-important. A start in the wrong direction leads to all scrts of troubles, and in no case is this better instanced than where the beginner purchases bees 1n any odd-sized hives, thus inaugurating an any old way system at the opposite pole to any which characterise profitable modern bee-keeping. Five well-hived colonies containing a fair breed of bees will with ordinary attention, equal thirty Of the kept any way sort, so far as production is concerned. Surely then it is easier to attend to five hives than thirty? It is quality, not number, that counts, and the beginner's first aim should be to keep bees the right way. A very comfortable living can be made from apiculture, providing the apiarist will properly qualify himself to become a producer. The three main things are experience, locality, and energy. Small apiaries can be profitably worked as a side line with other industries, providing time can be found for ordinary attention during the season. Book Bee Keeping in North Carolina Vol 29

Download or read book Bee Keeping in North Carolina Vol 29 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in North Carolina, Vol. 29: January, 1908 There is no State organization in which our bee-keepers meet to exchange views; there is no system of inspection by which the apiaries may be brought to a higher standard; the bee-keeping magazines have but a limited circulation with us, and there is nowhere in the State a practical bee-keeper whose special duty it is to encourage or protect this industry. In order to see if we could reach any of the fundamental facts underlying this industry in the State, the writer - though not an actual beekeeper - began an inquiry into the industry in the summer of 1905, which has been continued (with interruptions) to the pres ent time. A carefully prepared sheet of questions was sent out, and all data received in reply have been carefully recorded. We have left out of account any who have less than ten colonies of bees, so that the data which we have is from actual commercial bee-keepers. We have on record replies from about 360 persons, representing a total of colonies, located in seventy-eight counties - an average of 134 colonies for each county heard from, or an average of nearly 108 colonies for each and every county in the entire State. We feel that with such an amount of data we are warranted in deducting some conclusions regarding the industry in the State as a whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Bee-Keepers' d104 Book The successful cultivation of the honey bee, depends upon a correct knowledge of the laws by which the economy of the hive is regulated; comply with these laws and you reap a golden harvest - disregard them and disappointment and loss are the certain result. The following pages are designed to impart: 1st. A knowledge of these laws. 2d. Instruction how to comply with their requirements. 3d. Caution against their violation. To accomplish these ends we have endeavored: 1st. To bring the language within the comprehension of the man of limited education and means, to whom bee-keeping commends itself on account of its large pecuniary returns for the capital and attention required. 2d. To present, the practical part of the subject fully and yet briefly, believing, as we do, that condensation, to the greatest possible extent consistent with a full exposition of the subject, not only diminishes the cost but increases the value of a work of this kind. 3d. To convey the most valuable knowledge, we have drawn from every available source, not having been ambitious to write a work purely original. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bee-Keeping From the very earliest historic times, the Hive Bee has been cultivated by man for the sake Of the delicious honey and useful wax that it produces, as well as studied for the manifold lessons it furnishes in industry and physiology. The busy merchant, when wanting a symbol for his house, could find no better sign than the Bee-hive. How common the axiom, A very Hive Of industry. The poet and the moralist fails not to quote our little friend as an example to the young; and the beautiful hymn Of Dr. Watts, 'the Little Busy Bee, ' can never be forgotten as a memory of our early days, and in ages to come will be taught to our children's children with the same loving wish Of a good result as was hoped for us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian System of Bee Keeping Having been asked to edit the following notes during their original publication in the columns of the Field newspaper and their republication in the present form, I have had much pleasure in acceding to the request. The principle of the Giotto hive is not new, it being a slight modification of the leaf hive designed by Huber. Its merit lies in its simplicity and cheapness, and in the admirable manner in which it is capable of being worked with the inexpensive honey extractor or smielatore. With regard to the home manufacture of the hive, I would suggest that anyone, living within reach of a saw mill, would find it much more advantageous to obtain the pieces for each frame separately, as rods 3ft. O 1/2 in. long, 1 3/6 in. wide, and 1 in. thick, could be procured cut to the exact size, and at a much cheaper rate at a saw mill than they could be cut out of planks. It gives me much pleasure to be the means of introducing so practical and useful a system of bee management to the English public.
