Book Bee Keeping by Twentieth Century Methods

Download or read book Bee Keeping by Twentieth Century Methods written by J. E. Hand and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mr. Hand is one of the best-informed bee-keepers in the United States. He has worked out a unique system, which, while not original in the basic principles employed, is original in manner of applying those principles. That the Hand system will revolutionize methods of swarm control, is somewhat a question; but we do believe it is worthy of careful and thorough trial on the part of the unprejudiced. The public will be quick to measure its value, and will unerringly decide whether it is better and cheaper to apply than other systems of management." -O. Medina "In view of the many excellent works covering the rudimentary principles of apiculture, it would seem that one should offer an apology for introducing another; and were it not for the fact that this work opens up an unexploited field of American apicultural methods and appliances it would not have been written. I assume that the reader possesses a fair knowledge, either theoretical or practical, of the first principles of bee-keeping. As its title implies, this work is a radical departure from the stereotyped style of former works upon subjects pertaining to bee-keeping. It seeks to lift bee-keepers out of the old ruts and place their feet on smooth ground by introducing principles that eliminate all unnecessary manipulation with bees. "It reduces the complex methods of honey-production to a very simple science with few manipulations, enabling the bee-keeper to care for twice as many colonies as formerly with a given amount of labor, and at the same time makes it possible for him to enjoy the blessing of perfect control of bees." - J. Book The Lives of Bees

Download or read book The Lives of Bees written by Thomas D. Seeley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeley, a world authority on honey bees, sheds light on why wild honey bees are still thriving while those living in managed colonies are in crisis. Drawing on the latest science as well as insights from his own pioneering fieldwork, he describes in extraordinary detail how honey bees live in nature and shows how this differs significantly from their lives under the management of beekeepers. Seeley presents an entirely new approach to beekeeping--Darwinian Beekeeping--which enables honey bees to use the toolkit of survival skills their species has acquired over the past thirty million years, and to evolve solutions to the new challenges they face today. He shows beekeepers how to use the principles of natural selection to guide their practices, and he offers a new vision of how beekeeping can better align with the natural habits of honey bees.

Download or read book A Year s Work in an Out Apiary written by G M Doolittle and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated account of beekeeping is rooted in the practical experience of G. M. Doolittle, whose techniques resulted in good yields of honey. Writing in the early 20th century, several of Doolittle's practical ideas hold some interest for the modern apiarist, in spite of how modern equipment has improved and evolved. Although the book is primarily aimed at the specialist who maintains many bee colonies as a line of work, the author explains that his observations can also serve as useful for the home-based hobbyist who aspires to raise only a single colony. Detailed drawings of the containers used and their handling are included, as are diagrams indicating how to manage the grasses and grounds around hives. We are shown how the bees are cared for, and several of Doolittle's methods for increasing the activity and yield. The techniques explained include supplying a colony with a queen through the use of a tubal cage, and protecting the valuable queens from harm during transport with carefully-built housing. We are also given advice on dealing with pests such as mice, and keeping bees happy and productive through changes in weather. Overall, Doolittle's experiences as a beekeeper are plainly written and brimming with wisdom.

Book The Tears of Re

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gene Kritsky
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-10-08
  • ISBN : 0199361401
  • Pages : 159 pages

Download or read book The Tears of Re written by Gene Kritsky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Egyptian mythology, when the ancient Egyptian sun god Re cried, his tears turned into honey bees upon touching the ground. For this reason, the honey bee was sacrosanct in ancient Egyptian culture. From the art depicting bees on temple walls to the usage of beeswax as a healing ointment, the honey bee was a pervasive cultural motif in ancient Egypt because of its connection to the sun god Re. Gene Kritsky delivers a concise introduction of the relationship between the honey bee and ancient Egyptian culture, through the lenses of linguistics, archeology, religion, health, and economics. Kritsky delves into ancient Egypt's multifaceted society, and traces the importance of the honey bee in everything from death rituals to trade. In doing so, Kritsky brings new evidence to light of how advanced and fascinating the ancient Egyptians were. This richly illustrated work appeals to a broad range of interests. For archeology lovers, Kritsky delves into the archeological evidence of Egyptian beekeeping and discusses newly discovered tombs, as well as evidence of manmade hives. Linguists will be fascinated by Kritsky's discussion of the first documented written evidence of the honeybee hieroglyph. And anyone interested in ancient Egypt or ancient cultures in general will be intrigued by Kritsky's treatment of the first documented beekeepers. This book provides a unique social commentary of a community so far removed from modern humans chronologically speaking, and yet so fascinating because of the stunning advances their society made. Beekeeping is the latest evidence of how ahead of their times the Egyptians were, and the ensuing narrative is as captivating as every other aspect of ancient Egyptian culture.
