Book Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Download or read book Charlotte Perkins Gilman written by Carol Farley Kessler and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1995-03-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of Carol Farley Kessler's work is how Charlotte Perkins Gilman developed as a writer and how she imagined a full-blown utopia for women. This book, which offers a fresh reading of Gilman's fiction, fills a void in Gilman scholarship, in feminist utopian scholarship, and in American literary studies. Kessler provides three journeys through Gilman's life: "A Biographical Exploration'' discusses facets of her life having a substantial impact upon her utopian writing. Four themes influence this development: the legacy of ancestral expectations; her relationships to father, mother, and daughter; the experience of two marriages and a divorce; and her friendships with women. Gilman and her "Prancing Young Utopia" presents three stages in the development of Gilman's utopian writing. First, she imagined neighborhoods-writing alternately fiction and nonfiction. Second, she tested in fiction the expression of utopian principles explained in her nonfiction. Finally, she created the whole society in her 1915 satire Herland. All of the foregoing writing represents Gilman's effort to imagine in fiction solutions that she recommended in her 1898 feminist treatise, Women and Economics. "Writing to Empower Living'' connects Gilman's biography to her utopian writing as both personal expression and public activism. The writing can be understood as "equipment for living." Ten hard-to-locate utopian short stories and chapters from four novels conclude the volume.

Book Collected Works

Download or read book Collected Works written by Walter Porter and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together, for the first time in a critical edition, the complete works of the English composer Walter Porter (ca. 1587/ca. 1595–1659). One of a small number of English composers from the first half of the seventeenth century who embraced “progressive” Italianate methods of composition, Porter is further worthy of mention in histories of music for two reasons: he was the composer of the last book of English madrigals, and he claimed to have been the pupil of Claudio Monteverdi. His works survive primarily in two printed collections: Madrigales and Ayres (1632) and Mottets of Two Voyces (1657). Six of the 1657 Mottets also appear in York Minster Library, MS M. 5/1–3(S). One strophic song and three catches may also be attributed to Walter Porter and are included in an appendix.

Book excerpt: How electricity became a metaphor for modernity in the United States, inspiring authors from Mark Twain to Ralph Ellison. At the turn of the twentieth century, electricity emerged as a metaphor for modernity. Writers from Mark Twain to Ralph Ellison grappled with the idea of electricity as both life force (illumination) and death spark (electrocution). The idea that electrification created exclusively modern experiences took hold of Americans' imaginations, whether they welcomed or feared its adoption. In Power Lines, Jennifer Lieberman examines the apparently incompatible notions of electricity that coexisted in the American imagination, tracing how electricity became a common (though multifarious) symbol for modern life. Lieberman examines a series of moments of technical change when electricity accrued new social meanings, plotting both power lines and the power of narrative lines in American life and literature. While discussing the social construction of electrical systems, she offers a new interpretation of Twain's use of electricity as an organizing metaphor in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, describes the rhetoric surrounding the invention of electric execution, analyzes Charlotte Perkins Gilman's call for human connection in her utopian writing and in her little-known Human Work, considers the theme of electrical interconnection in Jack London's work, and shows how Ralph Ellison and Louis Mumford continued the literary tradition of electrical metaphor. Electrical power was a distinctive concept in American literary, cultural, and technological histories. For this reason, narratives about electricity were particularly evocative. Bridging the realistic and the romantic, the historical and the fantastic, these stories guide us to ask new questions about our enduring fascination with electricity and all it came to represent.
